The hotel

You might feel like you’ve boarded a luxury cruise ship as you enter this distinctive boutique hotel, perched on the edge of the bay. The Argonaut’s original red brick walls, rich wood beams and ‘deck floors’ help to transport you back to San Francisco’s nautical heyday. At the same time, the plush décor provides all you need to settle in to your charming surrounds. Until, of course, those views of the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz lure you out to explore all that is Fisherman’s Wharf.

We arrived on a Friday afternoon after our long flight from London. We went to the check-in desk and told the female staff member our name and hat we were checking in for three nights. She looked in the computer and couldn’t find our name. She searched for a couple of minutes and then asked a colleague to help. A,so to no avail. Then another member of staff came from the back (who I think was a manager of some sort) and he too began to help. The lady asked us to go sit for a moment whilst they sorted the problem and asked if we’d like a bottle of water. We duly sat as instructed and then waited. And waited. And waited whilst the three staff members all proceeded to assist other guests at the desk. After half an hour with no response from the staff my husband went back up to the front desk to ask what was going on - they’d not been able to access our booking on the computer but had found our reference on their main server - it hadn’t been uploaded onto the front desk server for some reason. So the manager told us he would “honour” our booking! We had no apology for our inconvenience at all, and were made to feel like it was our fault and that we were somehow eying to con them out of a stay! Eventually we got our room cards and went to settle in. The hotel is in a great location for Fisherman’s Wharf, Pier 39 and the cable car turnaround. Room large and clean and well appointed. We asked for a kettle for tea and they brought one up. The room has a beverage cooler full of minibar items but we just took these out to use it for our own drinks and replaced them upon check-out Read less

The Argonaut is a beautiful hotel. Joanna at the concierge is wonderful and full of useful information to help you with your travels. She is a real gem and the other staff is great too. Parking is pricey but that’s what you get. Great location, lots of history and the Nautical Museum next door is a must see.

Easy walk to all the Piers for the cruises etc. Good sized room though our room was rather dark even with all the lights on and the window open. Didn’t know about the $36 a night ‘service/facility’ charge that is added to your account; something like a resort tax that I thought was outlawed. Also about 10 state and city taxes added daily to your account! Weird when you see the length of the bill on check out! Read less

You can’t get more convenient for Fisherman’s wharf and all that it offers and the hotel provides a good base for exploring all that San Francisco has to offer. Helpful reception team with complimentary water & coffee and a concierge desk for arranging excursions etc. Attached blue mermaid restaurant was OK if you want to dine ‘close to home’. Read less

I was super excited to stay here for our first trip to San Francisco, especially when I saw that they offered rooms with a "bay view." Unfortunately the first (very expensive!) room we got that was supposedly a bay view had no bay view, unless you climbed into the bathtub and stood on your tip toes. There were no other rooms available so the hotel compensated us by giving a refund equivalent to the rate for a non-bay room, which is nice; but it was the whole reason I booked the hotel, so still ultimately disappointing. In fact now that I look back at the hotel photos of their rooms on their website, there is no way that those photos accurately portray any of the rooms' views because of the buildings that are directly across the street. (First world problems, I know, but better to under-promise and over-deliver rather than building high hopes.) Then, we were on the street side where a guy plays music until 11pm at night, AND you could hear the people walking around above you. They were able to move us on the 2nd night of our stay - again which is fair, but meant packing up and starting all over again. Another note is that the bathroom was ENORMOUS and while the toilet had a separate room, the shower (with glass door)/sink were in the same room, which made it hard to get ready in the morning as a family of 4. It was fine but maybe not the most efficient way to use all of that space. To sum up... get a top floor room... at the back of the building away from the noise... and the bay views are a strange name for what they actually are. Read less
