We recently stayed at the Grand Hyatt Baha Mar (the Reserve) with friends, and the experience did not reflect a 5-star standard in multiple areas of our stay.
Across our visit, we encountered consistent issues with service, communication, and attention to detail. Most situations we would not even document until something (see the final bullet point below) on the last day determined that something must be said. These examples are only part of a broader pattern of concerns we experienced during our stay:
-At a paid cabana experience at the Nexus, we were not proactively serviced, and basic requests such as drink orders and amenities were not addressed.
-Our experience with the butler service was also concerning. Throughout the majority of our stay, there was minimal proactive engagement. Requests for coffee were made twice, including one instance that took over an hour to be fulfilled. Beyond these interactions, we were not meaningfully checked on until the final day, when we were actively sought out across the resort in relation to gratuity. As service fees are already calculated onto the cost, to be actively sought out for additional money was tacky and added to our list of concerns. All in all, the lack of consistent service presence throughout the stay, followed by end-of-stay outreach, did not align with expectations of butler-level hospitality.
-Dining experiences were also inconsistent. Specifically, at one of the resort restaurants, Marcus, standard items such as butter, salt, and pepper required multiple requests, and a steak was not prepared correctly even after being sent back. Service both at the resort and the resort's fine dining establishments were lacking and we often had to 'flag down' servers for even basic requests like more water.
-The most serious issue occurred in our suite, where we discovered a used condom under the bed on our final day. This was immediately reported to management. The response we received was that it would be “used for training purposes,” without any apology or even acknowledgment of the seriousness of the situation. Given that housekeeping had accessed the room multiple times during our stay, this raised significant concerns about the resort's cleanliness and oversight.
While we are always respectful guests, tip generously, and understand that issues can occur in hospitality, the overall experience reflected a lack of consistency, urgency, and care across multiple touchpoints.
All of that said, there were a handful of staff members who truly stood out and made parts of the stay enjoyable. The staff in the complimentary (for Reserve guests) areas were exceptional, with special recognition to Luther, JoJo, Stephen, and Michelle (the service manager of this area). They consistently went above and beyond and represented true hospitality in both service and demeanor.
Our tip: We have also stayed at Atlantis and have experienced a much higher level of service and attentiveness there, for similar price points.
