Remember epic film The Sound of Music about the von Trapp family and their flight from Nazi Europe? Well, this is where they landed, in Stowe, Vermont, on an enchanted farm with sweeping mountain vistas reminiscent of their beloved Austria. Still owned by the von Trapp family, their home is now a striking alpine lodge set in a magnificent outdoor playground. If you’re holidaying in winter you can enjoy horse-drawn carriage rides and there is superb skiing nearby, with the 3-mile trip by snowshoe or cross country skis to the charming Slayton Pasture Cabin for hot chocolate definitely worth the effort in the winter months. In summer, there’s hiking in the mountains, cycling, horse-riding and bird watching. In fact, the list is endless. Accommodation is extremely comfortable with plenty of home-from-home comforts. Splash around in the outdoor pool when the weather’s warm or head indoors to the health centre to swim a few laps. The kids will love spending time in their very own activity centre with fishing trips on the agenda, guided hikes, scavenger hunts and good old fashioned singalongs around the campfire come sundown. Dine in style at the main restaurant, feasting on Vermont and Austrian cuisine, including speciality dish Trapp Wiener Schnitzel. The Lodge also boasts its very own brewery – sample the range whilst listening to Jazz piano.

Nice family experience.

My granddaughter enjoyed the pool, looking for frogs in the pond, seeing the cows on a tour, and playing in the children's room at the fitness center.

Just a wonderful experience. Lodge was wonderful. We ate at the Main Dining room for dinner, breakfast, and lounge. We ate in the kaffhouse and Beer Hall. Everything we ate was delicious. A small piece of Austria

I have had the good fortune of traveling to Germany and Austria to see family for the last 40+ years so I couldn’t wait to experience a little
piece of Austria in the US. Upon pulling up to the lodge, I immediately felt like I was in Austria. The design of the lodge and the view over the mountains was perfect. I could see why the von Trapp family chose to settle here. Even the smell inside the lodge reminded my husband, kids, and I of being back in Austrian hotels. Not sure how you capture that smell but it was nostalgic.
The furnishings, carpeting, wallpaper, etc were all authentically Austrian. We loved all the little spaces (indoor and outdoor) to relax around the lodge. Our room was very clean with a patio and amazing mountain view. The wooden key card was a lovely touch.
We tried to do a few hikes on property but didn’t find the signage all that clear so we didn’t go far. The outdoor pool was very clean so that was great for a hot afternoon.
I think my only complaints are the lack of ability to stream on the tv (we wanted to show our kids Sound of Music!) and the food. The food was quite overpriced for what it was and unfortunately not authentic to what I’ve had in Bavaria and Austria. My kids both agreed their Oma’s späetzle and wienerschnitzel was much better than at the lodge. However, the cucumber salad was fantastic. We added breakfast to our room package and were underwhelmed. Again, not very authentic but even for an American buffet it wasn’t worth the price.
All in all, we were very happy with our stay and appreciated the piece of Austria for a few days. Not sure we need to come back though.
