The Beekman, A Thompson Hotel, by Hyatt

Financial District, New York

Virgin rating

The hotel

Built in the same decade as the Brooklyn Bridge, The Beekman had stiff competition when it came to architectural neighbours – but its glamour and grace granted it kudos with the building buffs of the 19th century – and today. This skyscraper’s kept its drama with its marble entrance, Persian rug-slung lobby, and Victorian balustrade-draped atrium, which stretches nine storeys skyward before being capped with a glass pyramid. It’s not just opulent in design though, with its ‘nothing’s-too-much-trouble’ service and dining scene mirroring its old-world splendour and new-world luxury. Two of Manhattan’s finest names are behind The Beekman’s restaurants: Tom Colicchio reinterprets old and new classics at Temple Court, while Keith McNally recreates French brasserie elegance at Augustine. Or you could join the socialites (and sometimes celebs) at The Alley Cat for cocktails and Japanese Izakaya comfort food.

After the headache of hosting both of our families for Christmas Eve I surprised my girlfriend with a stay here for Christmas Day to get away from it all for one night. And boy was it an escape we both needed and deserved!!! The rooms were so beautifully decorated, feeling more like a stay in someone's home than a sterile hotel. We checked in around 3pm and just walked around the hotel admiring how beautifully and thoughtfully designed it was. We walked down to Temple Court for dinner which had over an hour wait with no room at the bar, but the host took our number to let us know when something opened up. So, we ventured next door to Le Gratin to try our luck there. They were also fully committed for the night, but the staff found a way to make room for us and we had one of our best meals ever. By the time we were done with dinner a table had opened up at Temple Court, so we sat for a drink right by the Christmas tree. My girlfriend and I felt like we were in a Christmas movie, the good kind. We felt cozy and romantic, the staff was friendly, the space inviting and just breathtaking. The beds were one of the most comfortable I've slept in and with a late checkout it was hard to get out of. Would highly recommend staying here for ANY occasion but will definitely be staying here annually for Christmas!! Read less

Beautiful rooms, lively bar and restaurant. warm ambiance - also lovely bathrooms and shower pressure! :) Clean room, beautiful architecture and style. We loved the vibe and although this was for business, this has been added to our list as a must when we return for personal.

Even though I have lived in NYC for over 20 years, this was my first time at the hotel. It was everything I wanted it to be and more. The concierge was so kind sending up a bday gift to my room. My boyfriend and I ate at The Temple Court for dinner and then The Bar Room for breakfast. The meals were extraordinary and the card from the staff for the bday was a lovely detail. We only stayed for a day and it felt like a week. You must visit and stay here . . . you won't be disappointed. Read less
