This was our third trip to the Maldives, and this time we visited three resorts — Heritance Aarah, Ozen Reserve Bolifushi, and Joali BEING. As a family of four with two boys aged 9 and 11, we found Ozen Reserve to be a resort of genuinely high quality that lived up to its reputation.
Service & Staff
We would like to extend our warmest thanks to Marzhan, whose thoughtful and attentive service made us feel truly looked after from start to finish. Equal appreciation goes to Roger, Reeman, and Siyam at the main restaurant Vista del Mar, and especially to Manager Ali Anwar, whose genuine care and personal touches made a real difference throughout our stay.
Three small moments stood out and perfectly captured the spirit of service here. On our very first day at lunch, when I went to pick up an octopus sushi roll, the sushi chef enthusiastically helped me select several kinds of sashimi and rolls, then personally delivered them to our table. On another occasion, Reeman surprised us by bringing out a coconut ice cream that wasn't on the buffet menu — a completely unprompted and delightful gesture. And perhaps most impressive of all: during a casual conversation at the French restaurant, I mentioned a wine I had enjoyed there to Roger. That same evening, he arranged for the exact same bottle to be sent to our table at the Chinese restaurant where we were dining. These are the kinds of details that turn a good stay into an unforgettable one.
Dining
With five restaurants on offer, there was always something to suit different moods and appetites. The main bar also served snacks and drinks throughout the day, which the boys appreciated enormously.
Our clear favourite was Vista del Mar. The breakfast and lunch spreads were generous and varied — we returned again and again. We unfortunately didn't manage to try Vista for dinner, which remains our only regret. A particular highlight was the Chinese kitchen, which impressed us more than we expected. One day they prepared Huí Guō Ròu (twice-cooked pork) — a classic Sichuan dish that felt like a genuine home-cooked meal and was a huge hit with our whole family.
We also had dinner at Origine, the French restaurant, one evening. The team arranged a wonderful outdoor table right by the water — beautifully set and perfectly positioned. We chose the wine pairing menu, and the selected wines were well-matched and memorable. Our server Cherry was attentive and warm throughout the meal. The wine cellar display inside the restaurant is also a visual highlight worth seeking out. Having lived in Portugal for many years, we are accustomed to long outdoor summer dinners, but what made this one special was the timing — we caught the sunset right from our table, and as the sky darkened, the stars came out in full. A truly magical evening.
The Chinese, Indian, and Arabic restaurants were each solid in their own right, each with their own character and strengths.
Drinks & Minibar
The in-room minibar offered a reasonable selection, including snacks and nuts, and the team was responsive in restocking and adjusting it to our preferences.
Environment & Snorkelling
The water was beautifully clear. The area around the spa had a particularly rich marine ecosystem, making it an excellent spot for snorkelling.
Wellness
The gym is located over the water, which is a lovely touch. It was well-equipped and staffed by knowledgeable professionals who were always on hand to assist. Group fitness classes were also available. We received a complimentary 50-minute couples' spa treatment, which was a very welcome gift.
Kids & Family
The Kids Club was spacious and well-run. The staff were patient, warm, and clearly at ease with children — our boys felt comfortable immediately.
Areas for Improvement
In the spirit of constructive feedback, we feel the following points are worth highlighting for the team:
The airport lounge felt quite small given the volume of guests arriving on the same day. With high occupancy, there was little room to sit and relax comfortably. Increasing the frequency of speedboat transfers would help ease congestion significantly.
On the day of our arrival, we were told that no bicycles were available and that we would need to wait until the following day. For a resort of this calibre, this was an unexpected inconvenience.
The beach in front of our villa could benefit from more regular cleaning. The sand itself is incredibly soft and white, but we occasionally noticed floating debris and plastic bottles in the water — something that detracts from an otherwise pristine environment.
The main bar staff could be more proactive in approaching guests. On several occasions we felt the service was reactive rather than attentive, which stood in contrast to the excellent standards we experienced elsewhere on the resort.
Overall
Ozen Reserve Bolifushi is a resort that successfully caters to the varied needs of a family without constantly requiring extra expenditure. The quality of food, the genuine warmth of the staff, and the beautiful natural setting combine to create a well-rounded and satisfying experience. The small moments of unexpected kindness from the team are what we will remember most.
