“Watch out…Per Day Facility Fees $30 for wifi, coffee, tea and water”

During our recent stay in NYC we stayed at the Kixby, the rooms were clean and staff very friendly. Rooms were huge compared to other NYC hotels which was fabulous as well as the showers had great water pressure. A few items were not so great; 1) The street noise through the night from garbage pick up from 12-2 and then deliveries starting at 5am. Best to pick a room away from the street 2) The $30 per day facility charge on top of the Room rate - when asked what this was for we were told it was for the Kixby Water Bottles (told at check it were a free gift), WiFi (we never used), Gym (we never used), and the 24/7 water, tea, and coffee on the 2nd floor (which we were never told about so we never used). I’ve NEVER been charged a $30/per day fee like this in all my travels. 3) Rooms did not have Black out curtains so you cannot make the rooms completely dark which is surprising when you are in the middle of NYC where there are always street lights on. Overall I doubt we will be back because of the fees and sound. With so many options in NYC why get charged for things you were not aware or or that you did not use. It was such a disappointment!

“Great base for sightseeing in New York”

Located on 35th Street this hotel is well placed a short walk from the subway, and plenty of eateries/bars nearby. Due to a certain President attending the basketball game that evening we had to be dropped off by the taxi two blocks away. Upon checking in there was a little confusion over the deposit and tax to be paid, I was told at one point I had to pay near $500 dollars - in the end I had to pay the $250 dollars and the tax was paid from that at the end of our stay when I received the balance back to my card. Aside from that check in was fairly simple and we went to our room. We had booked a LUX King room - I am so pleased we didn't book a queen as the floor space in the LUX King was very small - we had to keep moving our suitcases around to get to things so can only imagine how small the Queen rooms may have been. Saying that, the room was clean, tidy and comfortable enough - apart from nearly kicking the corner of the bed when navigating around it - the picture on the website must be taken from the unit in front of the bed making the room look larger than it is. Sleep quality was very hit and miss - yes it's New York, and yes, the city never sleeps but I would have hoped for some soundproofing on the rooms, because the Knicks were playing 2 nights out of the 7 we stayed, the noise from the road, the bar on the roof and just in general meant we didn't sleep soundly on most of the nights - bearing in mind how tiring going around New York is this was a surprise. The bathroom was fine, although not enough space to put your toiletries - the unit housing your towels under the sink had rungs on it rather than a shelf so majority of them had to be stored in bags or on the top in your room. The shower was good and had a rainfall head and a smaller 'normal' shower head. We ventured up to the roof top bar on our first night but because the Knicks were playing at Madison Square Garden the prices were on the very high side - we paid nearly $50 dollars for just 3 drinks - didn't seem to bother the locals though who are obviously used to paying over the odds for special occasions. You couldn't fault the view of the Empire State Building however, all decked out in orange and blue for the Knicks. The prices for drinks did put us off going up to the roof bar again though. Continental Breakfast in the Black Tap Burger Bar attached to the hotel was perfectly good enough to get us up &moving for the day. There was fruit, yogurts, boiled eggs, pastries, cheese and cereals on offer, along with coffee, tea & fruit juices - we have had continental breakfasts before in the US and were pleasantly surprised by the choices available. The staff in the hotel were great, housekeeping to a high standard, the only small gripe in this area was the young woman in the Black Tap at breakfast time checking you in, who looked uninterested and just sat there tapping away at her phone. The staff at the Black Tap outside of breakfast time were great and the quality of the food (and the portion sizes) you couldn't fault. Our flight home wasn't until the evening so we had the option of putting our cases i the secure luggage room which was helpful giving us the opportunity for one last stroll up to Times Square. The concierge booked our taxi for us which came within 10 mins. Having seen some of the other hotels in the close vicinity I am glad we booked the Kixby and if coming back to NY are highly likely to book here again - albeit with a larger room.

We found the location of Kixby Hotel to be excellent; there is a subway within 2 minutes of the hotel and we used this to get around the main sites. The young lad Rob, from reception provided excellent customer service.
