Sadly, there seems to be a big problem with homelessness and drug use all across Calgary but it was particularly bad on the street and in the park area right outside the hotel which did not feel particularly safe (even during the day). Although the hotel management cannot possibly have any control over this issue, I think anyone who is travelling alone or with children for example should take this situation into consideration before booking this hotel. Unfortunately we didn’t enjoy our stay in Calgary or this hotel much. The location itself is ok - 15 minute walk from downtown. The problem the hotel has is it’s in the middle of some really rubbish sights and areas. Surrounded by construction work (not the hotels fault obvs) but the surrounding area has an abundance of a homeless problem. It made walking around the area quite unpleasant. This is very clearly a ‘Calgary’ issue, but it did affect our happiness in the hotel. Had to move rooms when we first got there due to a strong cigarette smell The second room was boiling hot, and the AC unit was the loudest I’ve ever heard. The pool was nice (but cold!) but we continually had to ask for towels to be replaced as they were never there when guests needed them Shower was weak but manageable. The restaurant below had nice food (but the staff were grumpy) Overall, the quality of the hotel and area was just poor but certainly not the worst I’ve stayed in in Canada ! Read less

If you are staying in Calgary, this hotel is definitely worth considering. Great location by the tram/train line which is part free. Very helpful and friendly staff. The room was spacious and reasonably modern. Swimming pool is a bonus - very clean and towels provided. We used the Moxies restaurant for a breakfast which was great.

Hallway was not vacuumed for weeks As final insult we had fire alarm in middle of night on August 02 , descended down stairs and waited for someone to inform us what to do . I heard from other guests it was false alarm ( 3 fire trucks were on scene ) In the morning during the check out they pretended that was “ not a big deal “ and I was overreacting , in regards of room it is normal that guest cleans and they replenish towels for “ free” Never again in any of these brand of hotel , Read less

The Sandman is a convenient hotel in the central Downtown Core of Calgary, within easy walking distance of downtown restaurants on Stephen Avenue. It is usually more affordable than other downtown hotels, and the rooms are spacious if a bit dated. However, everything was really clean! The elevators do get busy so there is sometimes a wait to use them. And the bathrooms are just way too small. However, it is still a good place to stay and I would stay there again. The highlight was the excellent staff, very professional. In particular, Zalak really helped me out and came to the rescue when I was in need. Many thanks! Read less
