Fairmont San Francisco embodies the grandeur of this historic city. It effortlessly combines impeccable service with luxurious rooms and top-notch facilities. As it’s set high atop Nob Hill, you’ll enjoy great city views and can practically hop on the cable cars from outside the hotel. When it comes to eating, you’ll find some delicious local food at the hotel’s three restaurants. Why not treat yourself to traditional afternoon tea at the weekend or visit The Tonga Room & Hurricane Bar for, apparently, the best Mai Tai in the city.

Beware hidden charges! I was looking forward to my stay at the San Francisco Fairmont but unfortunately my experience did not live up to the expectations of a luxury hotel chain. While the hotel is indeed beautiful and in a great location, it lacked the feel of a luxury hotel. Upon checking in, I asked for an upgrade and was informed that I would be charged a set cost for the entire stay. When I checked out, I was alarmed to see the hidden fees, taxes etc that exponentially increased the bill. For example, I was charged separate tourism and occupancy taxes for the room and additional taxes on the room upgrade (which was x3 what I was quoted). How insane! The professional services and dining were also lacking finesse. The restaurant and bar staff seemed to struggle with catering to 3-4 tables and the quality of the food was below average. Finally, when we checked out the hotel valet didn’t even bother to help us with our suitcases. We had to do it ourselves. Overall the hotel is beautiful (although dated) and in a wonderful location. However, travelers need to be aware that this is not your typical luxury hotel. Very disappointing. I don’t think I will be staying here again.

Overpriced garbage
Aug 22, 2025Frank HReston, Virginia
What an overpriced dump. This used to be a nice hotel, but it's literally just trash coasting on a brand now. The whole place is moldy, musty and poorly maintained. Elevators break, the ceiling is falling in at places, the staff is a bunch of weird people wearing masks. It's few short blocks from the tenderloin where you can see the open drug…

Elevators break, the ceiling is falling in at places, the staff is a bunch of weird people wearing masks. It's few short blocks from the tenderloin where you can see the open drug market. They charge for internet and using the gym. You can get a sh*tty queen mattress for $550 a night. Who actually pays for this garbage?

Fairmont Falls Short

Fairmont falls short.
Beautiful historic building, exceptional lobby, and the beds are very comfortable.
With the good points out of the way, let’s move to the areas requiring significant improvement. Rusty shower pole and stained curtain?, mouldy sealant around the bathtub?, an air conditioning unit that could be heard from fisherman’s…

With the good points out of the way, let’s move to the areas requiring significant improvement. Rusty shower pole and stained curtain?, mouldy sealant around the bathtub?, an air conditioning unit that could be heard from fisherman’s wharf?….does this sound like the level of luxury the Fairmont brand is known for?. I think not.
Valet parking only, text to attain your vehicle…or don’t bother, as the text service does not work, and your car won’t be available when you arrive at the door 15 minutes later…Wonderful service at $90 per night + tax ($112PN inclusive). Keep your eye out too, they may charge you extra for an “oversized vehicle” , though they won’t tell you this at check in, or at the valets station!.
The front of house staff were very obviously disinterested in customer feedback, so sometimes the only option is to leave a review.

Historical charm

I had a king, city view room in the original hotel. I really like that so much of the history remains and it hasn’t been renovated to death.
The room was very clean, comfortable and the bedding was top notch. Everything was really well maintained.
Lelabo bath products are a nice touch.
Yes the bathroom has a combination tub/shower - don’t…
