The hotel

Private and serene, Motswari Private Game Reserve is small and intimate with no more than 30 guests present at any one time, allowing for peace and quiet aplenty. Family-run and All Inclusive, you’ll enjoy Southern African hospitality at its best here. Individual bungalows, each slightly different, offer a superior level of comfort with luxurious bathrooms and stunning views of the surrounding wilderness from your terrace. The owner has personally added her own unique touch with individual art pieces across the property. Extended game-drives at sunrise and sunset allow plenty of opportunity to spot the 'Big Five' as does a guided walk through the Savannah with one of the resort’s highly experienced and very friendly trail guides. If the sun feels too warm, it’s not a problem, enjoy a refreshing dip in the swimming pool any time of day. There’s also a lovely lounge area overlooking a waterhole where you can admire the visiting wildlife as you relax. Meals are served in the lounge or in the boma, a traditional fire side meeting place. Season dependent, you can also head into the bush for a picnic style breakfast or an early evening dinner under the stars.

This was the best safari experience of all we had while in Africa for a month during December to January when we visited South Africa, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Botswana. Our guide Hayden was amazing, taking us off-road into the bush to catch some incredible animal sightings. He and the 2 trackers, Patrick and David, had a skill that others we experienced did not at finding the Big Five up close and often during our 3 days at Motswari. The twice a day schedule was a bit crazy especially the 5:00 am game drives, but missing a bit of sleep was worth it over and over as we had incredible success catching so many animals at this preserve. The accommodations and the meals were also first class considered being out in the wild, and the entire staff was attentive and friendly, particularly in the restaurant and bar. If there is one safari experience not to miss in Africa, Motswari is it! Read less

The accommodation was really good with everything we needed. The food and drink was excellent and our location was fantastic and great for the safari drives we had each morning and afternoon. All of the staff were really friendly and went out of their way to make our experience memorable. Our guide and tracker, Josh and Patrick were exceptional and we had them for all our drives. We saw many different animals including the big 5 which was a treat. We saw lions on numerous occasions and herds of elephants and water buffalos. Also giraffes, rhinos, hippos, crocs, wild dogs, hyenas and a leopard on two occasions. All in all it was a fantastic experience that we will never forget. Thank you to all of the Motswari staff for making this experience really special. Read less

I can’t imagine anyone leaving a poor review for Motswari. My husband and I visited for five nights as part of a honeymoon trip. We were absolutely blown away by the accommodations staff and grounds. The camp is situated in the middle of the bush with individual villas for each set of guests for a total of 32 maximum. There was only Wi-Fi in the common area, but this made the experience that much better allowing us to fully focus on the animals and Safari, which is why we were there. Once it gets dark, they do have to escort you to and from your room, but this is purely for safety reasons which we completely understood. Our Guide Eden and tracker Magic made our game drives very educational and we were beyond blown away at all the animals we saw and how close we could get to them. The camp staff was very hospitable and friendly and provided us with anything we needed. The food was also fantastic! In between the morning and afternoon drives, they have a masseuse on site for massages and a beautiful pool overlooking the surrounding area that you can relax in with drinks. It was much more relaxing than we had thought about it being which was a plus for us. We also spent a night in the giraffes nest, which was a once in a lifetime experience; with a tree house like structure out in the middle of the bush by yourself. We saw a hyena and heard lions roaring all through the night. Overall, my husband and I thought this was the absolute perfect first Safari for us and we would highly recommend to anyone wanting to experience it. Thank you Motswari team! Read less

Brought my friend from the US to her very first safari. Based on past experience, I chose Motwasri and we had thousands to choose from. The lodge staff for the most part were very warm. With a morning drive ending at 10 am and a lunch at 3pm and afternoon drive at 4pm, we were left with 5 hours in the middle of the day with not much. WiFi in the main outdoor lodge/dining area ONLY, nothing in rooms. The WiFi was not not working for 50% of the time. During the 5 hours with nothing to do it would have been nice to have WiFi. Also during that down time, the employees are also very hard to find. At night, we were not allowed to leave the room until we were fetched at 8pm and walked to the dining area for obvious safety reasons. No phone in the room to call for someone to accompany us if we wanted to enjoy a pre dinner drink. They did have a whistle, which if blown would not only disrupt the peace, it would bring an armed guard running. The low point for me was our safari guide. Very little interaction with guests who were also first timers and it was very obvious that he using the radio to help find predators. This worked out well because he got the report of a leopard with a kill up the tree!!!!! Problem was on the other drives he zoomed past things we were keen to see yet would stop by a termite mound for 15 minutes in the blazing sun with a nice long story. So completely not reading the room. We asked to see more elephants, zebra, warthogs, giraffe, etc. On the last evening drive I was bringing my glass of wine on and he said bad idea and took my glass of wine. Of course I know a glass is a bad idea! I was hoping he’d put it in a metal one but nope , he snatched it and put it at the reception. As we climbed in he told us he’d like to try and find a white lion. I asked what are the odds of finding one and he said 5%. We of course never found a white lion, in-fact we only saw one hippo. For our sundowner, he left us in the blazing sun and took off rock climbing and bush bashing to see the sunset view but three of us were only wearing sandals not suitable for climbing. I got heat sick and miserable and had to skip dinner. We skipped the 4th drive that we paid for just because we couldn’t bare this tone deaf guide for another minute. We actually couldn’t wait to leave. We lodged a complaint with the operations manager and he asked for 24 hours to get back to me and I thought they would make an adjustment on the bill or and invitation back but all I got was an apology. At least we drove ourselves out of the park and got to stop and look at elephants for as long as we wanted. Read less

I am not one to review - in fact this is the first review I have ever written. I'm doing so because the experience was so exemplary it warrants the effort. It was my partner's trip (I was less excited on the prospect). However, the whole experience was overwhelming. As far as Motswari was concerned Elizabeth and the catering team put forward outstanding food, including two meals which will stay with me as long as I can remember (and I am fairly spoilt in the culinary world). The ambience was delightful. The staff knew your name from the start, were engaging in exactly the right manner, and couldn't do enough to help. Our safari team of Josh & David were brilliant in knowledge, enthusiasm, and we felt thoroughly safe and educated in their hands, whilst seeing exceptional wonders. Even the other trackers on the other jeeps were pleased to help, giving the whole environment a sense of engagement, fun and exceptional service. I can't recommend the lodge and team enough. Read less
