“Extremely Disappointed on My Daughter’s Birthday Stay”

My daughter chose to celebrate her 13th birthday at Universal’s HHN, and like we have done for over 10 years, I booked the Loews Portofino Bay Hotel at Universal Orlando. I reserved back in April, noting that I would be bringing my Yorkshire and that four people would be staying in the room. I have stayed at this hotel countless times , most recently in August 2025, March 2025, October 2024, and March 2024. These visits have always been part of our family’s special moments, which is why this experience was so upsetting. This morning, around 8am, I checked in and requested to stay on the first floor, as our assigned room was 2576. The front desk agent said she would make a note and let me know. By noon, having received no response, I sent a text. Shortly after, I received a call informing me I would be moved to another area of the hotel. I explained that I preferred to stay in the Villa, as I always have. That’s when the VIP Manager, Matthew Rogers, came on the phone. It is hard to believe he holds this position. He did not let me speak. I had to ask for the chance to explain. His answers were dismissive, and when I asked why a guest who pays extra for a deluxe club room, marking a dog on the reservation, would be downgraded to a smaller room on the other side of the hotel, he said “I don’t know” and that it was “for safety.” If the manager doesn’t know how reservations work, how are guests expected to? Now I am in one room which has no sliding door and no direct access to the outside unless I leave the building, funny, considering he had said it would be better on the first floor for door access. When I asked to change rooms, the only option he offered was even farther away from the Club I paid extra for. He never offered to refund the price difference. I had to demand it. He was impatient, raised his voice, and even told me he “didn’t want to argue.” But I was not arguing. I was asking fair questions that deserved honest answers. This situation feels like misleading: guests can book and pay extra for a deluxe club room, clearly note that they have a dog, but when they arrive, they are quietly downgraded to a smaller room far from the Club. If the guest does not know the hotel and does not notice or ask, the hotel keeps the price difference without ever offering a refund. This is not transparent, it is not fair, and it is certainly not VIP treatment. The result was that I had no choice: either accept the smaller room or have my daughter’s birthday experience ruined. This is unacceptable. After more than 10 years of loyalty, I feel I must seriously reconsider my choices and look at other hotels. Finally, no manager should ever talk over a guest, raise their voice, or dismiss questions, especially a male manager like Matthew Rogers addressing a female guest. This behavior is unprofessional, disrespectful, and does not reflect the reputation of a hotel like the Loews Portofino Bay Hotel at Universal Orlando.

Stayed 3 nights at the Portofino Bay Hotel. Very nice Italian themed hotel. Walking distance to Universal theme parks and city walk. Also, there is a water taxi to City Walk. Check in was easy. Room was spacious. The hotel is one of Universal's top tier hotels. When you check in they give you your free Universal Express pass which gets you to the front of the lines for rides and attractions. The free pass practically pays for the price of the room. Restaurants and a Starbucks on site with plenty of outdoor seating by the lake. I would stay here again.

“Beautiful hotel”

We stayed in a club level room. For some reason it was the same price as a normal room when booking so it was a no brainer! The room was spacious and clean with a lovely view of the harbour. We found the club lounge really good. Breakfast was a bit monotonous- exactly the same each day. Was also a little disappointed that there wasn’t any sausage or bacon. There was scrambled egg, potatoes, boiled eggs, bagels, pastries, cheese and ham, fruit and juices. Snack time was just crisps, snack bars, garlic bread, cold cuts and bread. We used this time to stock up on park snacks. Dinner was really good. One night was steak, then Madeira beef, chicken, shrimp pasta, bolognese…. There was salads. Cold cuts, cheese and crackers. We really enjoyed it. You could also get beer and wine which included Stella and Peroni. We didn’t eat at any of the restaurants, just a take out pizza from Sals. We found it quite greasy. The hotel itself was beautiful. We only went to the beach pool once. Even with our teens we found it too loud. The villa pool was our choice. So quiet with chilled out music. Perfect. We booked here after cancelling Hard Rock on the strength of negative reviews and I’m so glad we did!!
