The hotel

You might feel like you’ve boarded a luxury cruise ship as you enter this distinctive boutique hotel, perched on the edge of the bay. The Argonaut’s original red brick walls, rich wood beams and ‘deck floors’ help to transport you back to San Francisco’s nautical heyday. At the same time, the plush décor provides all you need to settle in to your charming surrounds. Until, of course, those views of the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz lure you out to explore all that is Fisherman’s Wharf.

First the good, and there's not much: The hotel is in a great location, it was clean, and the bed was comfortable. My primary complaint is that the hotel charges premium rates and failed to deliver a premium experience in many ways. I paid extra for a bay view and felt cheated. If you stood in the far left corner of the room almost behind the bed you could see a little of the bay - and that’s very different from the “bay view room” photo on the website. There is a $36 per day resort fee, which is supposed to entitle you to a $15 meal credit for hotel dining. What they did not say is that the $15 credit expires every day so you must use it or lose it on a daily basis. The “free in-room coffee” was the cheapest kind of single-serve drip coffee maker that makes coffee not worth the drinking. We wanted to order a room service breakfast for the morning we had to leave, but found that breakfast can’t be ordered until 7 am on the morning you want to have breakfast. That made the timing impractical for even an 8 am departure. The hotel restaurant is supposed to be highly rated, but we found it very ordinary and - yes, overpriced. I don’t mind paying high dollar for a good experience, but this experience was a big disappointment. It did not live up to the hype. Read less

Starting positively, the location is good and it's connected to a National Parks' Museum which is cool for kids/history buff. We stayed one night and the street noise was LOUD. There was a crack in the window of my kids' hotel room that let in smoke from the sidewalk during the night that was "repaired" with what looked like duct tape. Also - if… Read more

There was a crack in the window of my kids' hotel room that let in smoke from the sidewalk during the night that was "repaired" with what looked like duct tape. Also - if you have kids - BEWARE - they put stuffed animals on the beds which look like they are gifts (other, equally expensive hotels do this routinely) but they are not, they must be purchased - and they are not cheap. So that's fun. My teens were young enough to be disappointed but old enough to be offended by what they called a "scam." Read less

Fantastic hotel at the Fisherman’s Warf. Spacious rooms stylised with care for detail in the argonaut theme of the hotel. Friendly staff, eager to help out or give information. Superb locations for visiting SF, bike rental, cable car station and dining places such as Buena vista all just around the corner. Valet parking was overpriced compared to other options - self parking in the designated parking lot with a full size SUV was very difficult as the valets park cars in non-parking spaces too leaving too little room to manoeuvre easily. Outside break-ins are frequent. So be prepared for the extra cost or park elsewhere in the nearby closed lots. We chose this one for its location and requested a room with a view on the Golden Gate bridge. Value-for-money: good Read less
Image of the Tripadvisor rating Rodents

The hotel has rodent infestation. There are big holes in the ceiling that rodents crawl through. With their brick walls, makes it even easier for them to scale. Witnessed a large mouse scaling the wall next to the TV into the ceiling.
