Trapp Family Lodge

The hotel

Remember epic film The Sound of Music about the von Trapp family and their flight from Nazi Europe? Well, this is where they landed, in Stowe, Vermont, on an enchanted farm with sweeping mountain vistas reminiscent of their beloved Austria. Still owned by the von Trapp family, their home is now a striking alpine lodge set in a magnificent outdoor playground. If you’re holidaying in winter you can enjoy horse-drawn carriage rides and there is superb skiing nearby, with the 3-mile trip by snowshoe or cross country skis to the charming Slayton Pasture Cabin for hot chocolate definitely worth the effort in the winter months. In summer, there’s hiking in the mountains, cycling, horse-riding and bird watching. In fact, the list is endless. Accommodation is extremely comfortable with plenty of home-from-home comforts. Splash around in the outdoor pool when the weather’s warm or head indoors to the health centre to swim a few laps. The kids will love spending time in their very own activity centre with fishing trips on the agenda, guided hikes, scavenger hunts and good old fashioned singalongs around the campfire come sundown. Dine in style at the main restaurant, feasting on Vermont and Austrian cuisine, including speciality dish Trapp Wiener Schnitzel. The Lodge also boasts its very own brewery – sample the range whilst listening to Jazz piano.

Location is lovely but their policies are weird. Approx 6pm on night 4/5 while I am trying to take a nap our room phone rings. I am on that side of the bed so I answer it. It is apparently one of the front desk workers calling to tell me that we have run out of room credits. I have zero idea what he is talking about and ask him to explain he goes on to basically say that they were trying to process out “nightly rent” and it didn’t go through. I have never had this issue with a hotel and have NO idea what he is talking about and when I say as much he basically says “listen lady I get paid $20 an hour for this why would I lie” when I go to hand the phone to my husband he hangs up. I attempt calling the front desk back because at this point I’m thinking it was some sort of spam call or something. I had to call three times before someone picked up the gentleman I got this time explains that they charged our card wrong initially and when they went to fix it, it wouldn’t go through. At this point I’m very irritated we are checking out tomorrow anyway, why is this trying to be addressed at 6pm when there is no manager on duty? The gentleman on the phone basically says he will leave a note for the manager to deal with when “ more experienced staff are on tomorrow” so then my husband and I look at our credit card statement online and see you’ve charged us $400 for the last three days, our nightly rate is supposed to be $298 according to my confirmation email. On top of that we were supposed to have a room with a balcony and didn’t get one and housekeeping took clean towels out of our room when cleaning and didn’t leave us with enough towels which are honestly such minor things I would not have brought them up if it wasn’t for the poor management of this place. It makes NO sense to me as to why they would be having their evening employees cold calling rooms about this it should be the managers job. Read less

What lovely ambience amongst super gardens. The Trapp family talk was brilliant and the evening meal delicious. The balcony outside our room was lovely to sit on and enjoy an early morning coffee. We found the shuttle to the borehole to be an unexpected bonus. Would we stay there again? Yes if we ever return to the area.

When you pay over a $100 for a meal, you expect the short ribs to have more meat than fat and the schnitzel to not be as tough as shoe leather. The breakfast buffet is just ok. At $30 each I expected more than just standard fare. I've had the same choices at hotels where breakfast is included. Didn't do any of the outdoor activities so can't speak to that. Being a huge fan of the movie, we went for nostalgia's sake. That and skiing are probably their biggest draw. But to be honest, you pay a 5 star price and the value is a 3. I'm glad I went, if not just to satisfy my curiosity and love of the movie. But if that is the reason you are going. stay at a different hotel and take a ride over to see the grounds and visit the store. IN MHO, the price is just not worth it. Read less

We were super excited about our stay at this resort, however, there were a number of misses And quite frankly, we have no interest in coming again.. After we made our reservation, apparently the breakfast price increased. This was an item included in our favorite things package, so there should have been no additional charge for the breakfast buffet. However, due to Management's decision to increased breakfast prices, and their decision to retroactively. Add this to existing reservations, we ended up paying an additional $2.20 per day for the included breakfast buffet. This up charge was never communicated to us and in the reservation it stated clearly all fees and taxes included. So far the resort has refused to refund the money And a message left for the manager has not been returned. This is such poor customer service. In addition, staff had incomplete knowledge of the events and amenities at the resort on multiple occasions. Please note that If you don't elect to opt out of texts or emails, you will get a ton of them regarding check-in, checkout, reconfirming reservations for meals, confirming that tours are upcoming, etc. despite all of this excessive communication, a lodge tour that we had selected was canceled and We only found out about this when we showed up at front desk to join the tour. The upsides were that there are a lot of nice trails on the property and the bird watching tour is excellent. However, we expected much more out of a resort that purports to be top-notch. Read less
