The hotel

Remember epic film The Sound of Music about the von Trapp family and their flight from Nazi Europe? Well, this is where they landed, in Stowe, Vermont, on an enchanted farm with sweeping mountain vistas reminiscent of their beloved Austria. Still owned by the von Trapp family, their home is now a striking alpine lodge set in a magnificent outdoor playground. If you’re holidaying in winter you can enjoy horse-drawn carriage rides and there is superb skiing nearby, with the 3-mile trip by snowshoe or cross country skis to the charming Slayton Pasture Cabin for hot chocolate definitely worth the effort in the winter months. In summer, there’s hiking in the mountains, cycling, horse-riding and bird watching. In fact, the list is endless. Accommodation is extremely comfortable with plenty of home-from-home comforts. Splash around in the outdoor pool when the weather’s warm or head indoors to the health centre to swim a few laps. The kids will love spending time in their very own activity centre with fishing trips on the agenda, guided hikes, scavenger hunts and good old fashioned singalongs around the campfire come sundown. Dine in style at the main restaurant, feasting on Vermont and Austrian cuisine, including speciality dish Trapp Wiener Schnitzel. The Lodge also boasts its very own brewery – sample the range whilst listening to Jazz piano.

Staff super friendly and attentive. Room very clean. Food awesome. Beautiful venue. However, the AC in the room didn’t work. Staff offered to move us to another room but the hassle wasn’t worth it. Also the cobblestone entry not friendly for wheelchairs and disabled. Change it to concrete.

Beautiful resort with rich history. Relaxing, fun and informative programs. Very good food and beer! My wife and I had a great 8th wedding anniversary celebration together and got away from the hustle and bustle of regular life in Massachusetts. Thank you!

Beautiful location, comfortable room, great activities (especially the history tour). Nice hot tub in a great location after a long day hiking. Only reason I didn’t give it 5 stars: 1. With the bier hall closed, there was nowhere to get casual food choices. The lounge only had 4 items and they were the same for lunch and dinner. We wanted to stay… Read more

With the bier hall closed, there was nowhere to get casual food choices. The lounge only had 4 items and they were the same for lunch and dinner. We wanted to stay on site for all meals and couldn’t, 2. There was nowhere to get water for our refillable bottles! Usually hotels have big water urns out in the lobby. Good for the environment and good for hydration. Read less

Always the best. Great service, great facilities and great food. Coming during Mud Season is always tough to predict, but was still able to do many things we love, like hiking to the Chapel and doing a Meet the Cows event. The Stowe area is also wonderful to explore. Many great food and drink establishments to head to after some serious hiking.
