The hotel

Living up to its ‘authentically Bali’ mantra, Nusa Dua Beach Hotel and Spa - Handwritten Collection feels like a reincarnated Balinese palace. Every element’s lavish, with its three exquisite tree-fringed pools, sumptuous spa, gym, and seven bars and restaurants all adding to the fantastical feel. But nothing’s quite as regal as its grounds, where tropical greenery spills over balconies, tumbles through gardens, and comes to rest on the pure white sands of its beach. The effect’s a serene setting for garden tours, coconut leaf weaving, and traditional dance classes – and for Gecko Club’s child-focused island experiences. Inside its nine hectares, a dramatic temple-like structure splits to reveal an elaborate lily pond festooned with water features; Balinese guest rooms (including Butler-served Club rooms) divulge garden, pool, or beach scenes; and the incredible bamboo web of its double-decked brasserie opens up to hypnotic Indian Ocean views.

The first question I always ask myself is: would I come back? The answer is yes, despite a few flaws that, in my opinion, should be addressed. The setting is charming, with beautiful architecture, spacious grounds, lush greenery, and direct beach access. There are several restaurants on-site. The Balinese restaurant isn’t very good. The beachfront Mediterranean one is decent, and the Asian restaurant is quite good. There’s also a small spot serving Mexican food that’s not bad at all. The beach is clean, well-maintained, and there are no safety issues. There’s plenty of room for everyone. The main downside, as usual, is the pool area—particularly the large pool, where it’s almost impossible to find a spot unless you get up at 7 a.m. to claim a lounger with a towel. Of course, those towels often sit there unattended for half the day. It’s really time for management to address this issue, as it creates a lot of frustration. Another drawback is breakfast. It’s decent overall, though it’s a bit surprising to find a halal-style buffet—with no bacon or ham. You get used to it. The absence of fresh orange juice is also a surprise, but again, you adapt. However, what’s truly unbearable is the loud Balinese music played from early morning—it really gets on your nerves. A lot of guests seem to have figured this out and head toward the back of the dining area, around tables 74 and 75, where there are no loudspeakers. The rooms are quite decent, although the furniture is noticeably dated. Not all rooms are in the same condition—some are clearly better maintained than others. You just have to be careful not to end up in one that’s a bit run-down. That said, some rooms are really nice. The hotel itself is relatively old, which comes with its pros and cons. On the plus side, the vegetation has had time to grow beautifully, giving the whole place a lush, tropical garden feel. On the downside, anything made of wood inside the rooms has definitely taken a beating over the years. The staff is impeccable, as always in Bali. The hotel also provides taxi services, and we only dealt with reliable people. The entertainment is okay. The guest mix seemed to be roughly 50% European (including Australians in that count) and 50% from other parts of the world. Overall, it’s a pleasant hotel. We stayed in a “superior” room with a bathtub—I’m not sure of the exact category name, but it was quite good. Honestly, the only two truly frustrating aspects were the towel system and the breakfast music. During our 10-day stay, we were never once able to find a spot at the main pool because all the loungers were “reserved” early in the morning with towels. And that Balinese music at breakfast—it drives everyone crazy. You can see it on people’s faces: they rush to grab the back tables I mentioned earlier, the only ones not blasted by loudspeakers. Sometimes people are even standing, waiting for those specific tables to be cleared, while plenty of tables remain empty under the speakers. That’s how unbearable the music is—it can honestly ruin your morning if you are used to peace full moments. Read less

The rooms are a beautiful tradition Balinese style. The gardens are lush and well maintained. All of the staff are friendly, attentive and lovely. There are plenty of restaurant options and all reasonable priced. And the beach out the front has these beautiful trees to lie on your sun bed under. Although it’s a large hotel, it never felt overcrowded—apart from the breakfast rush—and the rooms were always peaceful and quiet. The staff were friendly, helpful, and always ready to assist. The beachfront location is fantastic, with a beautiful stretch of sea right at your doorstep. The pools are great too, though finding a sunbed by the pool could be tricky at times. We actually preferred the quieter sunbeds on the beach, which offered a more relaxing experience. The hotel is just a short walk or quick taxi ride to Bali Collection, where you’ll find plenty of shopping and dining options. There are also some excellent local restaurants within walking distance if you want to explore beyond the resort. Our room was spacious, clean, and very comfortable. We enjoyed several meals at the hotel restaurants—delicious food and fairly priced for a resort of this standard. Overall, a great choice for a relaxing beach holiday with easy access to amenities and a touch of luxury. Read less
