The hotel

Escape to the Hyatt Regency Newport Beach — this retreat sits next to the Upper Newport Bay Nature Preserve and is ideal for a bit of walking, cycling or nature viewing. You'll be welcomed by 26-acres of lush landscaping, before the newly renovated lobby and bar area lure you in with a calm, coastal California chic theme. Directly off the Newporter Lounge, is a comfortable patio with a firewall, hanging lights and magnificent views of the bay — and those views carry through to many of the guest rooms. Take your pick from three beautiful outdoor pools: chill at the adults-only 'Indulge' pool and find a restful spot at the 'Serenity' pool, or have fun with the kids at the 'Oasis' pool. Whether your passion is shopping, dining, boating, or performing arts, you’ll find it close by. Hit the beach, take to the water on Newport Bay, or wander the shops at Balboa Island and Fashion Island. Disneyland, the Aquarium of the Pacific and Laguna Beach are just a little further away.

Overall the Hyatt Regency Newport Beach West has nice amenities for families, is very reasonably priced for the area, and is in a great location to access the beautiful beaches in Newport, Corona Del Mar, and Laguna. They have done a nice job updating the lobby, 3 pools, and room furniture. My kids enjoyed the water slide and games near the pools (ping pong, giant Jenga, corn hole, giant chess, plastic axe throwing, etc). We got a great deal on this hotel + rental car through Costco. That said, Hyatt needs to invest in this property to bring it up to par as once you leave the lobby to go to your room it feels more like a Holiday Inn than a Hyatt Regency. The entire property is badly in need of a paint job. The elevator is claustrophobic and feels like a freight in a warehouse. They need to add diffusers or air fresheners to the room hallways as ours smelled like cat pee. The walls are paper thin and I could hear every word spoken by other guests who walked by the the hallway outside our room. The arm chair in our room had multiple stains on it and what looked like a cigarette burn. The self parking lot needs new fencing to feel more secure and better signage for guests to access the lobby after parking. Hyatt needs to get rid of the $40/night parking fee that they charge guests on top of the $50/night resort fee. The quality of the food at the pool bar and casual restaurant are decent but overpriced for what you get (you are much better off driving 5 min to the Fashion Island food court and eating there). We also had multiple issues with the hotel staff during our stay. Our front desk agent wrote the wrong room number on our key card holder which resulted in confusion and wasted time when our key card didn't work when we tried to access the room we were told we were assigned. One day I texted the hotel staff to ask to request morning housekeeping service and got an immediate response and confirmation, only to come back in the afternoon to find that our room had not been cleaned. I texted again asking if housekeeping could come in the next hour, got another immediate response, only to come back again 1.5 hours later and find that our room had still not been cleaned. Our Costco package included daily food and beverage credit but when I saw that it had not been applied at check out, the front desk agent made me wait for over 10 minutes while they manually applied the credit/discount. Exceptional experience staying in the villa suites! I would highly recommend families with young children to stay and play in the private pool area that are offered with the villa experience. Also, the villas are very close to the water slides and larger pool area that offer food service during your stay.

Staff were pleasant, but the cleanliness and upkeep of the public spaces around the guest rooms was very poor. The day following the Concert Series on a Friday night, there were wine and alcohol glasses left out, and vomit outside a guest room that didn't get cleaned up until late the next day. I told my wife I should have taken photos so I could… Read more

The day following the Concert Series on a Friday night, there were wine and alcohol glasses left out, and vomit outside a guest room that didn't get cleaned up until late the next day. I told my wife I should have taken photos so I could have included them in this post. I don't normally post reviews, so didn't think to capture it. Read less
