LA for foodies:
A suggested one-day itinerary
Get ready, foodies: it’s going to be an early start. Undoubtedly the hippest breakfast spot in LA – maybe in the entire country – is Sqirl in Silver Lake. It’s best to arrive before 9 am if you don’t want to spend your morning queuing (and there’s plenty of must-eats in LA, so we’d advise against it). Once you’re in the door, order one of the popular grain bowls and brioche toast, with an almond milk latte on the side. Afterwards, go for a stroll around Silver Lake’s shops and galleries to burn off some of your breakfast before seeking out a late-morning food truck snack. Chef Roy Choi’s Kogi, which mashes up Korean flavours with Mexican dishes, is one of the best known, though LA’s food trucks serve up everything from ice cream sandwiches to fish tacos.
Koreatown has been rated one of the hippest gastronomic neighbourhoods in the US, which makes it perfect for a lunchtime food crawl. Korean food is unsurprisingly one of the local staples, and you can get your bibimbap fix at restaurants like Soban. But beyond the bulgogi, you should also seek out New American eats at restaurants like Commissary, tucked away in a photogenic greenhouse at The Line Hotel. But the afternoon doesn’t end there. Given that LA is surrounded by some of the world’s top wine producing regions, a pre-dinner tipple is essential. Pay a visit to the historic San Antonio Winery to try some exquisite SoCal vintages.
Now’s the time to book an indulgent meal out – and in Los Angeles, you have no shortage of choice when it comes to top-notch restaurants. Gjelina in Venice Beach is one of the city’s hotspots, thanks to its creative New American cuisine.
Or you can enjoy an exquisite kaiseki dinner at N/Naka. Helmed by chef Niki Nakayama, N/Naka won instant fame after being featured on Chef’s Table. Now, it’s one of LA’s most coveted tables. Either way, be sure to end the day with a cocktail or several at The Varnish: a hidden speakeasy that was named Best American Cocktail Bar at Tales of the Cocktail.
