Not great.....blood on the pillows, broken showerhead. Customer service was very poor. Which is such a pity, as it has potential to be great, the room itself is quite modern, and the building is centrally located, however it has not been looked after, broken items in the room, the door stopper had broken off and was just placed loose on the floor, linen wasn't clean, in fact there was blood on the sheets and the pillow cases. The smell of weed throughout the hallway. Unbothered staff. Disappointed and won't be returning. Read less

The hotel agreed to move us to what they said would be a quieter room but this was adjacent to the church( see photo no 8) The church bells ring on the hour and the half hour and in spite of the double glazed windows the sound resulted in a very restless three further nights. I went to the church and politely asked them why the bells we rung throughout the night and they said that nothing could be done as it was the law. Other than that the hotel is okay, well located and clean but if you are a light sleeper you should look elsewhere. Read less

For my birthday we had travelled from the UK for a few days in Cape Town before flying to Port Elizabeth to go on safari. What it is important to note is that The Barracks is not a 5* full service luxury hotel. It is a serviced apartment complex which has been added to a historic building. It was recommended to us by our travel agent Trailfinders as an option that would allow us to be centrally located in Cape Town with enough space to accommodate the 4 of us while allowing us the flexibility to eat out or indeed eat in as our mood dictated. On arrival we arrived early from a long overnight flight and the staff took our luggage and allowed us to head out to see some of the sights of Cape Town until check-in time. They then sent a WhatsApp message to let us know that the room was ready. Our apartment had 2 bedrooms and was well equipped with large TV, fast wi-fi, microwave, fridge/freezer and even a washer/dryer (not mentioned on website but a useful surprise). The 2 bedrooms each had a king size bed. One bedroom had a balcony and en-suite shower room. There was an additional balcony off the lounge and a separate family shower room too. Each day our room was serviced, bins emptied and beds were made. It might have been helpful if the towels had been changed though more frequently. We took the boys up to the rooftop pool where there was a very nice private yoga studio. The studio also had a lovely coffee shop area and we had breakfast there one day and coffee another. It is quite a quiet area and we are not sure how much the other visitors enjoyed sharing the space with our 10 and 11 year old boys but the staff were lovely and helpful. Around the apartments were some lovely coffee shops and we ate in the VIXI restaurant across from the hotel twice as the food was so good and coming from the UK was very good value with a 2 course meal for our family of four for <£50. I think if we were to return to Cape Town we would be more than happy to stay here. We didn't have any expectation that we would be staying in a 5 star hotel but the rooms were spotlessly clean, well equipped and had a comfort level similar to a Premier Inn in the UK. We also felt safe and secure too with security at the entrance to the apartment block and the requirement to use a key card to access the floors where guest apartments were located. A comfortable and convenient stay. Read less

This place is very well located. Front of house can be tedious, uninterested persons, with a lot of "no". The facilities itself are excellent - fixtures, mattress, lighting, floors, overall design are amazing. The facilities itself are excellent - fixtures, mattress, lighting, floors, overall design are amazing. There is quite a long list of fines/ transgressions provided to you as patron, with some unenforceable under sectional title. Parking inside costs extra. I received no remote and relied in faith that staff would open the garage door when i left and entered, which was quite time consuming. The pool is owned and run by another entity with very short periods for swimming (closes at 1pm on weekends!). There is three sources of sound - an illegal night club diagonally across and three floors down from the unit I stayed in, a poorly insulated front door (so you hear all patrons in your corridor traipsing and cajoling in the corridor at any hour of the night) and a general aircon for the whole establishment that runs 24-7 (about 70 dB measured at the bed's pillow). if you are a heavy sleeper, then this place is just for you. if you are a light sleeper, i strongly recommend you avoid this place. I cannot recommend this hotel and strongly advise against booking it. They advertise facilities like the pool area, but it cannot be freely used as it is often privately rented out. Additionally, you need a special Pool Access Card, but not everyone is given one. The same issue applies to the "No Visitors Allowed" policy. When I addressed this with the director and the owner of the building, their response was shocking. They pointed at me and said, "There are rules, but these rules don’t apply to you," implying that my race (I am white) exempted me. The director even handed me his business card and wrote on the back: "Visitors allowed and Pool Access Card." He told me to give it to the reception, and I would get what I wanted. I confronted him, stating that this was racial profiling and blatantly racist. His reply was appalling: he said I needed to understand that "West Africans often come with their friends and families, which gets loud, things get broken, etc." I told him I don’t need to understand racism, and I will not support or recommend this accommodation. By endorsing such behavior, this establishment is undermining the fight against apartheid and perpetuating discriminatory ideologies. The daytime service at the reception is equally poor and unhelpful. However, I would like to commend the security staff, the evening concierge, and the housekeeping staff, who are all extremely kind and helpful. I can’t imagine what it must be like to work under such discriminatory management. Do not book this place. It’s a hard no. Read less
