The hotel

‘The Del’ as the Coronado is known as has been open for business since 1888 and is a designated National Historic Landmark! Indeed, it’s been the backdrop to many a Hollywood movie, including Some Like it Hot starring Marilyn Monroe. The last of California’s stately old seaside hotels, it is a monument to Victorian grandeur with virtually no two rooms alike and a sumptuous wood panelled lobby that has to be seen to be believed. Recent additions include Shore House at The Del, an elevated hotel experience in an extraordinary neighborhood of seaside villas. From an oceanfront pool that blends seamlessly into the horizon, to an inviting living room that flows effortlessly outdoors, Shore House offers an extraordinary sense of place, where family and friends form deep connections in a rare beachside setting. The Del's newest restaurant inside the beautifully restored Laundry building. Dine outside on the lawn and watch the action at the BBQ Pit or gather inside the historic brick building beneath vaulted ceilings and the Laundry's original conveyor system. Pull up a stool at the historic wooden bar from the 1880s for inventive cocktails, beer and wine.

We choose this Hotel as it was a resort, and wanted somewhere where we could rest by the pool for a few days on our 4 week trip around California. We had read the reviews and were feeling a bit reticent about our visit. It is expensive - but cocktails/ wine 22 dollars ish seems to be the norm in this type of resort. If you stay here you have to accept you’ll end up spending money. Nothing is cheap. Having said that, there are fridges in room, and there is a Vons walking distance which we stocked up on Coke / soft drinks / snacks. We had a room in the Cabana building. We were very happy, as it had direct access to the pool. Plenty of sun loungers available around pool. People seemed to move on and not stay all day. Will say I think we are here out of high season and USA schools are back so perhaps that makes a difference. Staff all lovely. Room clean and modern. Plenty of restaurants either in hotel or on road outside of hotel. We ate at veranda and it was expensive but good. Breakfast was included in our booking and I’m glad it was. Equally there is a Starbucks up road and other coffee shops / grab and go place in hotel if you chose to not have breakfast included. We loved it. Felt a bit like turn 5 star hotels you have in Marbella. Public do come in and use restaurants but it didn’t affect our visit. Read less

Tremendously overpriced. Caste system: depending upon where you stay, you are limited to one pool. Mine was overflowing with kids, and I could not access the lap pool. Rooms in The View were typical mid level Hilton at $800/night. No room service, poor food selection. The staff, however, was terrific.

It's always a favorite despite the fact the water is unsafe to swim in. It was a fine trip, but the ocean is off-limits due to sewage. TJ sewage. Bacteria levels are high. No the fault of the hotel, but not good. Next, there is no room service. We were surprised that a hotel of this class does not have room service. Who doesn't like breakfast in bed on vacation? Lastly, they have guys running around with leaf blowers, it's tacky and loud at 730 am. They also have them again on campus around midnight. My asthma does not enjoy breathing in everything from the ground. They also have fire pits with real wood. It was smoky for me, again my asthma was not a fan. Choked me up. I believe a better quality wood wouldn't have caused me irritation. I enjoy fire pits on the beach, but this one at the hotel with such a strong smell that it was unfortunate. The bed was comfortable the room was OK. If it is a decision between Kauai or Coronado go for Kauai. Otherwise, it's ok. Lots of people. Walking on the side walk by the beach was not pleasant. People on motorized bicycles in the crowd. There are signs to walk the bicycles. Not as relaxing as we thought it would be. It was OK, not great. Maybe off season is better? Read less

We’ve been loyal guests of the Hotel del Coronado for decades — visiting at least every other year since our now 37-year-old daughter was a baby. We’ve always loved the property and considered it a special place for our family. Unfortunately, our most recent stay (August 7–11, 2025) was nothing short of a near disaster — and we left wondering what has happened to the standards and hospitality we once knew so well. Frankly, I’m not even sure where to begin: The room we were assigned was extremely cramped, with virtually no desk space — making my bringing a laptop pointless. There was inadequate drawer space and no nightstands or dresser, which made settling in nearly impossible. The pool and hot tub areas were consistently overcrowded, and on multiple days we were unable to access chairs, towels, or even get near the hot tub. We sat at a table on the sundeck only to be told there was a $175 minimum to remain — and had to move. (I’ve included several photos for reference.) Despite requesting housekeeping three separate times in one day, our room was never serviced. We had also specifically requested a room with a bathtub in advance due to some medical needs — but were placed in a room with only a shower. It was disheartening to have these issues compounded throughout the stay, especially at a property we’ve long cherished. We had plenty to talk about on the drive back to Los Angeles — mostly about how dramatically the experience has changed for the worse. We would love to return someday, but only if we can be assured that the Hotel del Coronado is once again living up to Hilton’s standards and reputation. I have been a Hilton American Express cardholder for more than 40 years and a Hilton Honors member since 2016 Read less
