I received more than 5-star service at 54 on Bath. People who want to find problems, always can, for example a little chip in the paint or a spot on a carpet. However, I received even more real value than what was advertised.
This visit was for my birthday, and the hotel surprised me with a free upgrade and birthday dessert on arrival. My wife and I attended their famous High Tea to celebrate, and it truly was decadent (see the photo of the tiered tray of treats and the tea brewing equipment provided). The in-house selection, I think it was African Jade, was so good that we emptied the jug which kept the brew warm throughout. People would normally associate High Tea with sweets, and they're irresistible, but we love savory bites even more, where the queen prawns and the mushroom tartlets deserve special mention.
Accommodation is breakfast inclusive, and this is no ordinary breakfast. The smoked haddock omelette, served in a warm copper skillet, is peerless to mention just one.
This review is however about the service, which is where a real 5-star hotel shines. We had room service twice with different waiters, and they literally are the two best room service waiters ever. I always have lots of questions, and they answered and resolved anything I threw at them. It should be noted that the inclusive breakfast can also be ordered in-room by simply completing a form, no extra charge. It is served punctually and warm, with a smile.
I also had questions about the Frequent Guest program, and the manager on-duty called me back twice to explain everything. Too little is said and reported about Southern Sun's loyalty program, the benefits really are significant if you just alert them to your membership number. Notably, we even received the 15% restaurant discount for platinum members, on the room service dinner and the High Tea. This information is provided in a welcoming letter upon arrival, if one takes time to read the letter of course. This hotel is more aware than others in the hotel chain, of the frequent guest benefits and the needs of guests who ask questions.
Finally, something which is hidden deep in the detailed information, is that this hotel has a convenient link to Rosebank Mall. This shortens the walk to the Gautrain station significantly. The special entrance inside Rosebank Mall, is shown in my photographs.
Thank you 54 on Bath, for a birthday I will never forget. Traveling has become inconvenient nowadays, but thanks to the Gautrain Station nearby and the unique other-worldliness of Rosebank, this was like taking an overseas trip without any cars, airports and government red tape, just pure accessible luxury.
I would like to mention the hotel artworks by Ryan Hitchcock, Batha and others, which surpass the beauty of other famous art exhibitions available in the area. You don't even have to leave the hotel for an art tour, just explore the hotel and the dining room, and open your eyes. Next time we will also try to make time to listen to the in-house piano player who entertains guests in the evenings. The hotel rooms are properly sound-proofed, so one will have to go sit in the bar to listen to the piano!
