We travelled to the Island of Antigua with WestJet vacations from February 8th to 15th and stayed at the Royalton Antigua, which is an all-inclusive family resort. The resort is comprised of 294 suites, 8 restaurants, 5 bars, and 3 swimming pools. The resort is situated only 30 minutes from V.C. Bird International Airport, in the Five Island Village. High speed internet is solid throughout the resort. The transfer from the airport to the resort was handled by Nexus Tours.
The check-in process was very smooth and many thanks to Kyanna at the reception desk who was very helpful to us. He deserves 5-stars for his customer service skills.
We used the Gourmet Marché (buffet) for breakfasts and a few dinners. There were plenty of selections and we had the option of having selections prepared fresh at a few stations. We dined one evening at the Grazie Italian Trattoria, and enjoyed a wide range of well-known Italian comfort food. By far our favorite was the Hunter Steakhouse, going back on a few occasions to sample different items on the menu. If you love steak, this is the place to go. Tasty salads and soups to start, and if you have the room after your entrée, you must try a dessert. We tried the SCORE Brewhouse for lunch one day, but the service was slow, appetizers and entrées arriving at the same time, but the food was good. Our favorite place for lunch was a toss-up between Beach Club Grill and Nibbles. Now I may have gotten them mixed up, to clarify there is a small Airstream trailer near the kid’s pool who make fantastic nachos, burgers, and other fare, and a restaurant just at the side of the beach where they make the most delicious jerk chicken wings, WOW! They also make wraps, tacos, etc. which are so delicious. One place we cannot forget, the Coffee Lounge & Scoops Gelato! They have oven fresh baked breads, pastries, cakes, ice cream/gelato! So Good!
Just a note, there is a recommended dress code, although it was not observed by all. When it is Evening casual in the à la carte, for the ladies, recommended dress, blouse, skirt, while for the gentlemen, dress pants and shirt. Respect for our hosts would be the same way we would dress when going out at home. At lunch time and at the buffet, resort casual dress, jeans, shorts, and t-shirts is acceptable. Again, common sense should be applied. A shout out to the housekeeping staff who also did a really great job of keeping our room nice and neat. One of the nice things about this resort, not so much of the towel game on the lounge chairs by the pool or the beach, yes there were a few, but not to the extent that you will find at other resorts.
I will be honest, when I read some of the negative reviews on this site, I was a little concerned, but I have stayed at Royalton Resorts before and never had an issue. So as usual, I decided to lower my expectations, just in case, and was very pleasantly surprised. We received great service from some amazing people. Antiguans are warm friendly people who are happy to welcome visitors to their island, and we should be grateful that they are willing to share their homeland with us. I look forward to another visit to this gem of the leeward islands in the Caribbean region.
