The hotel

Visits to Florida aren't all about theme parks and children's attractions - there's plenty of places full of history and culture to explore at a slower pace, and St Augustine is one of them! Claimed to be the oldest city in the US, you can enjoy a mix of a beach holiday with an educating city break staying here at the Embassy Suites right on the oceanfront. Upgrade to a room with a balcony for views of the expansive pool and the beach all in one - because that's how close you are to the sand! The Castillo de San Marcos is the oldest masonry fort in the continental US, and it's just 10 minutes away for you visit and explore. On your way back, enjoy the many bars and restaurants in the area, or cool down at Castaway Cantina back at the hotel with it's impressive selection of cervezas - it certainly fits in with the Spanish feel of this town.

The poor customer service started right at check-in and continued throughout our stay. We arrived prior to the standard check-in time and I simply asked “do you know about how long before the room will be ready?” Giuseppi’s curt response was “room’s guaranteed by 4.” I was told I would receive a text when my room was ready, but I never received one and had to ask the front desk a second time. The hotel offers a chat feature through the app, but they might as well remove it based on how long a response takes (if you get a response at all). I raised my poor experience to the front desk during my stay, but nothing was done and no manager ever reached out to me. A nice hotel just doesn’t overshadow subpar service. Read less

I stayed at this hotel expecting a premium experience, given the high price point. Unfortunately, what I got was the opposite. First, there’s no self-parking option — valet only, at a steep $40 per day. Upon checking in, I discovered the sink in my room was completely clogged. Inconvenient, but I hoped it would end there. The worst part came at checkout. I have Type 1 diabetes and needed to store my insulin temporarily after checking out. Every other hotel I’ve stayed at has been accommodating in this situation — it’s a medical necessity, not a convenience. But I was told, flatly and coldly, that “it’s against policy” and there was “nothing they could do.” No fridge, no staff assistance, nothing. It was not only unacceptable but incredibly humiliating to be dismissed like that over something so critical to my health. This hotel failed on basic hospitality and empathy. I expected better — and I will never return. Read less

What a beautiful hotel inside and out!! We had an ocean front view. We loved waking to the gorgeous sunrise with the ocean waves and birds chirping. Such a peaceful way to wake up! It was fun to take a morning and evening walk along the shore. The grounds of this hotel are spectacular. There is an area for outdoor activities…a large chess set on the grass, pingpong table and morning yoga. The pool had more than plenty of comfortable lounge chairs with umbrellas and small tables. There is a bar with food and drinks with music. The temperature of the pool is just perfect. They provide chairs and umbrellas if you would like to hang out by the shore. When you come back on the property a hose is there to wash your feet. The rooms were large, beautifully decorated and a comfortable bed. We appreciated the microwave and fridge in the room. There are chairs on the balcony with a small table to drink your morning coffee. In the morning they have the best continental breakfast with an omelet bar. and coffee bar. Yummy!!! There is so much staff to help you too. You can eat inside or they had many great seating areas outside in a beautiful courtyard with views of the ocean. In the evenings they offer happy hour with free snacks, $2 beer, well drinks were free and $4 for premium drinks. The hotel lobby has everything you would ever need to purchase such as snacks, beverages, alcoholic beverages, outdoor toys, surf lessons, a shop with clothing and much more. The staff were all pleasant and very helpful. The valet checks your car in by text messages which made it so convenient. We hated to leave!! You will be so happy here!!! Read less

We recently spent 6 nights at this hotel. On the positive side, the hotel feels higher end but has a relaxed and informal feel. The breakfast offering is quite good. Every night they have a happy hour with complementary drinks and light snacks. Some people drink at the bar, some go outside to enjoy the weather. The pool area is large with plenty of areas to sit. Lots of umbrellas and towels available. The pool restaurant has salads and burgers, but is somewhat expensive. There are several open-air casual restaurants within walking distance. Prices are reasonable and service is good. We enjoyed getting off the grounds, walking to dinner or lunch. (We particularly enjoyed and vibe and menu of the Sunset Grill. The hotel has its own restaurant, which we used once, but it seems not attract much of a following.) The beach is fantastic, and great for lounging or walking. The room was quite nice, but the lack of storage for clothing was a bit odd. We ended up living out of suitcases due to the lack of storage, which seemed odd for a pretty large suite. The courtyard areas are generous and offer plenty of comfortable seating. The happy hour included live music each night. On the negative side, the $40 per day valet parking charge seems excessive (and annoying). Although the service was good, each time we used it (just a few times) we received a text soliciting tips for the valet staff. I am a pretty strong tipper, but I was annoyed at the aggressive request to put tips on top of a $40 daily charge. There were also several tip jars in the breakfast area as well as the bar at happy hour. It may be me, but constant solicitations for tips seems a bit out of step with a higher class hotel/resort that this hotel seems to aspire to. Also on the negative side is the fitness room....it is relatively small and not well equipped if you want to lift weights. If working out is your thing, this may not be your place. Last, the pool is large but shallow....I'm a swimmer and doing anything resembling laps was not an option. In short, if you are looking for a pretty strong value and good service, we can recommend this hotel. And you almost don't need a car if you are just hanging out at the hotel, pool, and beach. I will give this a 5 star rating, but a 4.5 seems about right. Read less
