The hotel

Niyama’s twin islands offer up the luxury of choice, from chic serenity on the isle of Chill to the adrenaline and excitement on the isle of Play — or a combination of both as your mood dictates! The resort serves up one of the best dining scenes in the Maldives with no less than seven restaurants, including four unique options: Nest is a one-of-a-kind dining concept in the Maldives featuring four cuisines of Asia, including Teppanyaki, Thai, Chinese and Indonesian; Tribal offers a uniquely authentic cultural experience of African, Central and South American tribal cuisines; Edge provides exclusive overwater dining, accessible by boat, featuring delicate Indian Ocean flavours and fresh local seafood; and, below Edge, Subsix Underwater Playground is hidden out in the ocean and six metres below the waterline. There are also two all-day dining restaurants, two bars, a coffee shop and personalised destination dining options, both on and off shore. If you have little ones, the Explorers Children’s Club pioneers excitement to new levels, with activities for different age groups and interests. An outdoor fun area has a playground, trampoline, splash park and stage, whilst Munch, the mini gourmet kitchen, offers cooking classes and food and drinks for their different tastes. Throughout the resort, family-spirited accommodation, dining and experiences abound — sophistication meets exploration, with extra special attention lavished on VIPs both large and small. Take time to soak up the raw beauty of the unspoilt beaches and blue lagoon, revel in spectacular Ocean views from your luxurious studio, suite or pavilion, explore the islands by bike, and treat yourself to a recharge at LIME Spa, featuring eight iconic treatment rooms and world-renowned products, including Gentlemen’s Tonic and Intraceuticals. The resort was absolutely beautiful and welcoming. During our entire stay, we were assisted by Zaid and Amir, who were incredibly helpful and kind. The rooms were nice, but we faced a few issues. The fan and power outlet weren’t working properly, and the right-side switches didn’t function. I reported it, and I believe they fixed it the next day, but the issue returned so I ended up leaving it as is. One major downside was the bathroom design in our room and the room of my companions — it was open-air with only a surrounding privacy wall. While the idea might seem nice, it was actually very inconvenient during rainy weather, as it attracted many insects and mosquitoes. Most of my bites came from the bathroom area. I understand the resort’s attempt to create a natural experience, but maybe using glass walls while keeping the outdoor shower area with a door would be better. This would still allow natural sunlight in while maintaining hygiene and comfort. The service overall was outstanding — from the restaurants to all other areas — and the food quality was exceptional. They have some of the best chefs from various countries. The African steakhouse was unforgettable — especially the Wagyu steak and black rice. Also, the tree-top restaurant was a fantastic experience, with the chef giving us a stunning cooking show. It was one of the best. Dining at the Blu restaurant was also a highlight — everything from the grilled dishes to the chicken pizza and risotto was incredible. The restaurant next to the gym served the best salads and sandwiches I had at the resort. When it comes to food, the resort was on another level. As for getting around the island, bikes are available, but mine broke down once on my way to Blu restaurant. Unfortunately, internet access is limited throughout the island, probably to encourage guests to disconnect — but in that moment, it was a problem. I had to walk to Blu to get Wi-Fi and message Zaid to send someone. Thankfully, someone came and fixed the bike within five minutes. Next to Blu restaurant, there’s a spot to borrow snorkeling gear and go explore spots like The Blue Hole — which was absolutely breathtaking. There were many beautiful places to snorkel. I also tried kayaking and paddle boarding, which were super fun. Unfortunately, they didn’t have the Seabob available during my stay as it was under maintenance. There are plenty of great activities to do, and I believe the resort is very family-friendly. I saw some bikes with child seats, which would make for a lovely parent-child experience around the island. The spa was also amazing. Each guest gets a private room by the sea, and before the massage, you’re given a tablet to fill in your preferences — areas to focus on or avoid, massage type, etc. The best part of the experience was the sound of the ocean waves during the session — so peaceful and relaxing. Every single staff member was warm, welcoming, and had a cheerful attitude. Would I return? Possibly — especially if they improve the bathroom design and Wi-Fi access, which are essentials for me. But the hospitality and the incredible food are what would definitely make me want to come back. Read less

