We stayed at Riu Atoll (not the Palace side) in one of the Junior Overwater suites with the standard all-inclusive package from Jan 4-10, 2025. Overall our stay was very good. The housekeeping and service were excellent throughout the resort. As a frequent traveler, there were a few things we thought they could improve to make the experience even better. The top thing would be to provide sunscreen at the pools and beach area! The place is literally at the equator and the sun is INTENSE! We immediately noticed when we arrived that almost everyone we saw was sunburned, and most beach resorts we've ever stayed at offer sunscreen at the pool and beach areas since it's become more common for resorts to prefer that you use whatever sunscreen their local government has required for their reef protection. We ended up spending almost $60 on a bottle of spray and a tube of lotion in the gift shop. The second thing they could do is provide more options for mixers in the mini bars in the rooms. Our room came with vodka, gin, tequila and scotch taps, but very little options to mix them with in the fridge and there wasn't a way to purchase juice or other mixers to take back to your room to make your own cocktails. It would also be great if they offered a bit more drink options at the included buffet main restaurant, and if they offered snacks at the pool (again another thing most beach resorts offer). The pool bar only does drinks and nothing else. The staff we interacted with were all very friendly and on top of their service! OH...ANOTHER BIG TIP...THERE IS NO WAY TO GET MONEY AT THE RESORT!!! So, if you want to leave an extra tip for any of the staff, make sure to bring cash! Read less

it is beautiful island , a lot of palm trees, interesting birds, lizards, bats, colorful fish and amazing color of water plus friendly people working there - this is the best thing . food is interesting because it is different to other locations, a lot of curries and noodles for breakfast is something I will remember. problem is that it is soo hot and is hard to enjoy food without air conditioning. there is a lot of waste with food because restaurants are open too short, 7.30-10 and 13-15 is not enough , I have seen people late for meal and reversed back to sports bar where is nothing to eat really with large amounts of food left in restaurant put in a bin shotly after it close. I dont know why they dont put some samosas or spring rolls in sportbar at least. there are some specialty restaurants like Italian and meat , in both restaurants only steak is good, lasagne is made with no herbs and spices in sauce with poor quality cheese also there is no music in restaurants to create nice atmosphere. alcoholl is ok but if you like beer then your Carlsberg in mini fridge is your best asset, then you need to check beer locations, it taste different in pool bar pool side and different in pool bar front side or in sport bar, beer in pool bar pool side taste was dark and artificial . it took me few days to find out the best plan of action is to get beer into my travel beaker before getting to pool and then refill in sports bar or put Carlsberg from the can. swiming pool is full of children 1-8 years old splashing water everywhere even to your drinks, stuff was trying to show parents to move them from the bar but it is hard work with so many children. music is boring unless there is aqua fit then it is getting better until they switch it off for boring bingo game with someone shouting numbers for 1 hour. white party , I was lucky to enjoy one party inside it was great but the another time when it was outside majority people on dance floor was children. I understand it is not adults only place but I have seen children 1years old to 5 years old after 10pm , 11pm etc it put me off and I cannot enjoy party in a kindergarten , there should be time for adults only internet. internet is ok for people checking messages or facebook , but if someone is business and need to use VPN then it is the best to use it while everyone is sleeping -early morning. there is not enough internet for everyone, forget using youtube or firesticks. they tried to hide fact that there is not enough internet by saying it is because of weather but the only time it gets better is when everyone is sleeping tv. tv is not smart and there are no radio or music channels. location of room is also important , we are lucky we were able to move closer to pool but it can take 20 minutes from far villas. people. people are extremely friendly except one lady in reception which told us to delete VPN when we were looking to do some work on laptop and had poor internet performance, it was good to ask for manager who helped us by calling IT engineer. I am also glad that hotel helped us on last day so we were able to leave hotel 9 am instead of 6 am . I really appreciated this. We were able to be just on time for 13:20 flight.also on arrival Riu helped us with everything so it was nice and with no stress on airport. This hotel is not for me as it is the best for families with many many children but because people were so kind and helpful and there is beautiful nature I decided to give 4/5. Read less

