The hotel

With a stunning sunset location, flanked by UNESCO World Heritage Site Le Morne Peak, this LUX* resort also overlooks an endless stretch of golden beach. Sheltered from trade winds and on the quiet side of the island, it’s an ideal place to catch up on some R&R. Landscaped gardens surround you, dotted with five swimming pools — select your favourite and pull up a lounger. Romantic in feel, the hotel is also ideal for families, with a superb kids' club offering activities such as treasure hunts, art classes and tennis lessons. Water sports abound, try your hand at snorkelling, water-skiing or kite-surfing perhaps. If you prefer dry land, no worries — team up with friends for a game of volleyball or hire a bike to explore the lush interior. Come sundown, the pace picks up slightly. Head to The Bar for cocktails and live music, or while away the hours in East, feasting on delicious Thai cuisine. Set right beside the ocean, The Beach is also highly recommended, serving up Italian fare in a relaxed setting.

We want to especially thank Manie and Bianca from the celebration team for their empathetic and positive way to treat the guests. It was so lovely to meet both of you. If you plan your wedding or honeymoon at Lux, both of them will be taking excellent care of you. We would also like to mention Rhakee, who was taking care of the housekeeping in our suite. She did such a great job. Read less

The spa was wonderful and there is amazing snorkelling from the beach with a fantastic range of coral and fish. On one day also a squadron of squid! A special thanks to Dylan who made our last day at the beach very special with flowers and coconuts! Restaurants have delicious food and an excellent range of different things. The ice-cream is amazing and home made. Tips: take wet shoes and a snorkel. The sea urchins have very long spines and the coral sand is a bit spiky. You can borrow snorkels at the resort. Read less

Pros: Beautiful resort on a long stretch of beach - note the beach isn’t technically private but this wasn’t really an issue. Lots of comfortable sun loungers, multiple swimming pools, a pretty good gym, comfortable beds. Very well kept grounds with many palm trees etc. The buffet breakfast was great with a lot of variety. We went on a private dolphin viewing/swimming trip organised through the hotel, which takes you out on a 2h trip to Tamarind bay - was a wonderful experience! We saw a number of private dinners/meals being organised as well - looks like they are well experienced in arranging ‘experience dinners’ eg for honeymooners or proposals. The area is fairly isolated with not a whole lot around except other resorts and golf clubs. It is close to the Black River Gorges national park however which can make for a good day trip for sight seeing. We had minor issues in our room like the kettle not working, but they sent staff immediately to resolve the issue which was great. There is a casual bar/cafe area where in the evening there is often live music entertainment, and can serve as a nice shelter on rainy days! There are a number of board and card games there to loan for free. They have really lovely courtesy rooms which have a shower/bathroom/changing area, which was perfect for us to freshen up after checking out in the morning but before our nighttime flight. ------------------- Cons: The hotel has set up an initiative called TropiCat which essentially is a ‘solution’ to having too many stray cats roaming the hotel grounds. There is a small enclosure to the side of the hotel where 7 cats are housed at the moment. The cats look like young cats, and they look fairly healthy - but does beg the question of what happens when the cats get older or what happens when capacity is reached. Are these cats being neutered/spayed? This is important to control the stray population in general. I would say the enclosure is small, dark, and lacks enrichment activities that cats require (scratching posts, toys, warm beds etc). There is what appears to be an unused plot of land next to the enclosure which I think tropicat should extend to - some outdoor space where the cats can bask in the sun would be welcomed! Also perhaps the opportunity for guests to play with the cats which will also help to entertain and socialise them, and help to promote adoption if that is truly what the aim of this initiative is. We visited TropiCat a few times during our stay, and most of the cats would meow and come right up to the cage wall when we approached - it was a bit of a heartsink. Because the resort is fairly self contained and there aren’t many options outside for food, the prices at the hotel are steep. We ate at East, a Thai-inspired restaurant on site which was average, but mostly had the dinner buffets. The prices at the spa also were also prohibitively expensive. The WiFi is fairly slow and patchy at some places on the resort - I’ll let you be the judge of whether that is a pro or con! Read less
