Motswari Private Game Reserve

Kruger and surrounds, South Africa

Star rating

The hotel

Private and serene, Motswari Private Game Reserve is small and intimate with no more than 30 guests present at any one time, allowing for peace and quiet aplenty. Family-run and All Inclusive, you’ll enjoy Southern African hospitality at its best here. Individual bungalows, each slightly different, offer a superior level of comfort with luxurious bathrooms and stunning views of the surrounding wilderness from your terrace. The owner has personally added her own unique touch with individual art pieces across the property. Extended game-drives at sunrise and sunset allow plenty of opportunity to spot the 'Big Five' as does a guided walk through the Savannah with one of the resort’s highly experienced and very friendly trail guides. If the sun feels too warm, it’s not a problem, enjoy a refreshing dip in the swimming pool any time of day. There’s also a lovely lounge area overlooking a waterhole where you can admire the visiting wildlife as you relax. Meals are served in the lounge or in the boma, a traditional fire side meeting place. Season dependent, you can also head into the bush for a picnic style breakfast or an early evening dinner under the stars.

The camp is beautiful, and the bungalows are each unique and yield a great safari experience! The food is also superb! The wildlife viewing in this area is not as plentiful as down in Zululand as far as plains game is concerned, but we still see plenty of wildlife, and especially the more rare species like leopard and wild dog. In fact, this is one of the reasons we come here. This camp never disappoints us! Read less

We came to Motswari on our honeymoon, not really knowing what to expect as we hadn’t been on safari before, but any expectations we did have were blown out of the water. The bungalow was beautifully decorated and had a really comfortable bed and a terrace which looked out over the dam, giving the chance to spot so much wildlife from your sun lounger. We saw elephants, waterbuck, giraffes, storks and kingfishers without leaving our room. On our 2nd night we stayed in the giraffe’s nest which is a treehouse overlooking a watering hole. Our dinner was waiting for us when we arrived along with enough snacks and drinks for about 20 people. It had a sink, flushing toilet and running shower, a powerful torch to see the animals in the dark and the best part was the retractable canopy so that we could sleep under the stars. The bed was the same one we had in the bungalow so we had a great nights sleep. We saw a hyena and were woken up by 3 hippos splashing in the water. The food was incredible, especially considering you’re in the middle of the bush. We never went hungry as there was so much choice at breakfast, lunch and dinner. The dinners were served in the traditional boma around a big fire which made it a really special occasion. We were led on the game drives by our guide, Owen, and our tracker, George. They were so knowledgable about every animal, plant and rock and didn’t complain about the endless questions. George’s eye for spotting animals was unbelievable, finding lions sleeping in the middle of the brush and spotting a very well camouflaged leopard sitting under a tree from about 75 metres away in the dark! We were there for 3 nights and saw all the big 5, plus so many more beautiful animals. I was amazed by the birds. The lodge staff were also fantastic, always friendly and with a smile on their faces and happy to chat with you. Nothing was too much trouble, they made us feel so welcome. The motto of Motswari is “arrive as guests, leave as friends” and we genuinely felt that way when we we went, we were so gutted to leave. Considering the price was very reasonable compared to a lot of other lodges in the area, I honestly don’t know what more we could’ve wanted, or got if we payed more. I cannot recommend Motswari enough, and if we’re lucky enough to be able to go on safari again, we’ll definitely be returning. Thank you team Motswari! Read less

Guide has 25 + years experience and tracker was native to that area and exceptional They collaborated with other camps and never more than two vehicles on a kill or other sighting. Staff were exceptional, many of them remembered your name and used it when speaking to you. This camp had dinner meals in a large dinning area with an elevated cement floor camp fire - large enough to heat all tables . Lunch and dinner were buffet prepared by chef and his team, 9or 10 staff would carry in the food singing an African song. Nice cultural touch. Then they would describe all the food prepared. Which was amazing. On two occasions the morning game drives were driven to dinning site in the bush, for real safari atmosphere. Read less

Motswari is a very special place mainly because of the wonderful team who look after their guests in the most professional and caring of ways. They really do everything to make your stay as wonderful as possible. They are so cheery, friendly and the best singers around. It was a joy to listen to them sing bringing in the food but even more special when they brought me a birthday cake and sang and danced encouraging me to join them. The food was absolutely delicious! A set starter and dessert but a buffet for the main you could choose from. We ate impala, kudu, eland, beef, lamb, fish with wonderful sauces, salads and vegetable dishes. Dinner was served around a huge fire pit which led to a lovely atmosphere and the local wines were so good. The accommodation has everything you need with your own private veranda looking out over a waterhole. Sitting by the pool, reading a book with a very cold beer after the morning safari was bliss. The safaris were outstanding. We had a dream team of Eden and Magic who made sure we saw everything we wanted to and more. Their knowledge is incredible which led to fantastic sightings of buffalo, lions, leopards, elephants, giraffes, kudu, water buck, rhino, hippos, crocs, beautiful birds - the list is endless. I loved getting up early, wrapping up warm and jumping into the landrover where blankets and hot water bottles were waiting for you. The morning light before sunrise was beautiful as were the sunsets as we drank sundowners. Thank you Motswari. You were wonderful. Read less
