Always our go to Hotel when in Cape Town, so when we had family visiting from the UK and wanting to spend a few days in the Cape, the Waterfront was our choice.
Location - The hotel is ideally situated for not only the V&A Waterfront, but Longmarket, The Company Gardens and Parliament, along with the Fort. All within in easy walking distance, as we had done in the past. Sadly Cape Town has changed since our last visit, as on checking in the Receptionist advised us against walking into the city centre or the V&A, a great disappointment, but as an older generation some good advice. Taxi's are available, but check with the Concierge who will get one for you. The hotel does have a courtesy bus to the V&A as well.
Room - Southern Sun rooms are always spacious, clean and well maintained. Likewise the on suite bathroom. Tea and coffee are available and the bathroom has all the little extras one wants. Beds are comfortable which make for a great nights sleep. Even with its location near the city centre and the busy streets below, the room are quiet. Add a view of Table Mountain and what more can one ask for.
Food - The Breakfast Buffet at the Southern Sun Waterfront, is one of the best. We always though it was great on our first stay over twenty years back. Now having travelled quite extensively it is still probably the best we have encountered. The range is simply extraordinary, from the juices, fruit and pastries to the hot full English you will not find a better place to start you day off. The breakfast restaurant can get very busy when the hotel is full so an early visit is advised.
The breakfast Staff are really helpful and will assist with getting you settled in at your table. They are also some of the best we have encountered. A very big plus for them and the hotel is the way they keep your table clean between you courses. Some International Luxury hotels we have stayed at are unable to maintain this type of service. It would be unfair to single anyone out as they were all brilliant.
We also had a number of meals and snacks at the Waterfront Bar, which were also excellent. Quick delicious meals in the evening from some very friendly bar staff.
Staff - From our check in at the Reception and Concierge to the friendly housekeeping team. We were met with smiles and nothing was too much to ask for. Restaurant Staff as already mentioned were brilliant!!! The courtesy bus drivers also deserve a mention for their superb service to the V&A and always have some interesting facts for you when engaged in conversation. One evening on returning from the V&A our bus was full, but the Cullinan bus took us back to our hotel.
If you are looking to stay in Cape Town the Southern Sun Waterfront is definitely on the look at.