Wow, don’t like to post a bad review but feel that people should be aware of what Rui and TUI fail to tell you all when booking. Booked via Tui, no issues until arrived at airport in Malé, rep just handed us off to RIU rep, no explanation just ‘go here’. Herded to a waiting area where we sat for 1.5hrs with no information. Then advised we needed to go back to airport for domestic flight to island, Hmmm, no sign of a Tui rep, and once checked in found ourselves in an airport gate for another 1.5hrs. Not great after such a long original flight. Now for our return. We have been advised that our last luggage needs to be ready by 03:45 and we need to be in reception by 05:00, this is for a flight home at 13:20!! I travel frequently, to many times zones, and enjoying many cultures, with many companies, but this experience is shocking to say the least. As a resort it’s been great, in fact exceptional, but the organisation behind the scenes, and the impact this has had on so many needs to be called out. RIU and TUi certainly need to up their game and would not recommend either company to offer a holiday to remember Read less

Arrived at Riu Atoll / Riu Palace after a 10 & a half hour flight from London, a 45 minute domestic flight to a neighbouring island followed by a 15 minute speedboat transfer with all transfers from Male airport (the Pause Lounge was included for food & drinks at Male airport) handled superbly by Riu staff. After disembarjing at the pier, we were welcomed with a drink at reception, quickly dispatched to our room (having already completed the Riu check-in digitally a day before) & luggage arrived within minutes. Our room was in Villa 11, a block of around 12 rooms overlooking the beach just a 5 minute walk away from the swimming pool. It was spacious with a balcony, a large LG TV, a sofa, a safe, tea & coffee facilities, bottles of water, a stocked fridge (as part of the all inclusive package), large twin beds a large walk in shower & twin sinks. The buffet restaurant is used for all 3 meals & there was a large variety of food to suit all tastes. The semi a la carte Sofia Italian restaurant is situated next to the buffet restaurant & the Steak House restaurant is situated next to the pool & both can be booked via the Riu App. The Atoll island itself can be walked around in about 30 minutes. Beaches are clean, white & sandy with deep turquoise waters & shallow to a fair distance out where waves are kept at bay by the coral reef. We saw baby black tip sharks & plenty of fish every day of our stay, the odd stingray could be seen on other days. There were plenty of sunbeds available around the island. The swimming pool has a swim up bar, sunbeds & a towel station but it never felt overcrowded compared to other hotels. There were gala evenings on Christmas Eve & New Years Eve that had to be booked in 1 of 2 sittings (6.30 and 8.30) by the buffet restaurant but the variety of food was excellent. The weather December 22nd to New year's day was a mixture of mainly sunshine with fluffy white clouds, temperatures of early thirties & only one afternoon without any sunshine & two 10 to 15 minute downpours, certainly no thunderstorms and heavy rain that both the BBC and Met Office websites had forecast. There is a gym & spa, there are plenty of water sport activities such as canoeing, paddle boarding, pedaloes, jet skis and excursions to watch dolphins or scuba & snorkelling trips run by the island's ScubaCaribe. The entertainment team provide daytime activities for all ages such as paddle board yoga, water aerobics, water polo, volleyball, boules, afternoon bingo etc etc. There was entertainment every night which was conducted on an outdoor stage and an indoor stage, consisting of children's Riuland entertainment followed by either Karaoke or a quiz (entered via mobile phones) or a live bands & these were usually followed by a DJ. On 3 nights the entertainment was the resident band who were excellent, playing music for all generations. There were also a white party & a world party night for those more energetic. There is also a 24/7 sports bar but seating outside was always occupied from late afternoon / early evening. What makes the Riu so special however are it's staff who are all so attentive & friendly & go above & beyond. When departing the Riu we booked a sea plane (160 USD each) to significantly cut down on the transfer back to Male airport which was a godsend after the New Years eve gala. Read less
