The hotel

John Muir Lodge is in an excellent location for exploring Kings Canyon National Park and giant sequoia country. A warm welcome awaits under the lodge's open beamed ceiling and in front of the stone fireplace, ensuring all guests get to feel right at home. Accommodation follows suit and you'll discover recently renovated rooms with hand crafted furniture and local artwork adding to the instant appeal. After a good night's rest there's nothing better than an early start to soak up the sun rising over the sequoias. Picnic supplies can be picked up at the general stores opposite the lodge and once you've packed up the fishing tackle, charged your camera and hit the trail, it's time to discover just what John Muir fell in love with way back when.

Where is it

Located in Kings Canyon National Park. Just a stone's throw from the towering giant sequoias of Grant Grove, a short walk from the village visitor centre and a general store.

Hotel information

36 guest rooms. All with central heating, flat-screen  TV, telephone, mini-fridge, tea/coffee-making facilities, hairdryer, iron and board. Standard Rooms with 2 queen-size beds, sleeping maximum 4 adults.

Deluxe Rooms with 1 king-size bed, sleeping maximum 2 adults.

Grant Grove Restaurant and outdoor espresso bar nearby (breakfast, lunch and dinner). Complimentary WiFi in public areas. Selection of board games. Gift shop, convenience store and visitor centre opposite.

One person must be aged 21 years and over in each room at check-in.

We chose to stay in Grants Grove for one night at the John Muir Lodge, so we could get a head start on the road to Kings Canyon National Park. It was a bit pricey for a one night stay, but convenient to our travel schedule. We never received directions to the lodge and couldn't find it on any of the park maps, but knew where Grants Grove was, so asked for directions at the welcome center. The lodge is nicely located a short distance up the hill from the welcome center in a quiet area. We had a first floor room with 2 queen beds and was pleasantly surprised at how nice it seemed, even though very rustic. We slept comfortably. The room had a cylinder air conditioner of some sort in the corner that allowed us to close the window at night and keep the room at the temperature we wanted. The only issue we had was minor, that the shower head was very low and my tall husband had to duck his head to wash his hair. The lobby of the lodge had nice tables and chairs, microwave, some packaged foods for sale, and coffee makers. There were tons of games (probably 40?) available for use. The staff was very accommodating and pleasant. This was a quiet hotel even though it was completely booked. Because there is only a poor excuse for a restaurant a few blocks away, I would only recommend one night here, which is a shame, because the lodge itself is nice. They need a good restaurant in the village. Read less

The kiosk driven food venue while not great works marginally well elsewhere in the park but at this location I waited an hour for a simple quesadilla and salad. While I didn’t expect much but this was so low I have To say something. The kiosk driven food venue while not great works marginally well elsewhere in the park but at this location I waited an hour for a simple quesadilla and salad. I would never have received it had I not gone up and complained and asked for it. It then arrived quickly although cold as it had clearly just been sitting in the kitchen with no attempt to serve it. I get these folks are underpaid and but do something other than mutter a sorry for the wait! Oh and the place had dirty tables everywhere So I assume they were also totally understaffed Read less

We have been to several National Park lodges and had marginal experiences. This was a pleasant surprise! It was clean, roomy, updated, staffed well. A very happy stay! Even the food at the restaurant was above average. We enjoyed it all. Would recommend staying here for anyone visiting Kings Canyon or Sequoia NPs.

Rooms were good except for mattress that needs replacement. They challenge you to a 5 minute shower no problem water is set so it's barely warm. Quiet room. Great Wifi compared to Yosemite. Beautiful area so would stay again it comings back to Kings. Restaurant and store close by.

Even with piles of snow on the ground and slush on the trails Sequoia Forest is gorgeous and both exhilarating and relaxing. The trees are worth the visit, uou should go see them! And the lodge rooms are comfy and quiet and the food at the restaurant is outstanding.
