The hotel

As synonymous with Boston as the eponymous tea party and cream pie, Hilton Boston Park Plaza has been a landmark on the city’s hotel circuit since it opened 90 years ago. Reinterpreted for the 21st century traveller with a $100 million mega-makeover, it now adds contemporary décor and mod-cons to its timeless elegance. And you’re in good company, with all bar two US Presidents staying here since it opened. It’s easy to see why, with a top-drawer location near Boston Common. Of course, they wouldn’t all have experienced today’s attractions, which include a mammoth 20,000 SF Health Club, the nightly cocktail hour (well 5 hours) in the Library, and the New England inspired dining of its Off the Common restaurant, with Boston’s signature lobster rolls a menu favourite.

We had a wonderful stay and especially enjoyed the hospitality provided by Mamadow. It’s unusual to receive such a personal touch at a corporate hotel.

This is what the website says: "Experience timeless elegance at Hilton Boston Park Plaza, a historic hotel in the heart of downtown Boston." This statement isn't all correct. It is a true, it is a historic hotel in down town Boston. The communal areas have been spruced up and look OK, but the rooms we had were exceptionally tired and very small. Timeless elegence... I think not. There was very limited storage in the rooms. Only a cupboard with a single shelf, no drawers. The bathroom was so tiny with everything over-hanging the toilet (there wasn't room for much else) and so I was constantly concerned that I'd drop my towel or toothbrush in the toilet. We asked to move hotel to the Hilton Back Bay. The receptionist thought our room rate was so low that it may as well have been free and that he'd charge us a lot to move. The room rate was fine, but if I'd know that we were such 2nd class citizens (taking advantage of a low room rate) I would have stayed at the Sheraton, which had a similar room rate. The hotel does screw you by taking an extra $100 per room per night, of which $35 is a non-refundable resort fee, with a $15 credit to spending in the hotel in the desperate hope that you will use the very poor, but still surprisingly busy facilities. I will report back if they don't refund the excess on the day we depart. I could go on, but all in all, set your expectations low. It is an historic hotel in down town Boston. Read less