From arriving at Male airport the seaplane transfer was very smooth, being greeted at arrivals and taken by bus to the seaplane terminal. Niyama have a very nice lounge where you can freshen up and help yourself to drinks and snacks while you wait. The seaplane ride to the island was lovely and gave us the opportunity to see the islands. Upon arrival we were greeted by our amazing host Gia who couldn’t do enough for us. We had a tour of the island on the buggy whilst we enjoyed a refreshing drink. Our beachfront family villa was amazing, exactly like the pictures. Gia made all our reservations for us for the duration of our stay, we ate at a different restaurant every evening. The food was fantastic, can happily recommend them all. We ate lunch at either Blue or Dune both have extensive menu’s. All of the staff were amazing, I don’t think we’ve ever experienced such friendly and happy people where nothing is too much trouble. We visited the spa several times and can definitely recommend the treatments. On our last evening Gia surprised us with drinks and snacks on the beach where we watched a beautiful sunset. Would love to return one day. Read less

Our family, consisting of a 6 & 8 year old boys, my husband and I, recently returned from a trip at Niyama at the end of June – early July. It was a bucket list trip that exceeded our expectations. We split time between beach villa and overwater bungalow, and I’m so happy we did. We spent the half of the trip in a beach bungalow with the pool, which was magical. The boys enjoyed running from the ocean to the pool, and building sandcastles in their backyard. The design of the villa was incredible; the outdoor bathroom was a showstopper. Everything you can imagine was supplied in the room (silk robes, rain coats and umbrellas, kites and hats for the kids, adapters, toiletries). Midway through our stay, we then moved to an overwater pavilion (after some waffling we decided to take advantage of the offer to upgrade from the planned overwater villa to the pavilion for an additional supplement). While I didn’t think our stay could get any more magical, it did! The pavilion consisted of an entry way, living space, separate bedroom, bathroom, and incredibly spacious outdoor deck/pool/jet tub. It was beautifully appointed and still had an outdoor shower with a rain shower (I found it delightful to look down at the water below, especially as the sun was setting and reflecting off the calm ripples of the water). Impeccable accommodations aside, the grounds were also beautiful. It is a beautifully appointed resort with something for everyone to enjoy. We loved being able to bike from end to end through the bright green jungle, and then sit on the pristine beach or swim in the beautiful water. We took advantage of the offerings on the island, including the dolphin tour, snorkel equipment, playing badminton, watching the surfers, SUP and kayaks, the gym (which has great equipment), and also got massages, went for a dive and had a tubing session (the latter three for an extra supplement). Our youngest also did the paint lesson with the resident artist who was awesome with him. My son brought a coconut from the surf point to paint--the resident artist spent about an hour and a half with him, helping my son to paint a beach scene on it that rivaled a processional. The resident artist was patient and so warm with him. The level of service was also unrivaled. Our butler Ammi was responsive and went above and beyond. The level of personalized service and attention to detail was incredible. We were often greeted by name at restaurants, and the staff took a genuine interest in us. We also enjoyed learning about the staff, their different countries of origin and their cultures. The food was also very good. While there was some cross over between the menus, where the restaurants really shined was when the chefs from the different countries did what they do best—in particular, the Indian and African chefs made incredible dishes from their home countries. The curries were so incredible. We also tried Subsix, Nest and Tribal, all had such impeccable décor. We did the sunset at Edge. They also do a glow DJ Party at Subsix the night of the sunset at Edge, it looked super fun (though we did not attend). The boys also loved the offerings at the kids club. They have daily excursions in the club, and the boys loved all of them—in addition to the age appropriate expansive grounds of the kids club itself. They actually preferred spending time there than with us. We flew in on the sea plane and due to flight changes, we flew out on the domestic flight from the nearby airport. Both offered lounge access while we waited, which was a superb touch. I would highly recommend Niyama and hope to one day return! It was a bucket list adventure well worth every second of travel time to get there from the US. Read less
