Pros: - Early check in allowance, - All the amenities in the room(except coffee-tea maker), -Generous discount coupons to use for breakfast , restaurant and bar, -Excellent location(5 min. walking distance to Times Squares and subway and bus), -Nice in site restaurant and bar, -Many restaurants and shops nearby, -Very friendly, polite and helpful staff... Cons: -No real lobby(only a waiting area), -Cozy queen room which we had chosen because of the price, is better suited for one person,or two with very little luggage , and for a short stay. We will definitely come back to this hotel next time when traveling to New York. Read less

I always stress so much trying to find the right hotel, cold sweats reading review after review, the dread of turning up and it looking NOTHING like you expected, but safe to say this hotel is fantastic and worth every penny!! I visited with my 13 year old for his first trip to NY, staying for 5 nights. It’s a bougie little boutique style hotel, possibly more suited to couples as the rooftop bar looked great! but we still loved it anyway! Room is small (like most in central NY) but perfectly formed, they have thought of everything you need for a comfortable stay, including lots of power points and USB ports next to the bed! (Fantastic if like us, only had one plug adapter!) Clothes steamer and hairdryer both good quality and worked well, nice toiletries (although body wash was unscented, so I’m glad I brought a few of my own) and a handy nook under the bed for the suitcase. Our room was on the 10th floor near the lift but was super quiet, we never heard any noises from other rooms for our whole stay. Water dispensers on each floor which we didn’t realise until we asked at reception. House keeping is at your discretion and can be arranged during check-in. Plus a view to die for! The lobby and lift area can become quite cramped at times, especially at the weekends when the bars are busier. Hotel guests were all helpful assisting each other with luggage and holding lift door etc, but we found people visiting the bar could be a little rude/stuck up. Feel like the staff could help a little more to assist the situation. (I’m being picky here, and literally my only area which could be improved). Saying that, we absolutely loved our stay, the hotel is a quiet cozy retreat away from the hustle and bustle on its doorstep. Perfect location to get around on foot to the theatres, Central Park, Times Square, The Rockefeller Centre, Pier 86. Subways are close by and easy to navigate around the rest of the city. I would definitely recommend and hope to return! Take reusable water bottles and fill at hotel or most cafes/restaurants will do it for you too. As local shops will try to charge you $5 for a bottle! -So be wary what they are putting through the till! There are good places for American style breakfasts around the corner on 8th Ave, but if you want great coffee and fresh pastries go to Sullivan St. Bakery! Around 7 min walk from hotel. Read less

We stayed at the Civilian in 2023 and knew we had to come back! We just completed our trip in July, 2025 at the Civilian and it was even better than we remembered, if that is possible! The staff are lovely! The room, neat and clean with great views! The location- this would be enough in itself- close to Broadway, food, subway, Central Park, Times… Read more

I'm glad I found this hotel, which is unique amongst most if not all options in the Theater area of midtown: it has non-chain character, high tech smoothness, fun Broadway/theater photos everywhere, nice internal restaurant options (which are more on the higher priced side), moderately reasonable prices, comfortable smallish (as usual for the area) rooms, nicely redone bathrooms, efficient elevators. There isn't much of a lobby and when we came in very late there wasn't staff, but we were able to pre-check in electronically on their nice app, less human interaction overall. The rooftop is quite nice with great views and fun design but you will have committ to spend $$ to get a table, which will add up fast as the drinks are on the high end. Overall a nice boutique hotel with new feel to best all the chains and dumps which represent most of the other options! Read less
