“People Make Places”
If you’re visiting Johannesburg, I would wholeheartedly recommend staying at 54 on Bath.
I stayed for around ten nights, so I feel I experienced the hotel properly. During my stay I delivered a seven-day executive programme in the conference facilities on Level 2, and for four days I barely left the building because I came down with the flu. In other words, I really tested what it’s like to live in the hotel rather than simply sleep there.
The hotel’s greatest asset is, without question, its people.
Every member of staff I interacted with was warm, respectful and genuinely eager to help. Their kindness makes you feel less like a guest and more like someone they are looking after personally. It is hospitality at its very best.
The room—and indeed the hotel as a whole—embodied understated luxury. The building itself adds warmth, charm and character.
Everything worked exactly as it should, the bed was exceptionally comfortable, the linen immaculate, and every evening the thoughtful turndown service included little touches that made returning to the room a pleasure. My room overlooked the pool and enjoyed uninterrupted afternoon sunshine, beautiful sunsets and peaceful evening views.
The bathroom deserves a special mention too. The shower pressure and temperature were among the best I have experienced anywhere in the world, and after long teaching days—and particularly while recovering from flu—the hot baths and showers were exactly what I needed.
The location is outstanding.
Being connected directly to Rosebank Mall while also feeling secure and private is a huge advantage. There are excellent restaurants within a minute’s walk, and throughout my stay the staff were proactive in offering sensible local safety advice, which I genuinely appreciated as an international visitor.
Breakfast was consistently excellent.
In fact, I’d almost recommend not reading too much about it beforehand and simply enjoying the surprise each morning.
I also relied on room service extensively while I was unwell. It was consistently quick, beautifully presented and of a quality that exceeded my expectations.
The restaurant deserves special praise. The menu is imaginative without trying too hard, and my final three-course dinner was genuinely memorable. The oxtail dumplings and the pork belly delighted and surprised my senses in equal measure, while the famous tomahawk steak became something of a running joke during my stay!
The swimming pool area is another hidden gem. Even in winter it is a wonderful place to sit in the sun, and we even managed to host an impromptu drinks reception for more than fifty delegates, which the team handled with great professionalism and adaptability.
The complimentary pressing service for three items per day was another thoughtful feature that proved genuinely useful during a long business stay.
If I were to suggest improvements, they would be relatively minor. The television system could benefit from a technology refresh, and the event facilities could probably be modernised to better reflect the exceptional standard evident throughout the rest of the hotel.
None of these, however, changed my overall impression.
This hotel delivers exceptional value for money because of one simple reason:
People make places.
General Manager Grant and his team have created an environment that feels welcoming, calm and genuinely caring.
I left Johannesburg with wonderful memories, and much of that is thanks to the people at 54 on Bath.
When a hotel starts feeling like home after only a few days, you know they’re doing something special.
I certainly hope to be back soon.
