Playa Mujeres, Mexico

Star rating

The hotel

Experience the two sides of Cancun in one luxurious hotel — the beauty of the beach and the life and soul of Mexico’s ultimate party mecca. Along a private sweep of sands, tiered lagoons spill down the centre of Dreams Playa Mujeres, with three main pools, a children’s pool and six hot tubs, a waterpark, and a mini-splash park... all making this the definitive aqua paradise. Relaxation also comes in the form of the adventures of the kids’ and teens’ clubs, and the indulgence of 10 restaurants, with 24-hour dining on the table. But this is Cancun, so the party’s never far. The fun of downtown’s approximately an hour away and, before you head out, you’ve got 13 bars and lounges to sip at, and live entertainment from stage shows to beach parties.

My family and I have always used the Hyatt chain of hotels while traveling, especially the Dreams/Secrets Resorts. These usually provide a higher quality of service, well kept properties and a level of prestige. However, after this experience, I will be exploring other brands for my future vacation needs. There was definitely some of the Dreams quality here, but also a lot of downfalls. Service- the service on the resort was great! The staff were awesome at the restaurants/bars and around the pools. Omar with VIP services was excellent! Housekeeping was amazing. Our room was always kept clean. We never needed clean towels as they were always restocked. The bar fridge was always filled and turndown service had a nice touch every night. Front desk staff and concierge staff were a big miss. Concierge was almost redundant. They refused to do any bookings for us and always directed us to use the Hyatt App. During checkout, the attendant refused to help us. When we asked for a luggage trolly he refused to allow us to use one and said he would send a bellboy to our room. No bellboy came and my family and I had to drag our luggage without the use of a cart. The attendant later stated this was for liability purposes. He also advised us that Dulce (24hr snack bar) did not serve coffee at 6am, which was inaccurate. There was a pot of coffee at the Piano Bar that appeared to have been sitting out for many hours and this is where we were directed to get our morning coffee. Since this was sitting in the hot Mexican climate, the milk was warm. When we asked the attendant for cold milk he sarcastically retorted with, “you don’t like warm milk”. This was a very poor final impression. Pools- there were many pools scattered around the resort. This helped spread people out and we never really felt like the pools were crowded. The pools however were really warm, like bath water warm! The Grotto pool was shaded so this was the coolest pool, but also the smallest. The two water slides were okay. One of the general pools got closed for a while for a wedding event. Uncommon to see a common pool get closed for a private event. This was one of the only times the other pools felt crowded. There was also an incident where a child fell into a loose access door by a hot tub. This looks like a square tile that can be easily removed to conduct repairs inside the tub. The child stepped on this tile, it flipped open like a hatch and his leg went into the access hole. When the child removed his leg he was bleeding everywhere. He severed his foot inside the access hole when his leg fell in. The first aid staff were there quickly. However, staff poured pool water over the blood and spread it with a squeegee around the pool deck. No sanitation process took place after the incident and the hot tub was never drained. The Lazy River- this pool was a hit!! When we first got there, the water level was below the pool skimmers. There was a lot of leaves and flowers in the water and the skimmers could not do their job. We reported this to Omar and within 48-hours the pool was filled to the appropriate level. Water tubes could always be found and loungers were always available. Food/Bars- the food on the resort was above average for resort food. The a la carte restaurants were great and the service there was nice. The Brazilian style roadizio service was a nice touch. The World Cafe buffet was mediocre. It’s a Wrap or Tides provided a much better lunch experience. Dulce the 24-hour cafe was excellent. The coffee (hot, iced and frozen), snacks and ice cream were all yum around the clock. The staff in Dulce were always super nice and helpful. The hibachi experience was also nice if you are able to secure a booking. Booking opens at 1pm daily and you have to be on the app ready to book or you will miss out for that day. Bars were scattered around the resort and the drinks provided were what you would expect. Entertainment- the entertainment crew was around doing volleyball or aqua aerobics throughout the day. Most other activities were children directed. Things for adults to do seemed to get overlooked. The nightly shows were VERY repetitive. Same acts, different costumes. The shows were also geared primarily towards children. Hyatt App- nice touch! Allows you to do spa bookings, hibachi bookings, see activities taking place and see the show for the night. Definitely saves you from looking around the resort for an information board. The WiFi was also great on the resort. Property- the property was beautiful but definitely needs maintenance. Pools had lights falling off, tiles coming off, jets not working and the water levels seemed low; as if the pools were leaking. In some areas, the pool jets weren’t even covered by water and were just shooting water out onto dry surfaces. The booking site advertised “infinity pools”, but due to the low water levels this was not the case. The beach had nice white sand and many loungers. Unfortunately, the ocean water was red flagged due to seaweed but that’s not the resort’s fault. The on-site dolphin attraction was a nice addition. All-in-all it was not a bad experience but not the Dreams experience I am used to. When booking our vacations I only explore Dreams (for my family) or Secrets (for my wife and I). After this experience, I will be exploring other alternatives. Give another resort chain a shot. For a Dreams resort, I feel this one lacked the prestige to be expected at this price point. Read less
