Extra baggage or overweight bags

What to do if you want to take additional baggage on your trip.

This page tells you everything you need to know about taking additional baggage to your baggage allowance, including how many extra bags you can take, and what to do if your bags are overweight.

Alternatively, find out what to do if your bags are oversized.

Important things to remember if you're planning to check in additional or overweight baggage:

  • Charges for additional luggage have to be paid for both the outbound and the return journey.
  • If a bag is overweight and also oversize, then both the charges shown below will apply.
  • Unfortunately, extra baggage can't be purchased for infants.
  • Any excess baggage that you purchase is non-refundable and non-transferable.
  • Unfortunately, any bags weighing over 32kg will not be accepted.

Checking in extra bags or overweight bags for the hold

If you’d like to bring extra luggage over and above your free baggage allowance, you can pay online to check in up to seven extra bags per person. Each bag can weigh up to a maximum of 23kg with dimensions of up to 90 x 75 x 43cm (35.5 x 29.5 x 16ins). Any bags weighing over 23kgs will be charged for an overweight bag. And if that isn't enough then you can purchase up to 10 in total, you'll just need to do this at the airport. If travelling in Upper Class the maximum weight is 32kgs per bag

If you want to take more than 10 bags with you on your trip, you should contact our friends at Virgin Atlantic Cargo, they’ll be happy to help.

Checking in extra sports equipment

If you want to take a sports item as well as the bags you have checked into the hold, this will be classed as additional baggage, and the fees in the table below will apply.

Remember, if you already have checked in bags that are included in your ticket, you can swap one of these out for a sports item. Take a look at our Sports equipment page for more information on which sports items we accept.

How to add your bags to your booking

If you're taking up to 10 extra bags, you'll need to pay for these at the airport.

Travelling with a partner airline

If you're travelling with one of our partner airlines or your trip involves a transfer or connection from another airline, they may also charge an extra baggage fee if your checked in bags exceed their limit and you'll need to purchase your extra baggage at the airport.

You can find more information on this on our extra baggage charges for non Virgin operated flights page.

To US destinations

If you are travelling on a VS* codeshare flight connecting to or from the US (operated by one of our partner airlines), then as the marketing carrier, Virgin Atlantic's baggage allowance applies.
For any additional baggage and additional sporting equipment, you will need to check with the operating airline.

To all other destinations

If you are travelling on a VS* codeshare flight to a destination other than the US (operated by one of our partner airlines) there may be different allowances and fees based on the operating airline’s own policies.

Please check with the operating airline to determine its charges:

Delta Air Lines optional fees and charges

Jet Airways optional fees and charges

Air China optional fees and charges

Air New Zealand optional fees and charges
