The hotel

Escape to the Hyatt Regency Newport Beach — this retreat sits next to the Upper Newport Bay Nature Preserve and is ideal for a bit of walking, cycling or nature viewing. You'll be welcomed by 26-acres of lush landscaping, before the newly renovated lobby and bar area lure you in with a calm, coastal California chic theme. Directly off the Newporter Lounge, is a comfortable patio with a firewall, hanging lights and magnificent views of the bay — and those views carry through to many of the guest rooms. Take your pick from three beautiful outdoor pools: chill at the adults-only 'Indulge' pool and find a restful spot at the 'Serenity' pool, or have fun with the kids at the 'Oasis' pool. Whether your passion is shopping, dining, boating, or performing arts, you’ll find it close by. Hit the beach, take to the water on Newport Bay, or wander the shops at Balboa Island and Fashion Island. Disneyland, the Aquarium of the Pacific and Laguna Beach are just a little further away.

This hotel really needs updating in lots of ways - it is past its prime. It needs modernising and investment - the corridors are dark and dated and it seems to be trying to do too many things at once. You can't be an events place but also just expect everyone else staying here who is not involved in the event to be ok with the level of noise the event creates. They also, in my opinion, need to re-think their catering options and price points. It didn't start well. On arrival, after a long international flight, they said that they weren't expecting me until the next day - even though my booking showed the correct date. The conversation at reception was challenging because the bar next door to reception was so noisy we pretty much had to shout over it. The room I was given eventually, although relatively large and with a balcony, smelt damp and mouldy. But the biggest issue was the noise (which I should have guessed was going to be a problem by the fact that there are complimentary earplugs in the room). There are loud flights passing over ever few minutes, no soundproofing of windows or corridors, and very noisy events taking place seemingly every night - some of which were immediately outside the block of rooms where I was staying. Trying to get some sleep ahead of an important meeting was impossible with the loud event / live band and singer outside my balcony room. You also hear every flush of the toilet in the room above, every corridor conversation (of which there seem to be many at all hours) and every door slam. Definitely no peace, quiet or relaxation here from my perspective. The catering offer is also rather strange and very expensive. No fresh fruit or yoghurt or sandwiches in the small "market shop" in reception, just lots of unhealthy processed snacks with no prices on them. Some reasonably healthy (fruit) options in the cafe at breakfast but these options are gone once the cafe turns into a wine bar late morning. The "Shor" menu feels like a rip off - e.g. more than $40 for a salad with some chicken at lunchtime, and $14 for a tiny bowl of unremarkable tepid tomato soup to take away in a cardboard cup in the evening. They obviously have a captive audience with guests who don't have a car. Positives include the good wifi, a coffee maker in the room, and the cheerful housekeeping service who were happy to replace my water and tea bags. However the negatives far outweigh the positives and I would have been frustrated if I had booked to stay here for a break expecting some peace and quiet rather than being here for work. I would say that it's ok if you have a specific purpose to be here, like a wedding or a meeting or an event, but I would really recommend looking elsewhere if you have a choice and aren't attending an event. I would be reluctant to return. Read less

Went to Hyatt Resort in Newport Beach for vacation with family. Staff was amazing. Rooms clean and very nice. Food was great with a lot of selections. The 4th of July BBQ was great with a spectacular view of the fireworks.

The hotel was beautiful and staff was great. Especially the dining. Our servers Ken, Felix, Angel, and Juan were great and made the experience for sure. Very funny and personable. we were also able to catch a great firework show and even view multiple from the bay located behind the hotel.

Hotel was in horrendous condition all around - advertised as a resort with a golf course and great swimming pools, first thing we notice walking out of the lobby towards our room was the strong scent of chlorine. Thought it could be better as we walked to the “golf course,” and any positive notion towards the hotel went down the drain. The idea of the course wasn’t bad, it was the quality of everything about the course that was horrible. Grass on the green was longer than the grass on the fairway. It was literally a joke to call it a golf course. Paid over 1k for 2 nights, expected a lot. Rooms were tiny, dark, the “patio” was literally a sliding door and 1 foot of dirty walking space. Would never recommend anyone to stay at this resort until they redo quite literally everything about it. Read less

Bed and bedding were terrific. Mattress was a perfect firmness. Had the best sleep I'd had in a very long time. The towels were also very nice.
