Our top picks this month

The Ben Miller Band - Choke Cherry Tree
Hailing from the Deep South of the US, The Ben Miller Band make a sound that on one hand defies easy categorisation – country, blues and hip hop are all here in a glorious musical mishmash – but on the other hand could only be from the South.

Black Stone Cherry - Family Tree
Kentucky rockers Black Stone Cherry met at school, played shows and grew their fanbase until labels came calling. This, their sixth album, is chock-full of the teeth-rattling bass, huge drums and heads-down riffage on which they made their name.

Brad Mehldau - After Bach
German composer Bach casts a long shadow over Brad Mehldau – which is why it comes as no surprise to find the US pianist recording an entire album inspired by him. As with everything Mehldau touches, it has a distinctive leftfield jazz feel.

Brian Fallon - Sleepwalkers
The second solo album by the frontman of rock band The Gaslight Anthem, Sleepwalkers has been warmly received by critics who note that it sees the indie sensibilities of Fallon’s ‘other’ outfit given a neat twist.

Caroline Rose - Loner
Rose has ditched the roots-rock of her debut I Will Not Be Afraid, in favour of a punchier, studio-powered pop sound. Dancey beats, prominent synths and big choruses are now the order of the day, though her bold and witty approach to serious subject matter remains unchanged.

Ebenezer - Bad Romantic
UK rapper Ebenezer is happy to admit to being a romantic – just not a very good one. On this new EP – an appetiser for a forthcoming album, we hope – he explores what he calls ‘the battle between the good side of love and the bad side of it’.

Fischerspooner - Sir
Electroclash pioneers Fischerspooner take their moniker from a combination of the duo’s surnames (i.e. Warren Fischer and Casey Spooner). This fourth album – nine years in the making – was executive-produced and co-written by Michael Stipe of R.E.M, as well as Boots (no, not the chemist).

George Ezra - Staying at Tamara's
Ezra takes an ‘if ain’t broke, don’t fix it’ approach to this follow-up to his huge-selling debut, Wanted on Voyage. Thus, we get more songs about ‘escapism, dreaming, anxieties and love’ delivered in that distinctive, emotionally weathered voice.

I'm With Her - See You Around
Each of the women in this folk supergroup (Sara Watkins, Sarah Jarosz, and Aoife O’Donovan) were accomplished artists in their own right before deciding to get together. See You Around represents the first fruit of their collective labour and, as you might imagine, it’s very special indeed.

Jeremy Messersmith - Late Stage Capitalism
This new set from highly regarded indie singer Messersmith has a sound inspired by 1960’s sunshine pop – even when the lyrics are discussing modern subjects such as the socioeconomic climate and the current state of humanity. It’s a neat trick, and Messersmith pulls it off with aplomb.

Joshua Hyslop - Echos
Vancouver-based songsmith Hyslop has won a legion of fans for his gently strummed songs, with previous albums In Deepest Blue and his 2012 debut Where the Mountain Meets the Valley notching up 65 million Vancouver-based songsmith Hyslop has won a legion of fans for his gently strummed songs, with previous albums In Deepest Blue and his 2012 debut Where the Mountain Meets the Valley notching up 65 million streams. And there’s a good reason he’s so popular – he’s ace.

Lo Moon - Lo Moon
Lo Moon’s 2016 single Loveless was an amazing debut, but they kept fans waiting for this accompanying album. At last, though, here it is, and it’s a cracking first effort: poppy, lush and shoegazey. Truly, this is music to lose yourself in.

Max Richter - The Blue Notebooks
Enormously influential, composer Max Richter’s compositions are a mix of modern classical and ambient. This, his second album from 2004, is one that helped forge his formidable reputation, and includes moving spoken word performed by Tilda Swinton. It’s an incredible work.

Rhye - Blood
Something of a best-kept secret, Rhye are a band with the power to enchant all who hear their blend of stripped-down, mellow arrangements and singer Mike Milosh’s incredible falsetto. With any luck this second album will bring them the success they so sorely deserve.

Youngr - This Is Not An Album
Despite what Mr Youngr says, this is indeed ‘an album’. And a very good one it is, too, thanks to a keen musical ear and an innate ability to blend musical genres at will. Mind you, it’s obviously in his genes – Youngr’s dad is none other than Kid Creole.

Remember, this is just a tiny selection of the full albums available. Once on board, you'll find a huge library of music from all genres, on demand.
