Coco Key Hotel & Water Park

International Drive, Orlando

Star rating

The hotel

Not only does CoCo Key offer great family rooms with plenty of space in the heart of Orlando, it boasts it's own water park too — one of the best in the area! With 14 slides, three heated pools and a state-of-the-art gaming arcade, kids of all ages can play to their hearts content all day, every day. You're also just a hop and a skip away from a myriad of Orlando attractions (including the theme parks), so there's never a dull moment! And although restaurants abound (you can walk to over 50 restaurants and shops), The Tradewinds Restaurant on-site is a great place to dine, feasting on deep south favourites, followed by amazing dessert selections. A daily entertainment program means the kids will be making friends in no time, including movies screened by the pool and interesting activities that are hosted by the hotel staff. Look for the hotel mascot CoCo in the morning and afternoon for photo opportunities.

This was our 2nd stay at CoCo Key’s Waterpark and Hotel, the first being back in 2022. That first time? Couldn’t fault it. We were in the main building, accessed by lift, with two queen-sized beds — standard stuff, and exactly what we expected. Because two queen beds seemed to be the norm, I got organised months in advance this time and emailed the hotel. My kids are older now, so I asked for two singles (or bunk beds if they fancied being creative). I also asked for a higher floor for security reasons — maybe overcautious, maybe not, but hey, I tried. After a month, I got an apologetic reply saying they’d “look into it.” Another month passed… tumbleweeds. Fast forward to arrival: $100 deposit taken, and off we went to our room — ground floor, car park view, two doubles, and an interconnecting door to a very lively family next door. Not quite the peaceful setup I had in mind. I went back to reception, explained the situation, and was told I could only switch to single beds if I upgraded. I said I didn’t care about the beds, just put me higher up. Same answer: upgrade required. Apparently, my first visit must’ve included a secret upgrade, so expectations were set way higher than reality. Lesson learned — but still, ignoring my email months before? A quick “sorry, no can do” would’ve gone a long way. The Rooms: Very clean and serviced daily. Air con worked like a jet engine — loud enough that my in-laws (who stayed here on my glowing recommendation, oops) had to turn theirs off at night. Personally, I was too wiped out from the theme parks to care. If you’re used to city noise, you’ll be fine. Location & Food: The location is excellent. Breakfast was good, if a bit pricey. My only gripe? Juice cups the size of shot glasses. I’m not on a juice-tasting class — give me a proper glass! Instead, you end up knocking back five in a row or juggling three at the table like you’re in a circus. Waterpark & Facilities: The waterpark is fantastic for hotel guests — towels provided, plenty to do, kids entertained. Would I pay separately to enter? Probably not, but included in the stay, it’s brilliant. The only eyebrow-raiser was the rule banning kids from wearing goggles on the slides. Really? That’s the hill we’re dying on? Absurd. The arcade’s fun too, though your wallet may not agree. Shops: The onsite shops are daylight robbery — $5–6 for a Monster, $4 for a bottle of water. Do yourself a favour and stock up at the supermarket across the road. Pool: Open until 10pm, weather permitting. Some people moan about it closing when cloudy, but honestly, Florida storms aren’t to be messed with. Go in August and you’ll see what I mean — lightning shows every afternoon. Just roll with it. Transport: Handy extras — one free iTrolley voucher a day, plus a free shuttle to Universal (ask reception). Ubers/Lyfts to Universal run $7–12, Disney $12–18. Peak times push it to $20–25, but that’s still cheaper than paying the parks’ parking fees. Overall: We only had breakfast at the hotel; loads of better dining options nearby if that’s more your thing. Would I come back? Probably, but with reservations (pun intended). You just never know what you’ll walk into until you get there. I’m aiming for 2027 or 2028 — assuming someone at CoCo Key’s eventually replies to the email I sent on 7/13/25.
