My wife, Missy, and I recently celebrated our 21st wedding anniversary at W Maldives, and I can confidently say it was the most extraordinary resort experience we have ever had!
I spend more than 200 nights a year in hotels for business and travel extensively for pleasure. I’ve stayed everywhere from standard business hotels to beautiful luxury resorts, so I don’t make this statement lightly: We have never experienced this level of personalized service, genuine hospitality, attention to detail, and overall excellence anywhere!
What made W Maldives so extraordinary wasn’t simply the breathtaking turquoise water, spectacular overwater bungalow, pristine beaches, incredible restaurants, or beautiful surroundings.
It was the PEOPLE!
An Experience That Began Four Months Before We Arrived
Because we were celebrating 21 years of marriage, I wanted this vacation to be unforgettable. I began communicating with W Maldives approximately four months before our arrival, asking countless questions about virtually every aspect of our stay.
Despite the significant time difference, their team consistently responded promptly, patiently, and thoroughly. Never once did they make me feel like I was asking too much.
When we finally arrived, it felt as though the employees already knew us! They greeted us by name, remembered our preferences, and anticipated our needs before we even asked.
Nothing felt scripted or forced. The hospitality was genuinely extraordinary.
A Beautiful Resort With Unbelievable Privacy
We were incredibly grateful for a gracious upgrade to a Premier Overwater Bungalow, which was absolutely spectacular!
The entire property, including the restaurants, beaches, pool, landscaping, and walkways, was immaculately maintained.
Despite other guests being on the island, we frequently felt as though we had the entire resort to ourselves. We never felt crowded, rushed, or like just another room number.
The Incredible People Who Made Our Anniversary Unforgettable
I sincerely hope both future travelers and Marriott leadership recognize these exceptional individuals. They are what truly separates W Maldives from other luxury resorts.
Silva, Lakshan, and Henry — WET Deck & SIP: We affectionately called these three the “Dream Team!” They quickly learned our preferences and regularly created amazing drinks that weren’t even on the menu. Henry’s contagious smile and personality, combined with Silva’s and Lakshan’s exceptional hospitality, made every visit memorable. We especially enjoyed the conversations, laughter, and learning about their cultures and families.
“Aquaman” — FISH: His passion for marine life and knowledge of the ocean were incredible! He also helped arrange an unforgettable seven-course dinner for our actual anniversary celebration at FISH. The food, atmosphere, service, and personalized touches created an evening we will cherish forever.
Shane — Assistant Director: Shane deserves tremendous recognition for his leadership and genuine concern for guests. My wife has gluten-free dietary requirements, and he went above and beyond to ensure she had wonderful dining options throughout our stay. He even explained that if the resort didn’t have something she needed, they would arrange transportation to Malé to obtain it! He continually checked on us and made sure everything was perfect.
Manoj — Pastry Chef: We jokingly told Manoj we were trying to figure out how to fit him into our suitcase and bring him home! His creations were phenomenal, especially the special gluten-free desserts he personalized for Missy. He remembered her preferences and regularly surprised her with delicious creations that weren’t even on the menu.
Wasantha — Chef Manager, KITCHEN: From our first day, Wasantha personally took an interest in Missy’s dietary requirements. He consistently checked on us, prepared special items, including wonderful mango smoothies, and made sure we had everything we could possibly want.
KYI — Housekeeping: KYI was absolutely incredible! Our bungalow was beautifully maintained twice daily, and she quickly learned our preferences for water and coffee. When she discovered Missy was getting cold because I like keeping our room freezing, she went out of her way after her shift to bring an extra blanket. She also decorated our bungalow beautifully for our anniversary and prepared a romantic bubble bath with flowers. Those thoughtful gestures meant so much to us!
Ai Hamm — Our Host: Ai Hamm made our entire stay seamless, coordinating dinner reservations, keeping us informed about resort activities, and arranging a late checkout that saved us from spending eight unnecessary hours at the airport. We loved learning about his family, culture, and passion for astronomy. He even gave us meaningful handmade gifts that we will cherish forever.
Diyla, Ara, Arsham, and Adam — KITCHEN & SIP: These wonderful individuals made our mornings something we genuinely looked forward to! They remembered our names, knew exactly how we liked our coffee and chai, and frequently had everything prepared before we sat down. Arsham remembered Missy’s love for watermelon mimosas and fresh mango. We also nicknamed him our “Smell-Good Guy” because he always smelled amazing! Their smiles, warmth, and attention to detail made every interaction special.
Looth — KITCHEN & FIRE: Looth consistently provided wonderful service with his friendly personality and genuine hospitality, contributing to our exceptional dining experiences.
Audi — Director: The consistently outstanding service throughout the property speaks volumes about Audi’s leadership and the culture he has helped create. It was obvious that the employees genuinely enjoyed their work, and that enthusiasm carried over into every interaction with guests.
Cindi — Arrival & Departure: After approximately 36 hours of traveling, Cindi’s warm welcome and assistance made our arrival effortless. She coordinated our seaplane transfer and ensured everything went smoothly. She was equally wonderful when we departed. We also want to recognize an additional gentleman whose name we unfortunately never learned. He personally assisted us through the seaplane lounge, airport transfers, and international departure process. His kindness and attention were greatly appreciated!
An Experience That Redefined Luxury Hospitality
What impressed us most was how consistently extraordinary the service was across every department.
Whether we were enjoying breakfast, relaxing by the pool, dining at FISH, returning to our bungalow, or simply walking around the island, someone was always greeting us with a genuine smile and making us feel special.
For anyone traveling with dietary restrictions, I cannot emphasize enough how exceptional this resort was in accommodating my wife’s gluten-free needs. She never felt limited in what she could enjoy, and the culinary team continually went above and beyond.
We also want to recognize the countless employees behind the scenes whose names we never learned. An experience this exceptional requires an entire team working together.
Would We Return? Without Hesitation!
We have traveled extensively and enjoyed many wonderful vacations, but W Maldives has set a standard that will be incredibly difficult for any other resort to match.
Our friends and family have already been asking about our experience after seeing our photos and hearing our stories, and we cannot stop talking about this remarkable property and its people.
In fact, we’re already looking at dates to return!
To anyone considering W Maldives for a honeymoon, anniversary, romantic getaway, or simply an extraordinary vacation, I cannot recommend this resort highly enough.
