Yes, there was a steep hill to the property, but the calories burned meant we could eat and drink what we liked ;-). Conveniently, however, the cable car stops right outside for those who prefer not to walk. Staff were super friendly and helpful - they allowed us to check in early which was very much appreciated and guided us to the nearest cafe to grab some lunch. The room was reasonably sized and clean. There was a chiller in the room, and we had access to an ice machine. We really appreciated the bar and restaurant in the hotel which meant we could have an easy and relaxing night after travelling and the free drink was a bonus. A minor grumble is that the safe in the room was small (in terms of depth), so while it was great to store passports and laptops, it was too small to store our camera. The other main issue was the lifts - this seems to be a common theme within all the reviews, and they really are an issue. All guest lifts were not working for the majority of our stay and while we could use the service lift, only one of those was operational. I understand they are looking to refresh the lifts later this year, though this should likely be prioritised sooner given the constant issues with them. That said, this didn't dampen our stay too much and we would likely stay here again should we return to San Francisco. Read less

This should be a 5-star review, BUT during our 5 night stay (June 19th - 24th) the elevators were inoperable. At first, only 1 out of the 3 Guest elevators was working, then stopped. This should be a 5-star review, BUT during our 5 night stay (June 19th - 24th) the elevators were inoperable. At first, only 1 out of the 3 Guest elevators was working, then stopped. We were directed to use the Service elevators, of which only 1 of the two were working. The wait for an elevator was in excess of 10 minutes, so we opted to use the stairs from the 5th floor. When we asked if they were going to be repaired by the weekend, they brushed it off with a "maybe". As far as we could tell, there were no elevator repair people on site. This is unacceptable. What we liked: Great location. The Queen Room with City View from Floor 5 was lovely. Great view. Immaculate room. One of the most comfortable beds we've ever slept in (no aches or back pain!). Fluffy towels, friendly housecleaning staff, ample storage and seating area, and the two requests we made via the app (additional towels one day and housekeeping another day since we slept in) were immediately taken care of. Restaurant food was great (we enjoyed chips and salsa, and a quesidilla). Please make repairing the elevators a priority! You deserve 5 stars. Read less

There was a medical emergency and the EMS had to wait minutes for an elevator ! Hotel staff lied and tells everyone the elevator will be fixed soon , except one staff member told me since Covid the project to replace elevators was put on hold due to money and no plans to replace . The entire front desk is always full of people complaining of the line to use one service elevator which is ridiculous for a “ luxury “ hotel ! Stay elsewhere for the money !!! Read less

Wow. Dirty environment, clean room. Elevators haven't worked since we arrived, and we are on the 8th floor. Bar closes at 11pm and quiet abruptly. Staff at bar not very helpful, staff at reception are great, rush, rush, rush. Good location away from the market street and the homeless and fentinol gang

Basic room. Comfortable, spacious and clean. Great bathroom. We loved looking down on cable cars. Very quiet at night. Best rooms face the city. not the courtyard. We like California Street rooms. Fantastic location, at the intersection of 2 cable car lines (Powell Street and California Street. Stellar service.
