A Honeymoon That Fell Far Short of the Promises – Disappointing Experience
We chose Sun Siyam Iru Veli for our honeymoon because we wanted this to be a truly special and memorable experience. We were not expecting perfection, but we were expecting the level of service, attention to detail, and hospitality that you would reasonably associate with a luxury resort in the Maldives — especially when the resort makes specific promises to honeymoon guests.
Unfortunately, our experience was very disappointing, mainly because several things that were explicitly promised to us were simply not delivered.
Before our arrival, we were told that we would receive several honeymoon-related gestures: a fruit basket upon arrival, a romantic room and bed arrangement, a romantic dinner, and an anniversary cake. These were not vague expectations that we invented ourselves. They were things that had been communicated to us as part of our honeymoon experience.
And yet, when we arrived, none of these things were provided.
There was no fruit basket waiting for us. There was no special honeymoon room or bed arrangement. There was no romantic dinner. There was no anniversary cake.
What made the situation even more disappointing was the explanation we eventually received: apparently, we were supposed to tell the staff when we wanted these things and when we wanted to celebrate.
This is particularly strange to us because the whole point of such honeymoon arrangements is supposed to be the element of surprise and thoughtful hospitality. If a resort tells honeymoon guests that there will be a special room arrangement, a cake, a romantic dinner, or other gestures, the guest should not have to repeatedly chase the staff and tell them when to surprise them.
In any case, we did communicate our wishes. We specifically told the resort that we wanted to have our romantic dinner at Trio Restaurant. Even after giving them this information, when we actually went to Trio Restaurant, the promised romantic arrangement was still not there.
At that point, it stopped feeling like a simple misunderstanding and started feeling like a complete lack of attention to detail.
For a honeymoon, these details matter. They may seem small from the perspective of a resort, but for a couple who has chosen the Maldives for such an important occasion, they are precisely the details that create the memories.
We also had a major issue with the resort's "all-inclusive" concept.
For us, all-inclusive means that when we order something that is reasonably expected to be included in the package, we should not suddenly be presented with an additional charge. During our stay, I wanted a pineapple juice, and I was told that I had to pay extra for it.
This was extremely disappointing and, frankly, confusing.
If a resort markets an all-inclusive package, guests should be given a very clear explanation from the beginning of exactly what is and is not included. Otherwise, the term "all-inclusive" creates expectations that the resort itself does not fulfill.
One of the main reasons people choose an all-inclusive package is precisely because they want convenience: they don't want to constantly think about prices, additional charges, carrying cash, or making small payments throughout their holiday. That is especially relevant when travelling internationally and staying on a remote island, where guests reasonably expect the resort package to provide a seamless experience.
Having to stop and wonder whether a basic drink is included or whether it will suddenly appear as an extra charge completely undermines that experience.
And this becomes even more frustrating when you consider the overall positioning and price level of the resort. We chose a luxury Maldivian resort because we expected a certain standard of service. At this level, the difference between an average holiday and an exceptional holiday is often not the location — the Maldives are beautiful almost everywhere — but the service, attention to detail, communication, and willingness to make guests feel genuinely cared for.
Unfortunately, this was where we felt the resort fell short.
Another disappointing moment came at the end of our stay.
When it was time for us to leave and head towards the Living Lounge for our seaplane back to Malé, our butler was the only butler who was not there with us.
After everything that had already happened during our honeymoon, this felt like a particularly poor way to end the stay. A butler is supposed to be the person who accompanies and assists guests throughout their experience, especially during arrival and departure. Seeing other guests being accompanied while our own butler was absent made us feel that we simply did not receive the same level of attention.
Again, individually, someone might say that these are "small things." But that misses the point.
A luxury experience is made up of small things.
The fruit basket is a small thing. The bed arrangement is a small thing. The cake is a small thing. The romantic dinner setup is a small thing. A glass of juice is a small thing. Having your butler there when you leave is a small thing.
But when all of those small things go wrong, they stop being small.
They become a pattern.
And that pattern was particularly disappointing because this was our honeymoon. We were not travelling to the Maldives for an ordinary weekend getaway. This was a once-in-a-lifetime occasion, and we had chosen the resort expecting that the team would understand how important this trip was to us.
Instead, we often felt that we had to ask for things that should have been proactively handled, remind staff about things that had already been communicated, and accept additional charges despite having booked an all-inclusive package.
The Maldives themselves are extraordinary. The setting, the ocean, the beaches and the natural beauty are difficult to beat. But a beautiful location cannot compensate indefinitely for disappointing service.
For a resort of this size, reputation and luxury positioning, we expected much more. We expected better internal communication between departments. We expected promises made to honeymoon guests to actually be followed through. We expected the meaning of "all-inclusive" to be much clearer and more consistent. Most importantly, we expected to feel that our honeymoon was important to the resort.
Unfortunately, we did not feel that way.
I am writing this review not because we expected to be treated like royalty, but because the resort itself set certain expectations and then failed to meet them.
If these honeymoon benefits had never been mentioned, our expectations would have been different. If the package had clearly stated that certain drinks or services were not included, we would have known what we were paying for. If we had simply been told that these arrangements were available upon request, we could have planned accordingly.
But that is not what happened.
We were given expectations, and then those expectations were not fulfilled.
For anyone considering this resort for a honeymoon or another major celebration, I would strongly recommend confirming in writing exactly what is included in the package and exactly which honeymoon benefits will actually be provided, when they will be provided, and whether guests need to request them in advance. Do not assume that something described as a honeymoon benefit will automatically happen.
Our biggest disappointment is that this could have been such a beautiful experience. We were in the Maldives, celebrating our honeymoon, surrounded by an incredible natural setting. The resort had every opportunity to make us feel special.
Instead, we left with the feeling that the experience did not match the promises, the price, or the luxury standard we expected.
Beautiful destination, but unfortunately a honeymoon experience that did not live up to what was promised.
