Remember epic film The Sound of Music about the von Trapp family and their flight from Nazi Europe? Well, this is where they landed, in Stowe, Vermont, on an enchanted farm with sweeping mountain vistas reminiscent of their beloved Austria. Still owned by the von Trapp family, their home is now a striking alpine lodge set in a magnificent outdoor playground. If you’re holidaying in winter you can enjoy horse-drawn carriage rides and there is superb skiing nearby, with the 3-mile trip by snowshoe or cross country skis to the charming Slayton Pasture Cabin for hot chocolate definitely worth the effort in the winter months. In summer, there’s hiking in the mountains, cycling, horse-riding and bird watching. In fact, the list is endless. Accommodation is extremely comfortable with plenty of home-from-home comforts. Splash around in the outdoor pool when the weather’s warm or head indoors to the health centre to swim a few laps. The kids will love spending time in their very own activity centre with fishing trips on the agenda, guided hikes, scavenger hunts and good old fashioned singalongs around the campfire come sundown. Dine in style at the main restaurant, feasting on Vermont and Austrian cuisine, including speciality dish Trapp Wiener Schnitzel. The Lodge also boasts its very own brewery – sample the range whilst listening to Jazz piano.

It was the perfect Vermont weekend at von Trapp Lodge! From arrival to departure! Highly recommended! A special touch was Christina attending the wedding reception!!
I love the Trapp Lodge - it's just too expensive.

It was our 2nd return visit to the Trapp Lodge - the grounds are beautiful and the hills are alive. It is extremely expensive and the staff don't seem trained up to the price charged for the rooms. It was our 2nd return visit to the Trapp Lodge - the grounds are beautiful and the hills are alive. It is extremely expensive and the staff don't seem trained up to the price charged for the rooms. This was just our experience with our last visit. They appeared understaffed during a busy July weekend and there was a wedding with 170 people. The lodge was booked pretty solid, and it just felt like we were rushed through our stay for 1 night. Front desk person was great at check in - front desk person the next morning not so much. I called the bellman/front desk 3 times during our stay, no one answered. Had to get luggage cart myself the next morning. If you stay on 4th floor you have to carry your own bags down a set of stairs to your luggage cart at the bottom of them. 4th floor rooms are quaint, but darker than other rooms i've stayed in and do not have a balcony or patio. We paid 700 for that room and in the listing said it would have a balcony. We did not. Felt stuffy and darker on 4th floor. AC worked fine though.

Overpriced, old, leaking. Not a resort experience at all

This was a truly poor hotel experience. The hotel was leaking and falling apart, with major areas (like the indoor pool) closed for repairs. Our room left a lot to be desired - it was old, tired, and worn. The staff made us feel like we were a nuisance, not even providing an additional bath towel when asked (I had to go get one myself from the…

The staff made us feel like we were a nuisance, not even providing an additional bath towel when asked (I had to go get one myself from the pool area). I'm not sure what the $35 resort fee covers, since no advertised activities were available during our stay. Everything only occurs once/week, so if you're not there on the right day, you don't get that experience. It's really just price gouging. It really has the feel of a place that maybe used to be nice, but those days are over. Unless you're overly into the Sound of Music, I'd definitely pass by this hotel and find a better option.

Such a gorgeous, special place! My friend and I went over 4th of July weekend and had an amazing time. The property is SO beautiful. The rooms are spacious and the beds are extremely comfortable. We had excellent service everywhere we went, from the front desk to the staff in the dining area to the Bierhall to the tours. I loved meeting the cows and learning about the lodge's humane, sustainable farming practices. The Bierhall is also excellent - recommend taking the brewery tour and drinking multiple rounds of the Helles. Can't wait to visit again!
