Where is it

On the beachfront, a short stroll to shopping, dining, and nightlife of Clearwater Promenade, and half a mile from Pier 60. Distance from Tampa International Airport: 21.5 miles.

230 rooms and suites. All with Gulf of Mexico views, private balcony, floor-to-ceiling windows, air-conditioning, flat-screen TV, mini-fridge, coffee maker, safe and hairdryer. 

Spacious Gulf Front Rooms (previously named Premium Gulf Front) are 360 sq ft with large balconies that boast views of the Gulf, with either 1 king-size bed or 2 queen-size beds, plus sofa-bed, sleeping maximum 4 people.

One Bedroom Gulf Front King Suites offer views of the beachfront and the Gulf of Mexico, and feature a separate living room with queen-size sofa bed, dining table for four, kitchenette, bathroom with separate shower and tub, and master bedroom with 1 king-size bed, sleeping maximum 3 people.

Please note: There is currently a new hotel being built across the street from Opal Sands. The project is anticipated to be finished towards the end of 2024, and work will take place between the hours of 7.00am-4.00pm Monday to Friday. There may be some minor disruption, but no significant noise should be heard. All of the Premium King and Queen rooms face the Gulf of Mexico and do not look over the construction site.

Hotel is nice but overpriced. Needs updating. Opal Sol, the sister property is connected and has two pools as well as a market (snacks, coffee, drinks, etc.) Opal Sol is new in 2025. If we return to the area we will stay at Opal Sol. Opal Sands is okay but will not choose in the future.

Been here many times due to the prime location and service, however noticed this time (which was a weekend) hotel seems to encourage and cater for loud offensive frat boys and the equivalent immature girls who decided to start vaping in the pool despite it being against the hotels policy. Totally took over the whole pool, looked like some kind of tacky pool party. Fortunately, due to the opening of their new Opal Sol we were able to utilise the new facilities and visit their pool. Here, we were greeted by Cam who was absolutely amazing, found us beds and bought us over an umbrella, made us feel more welcome and at home than we’d felt during our whole time here. Unfortunately, we then had to evacuate the pool due to “an accident” which we can only assume was a child… maybe time for a child free pool… please. Later that evening we tried to get a table in sea guini, naturally they were so uninviting and rude that after they expressed shock at our lack of booking we thought okay don’t bother… as long as your college students are happy I guess?? Unfortunately, upon arrival this time we were given room 1013, on entering we knew it was different, it looked shabby and worse for wear. Went to use the bathroom and noticed handrails all around, and a bath with a shower curtain - not walk in style of normal rooms. Seemed to be an accessible room which we didn’t want nor request. However when we asked to change and it was no problem at all but slightly concerned that if you have requested an accessible room, what we saw of it was quite shabby and below par, that isn’t fair. The standard rooms are lovely but could do with some refreshing, they are starting to show their age. But overall it is still a fab hotel. Location can’t be beat and staff are amazing, we love returning it’s just the first year it feels like it needs a few touch ups. Read less
