“Shabby not chic”

My travel agent booked a room with a view of Empire State building , got there and it faced a busy cross street . The room was right opposite an elevator , where people waiting , blocked your room. The hotel is old and shabby , it's due for a refurb in 2026 and needs one . Expensive in roof top bar. Went once, over $33 for one beer and a cocktail. Lobby sold tiny bottles of coke etc for $5 dollars . The room itself was fairly spacious , no place to store luggage though and only 6 hangers in wardrobe and lights that don't work. Quite a dark dingy room as no ceiling lights , just lamps . 3 pillows for 2 people so had to request more. $ 48 a night room tax on top of price of a room , extortionate, don't know why it is so high. In EU it's only about €5 a night for a luxury hotel. Not sure if the rating of American hotels , but this is not 4 star hotel.

“Very Good Pre-Cruise Stay”

We asked for a quiet room, and got it; although it was on the 3rd floor and the trade off for "quiet" was no view. No matter, we had an excellent night's sleep every night of our 4-night stay. Unusually for Manhattan the room size was good, with plenty of storage for 2 large cases and 2 carry-ons, and the price was competitive although we couldn't really understand the point of the $42 daily "facilities fee", plus tax, that included a $10 daily cupboard credit that entitled you to a can of coke apiece or two packets of crisps as well as WIFI and a one-off laundry allowance. All in all a bit of a rip-off! On a more positive note the location was excellent. Short walk to ESB and longer walk via 5th Avenue or Madison to Central Park. Murray Hill is a decent area with little outside noise. Be aware that the on-site dining arrangements are - we were told - separate from the hotel although you can (at least for breakfast) charge this to your room a/c. Breakfast is in the "Take Care" restaurant and you can either dine here in the evening or, as we did a couple of times, use the rooftop "Vintage Green" Terrace Bar and Bistro, although this is popular and can get busy, Fantastic views over ESB at night, though! All in all, we would definitely recommend and stay here again.

“Business and pleasure trip”

I booked the Shelbourne based on its location and also cause I knew it used to be under the Affinia ownership. I always love how big the rooms and the service I got. So this time there was no exception. I was really impressed with this location from the day I checked in till the day I left. The front doorman Adam, Gene and Dennis took care of us every day and greeting us by name. They really made us felt like I was home. No matter who I encounter to ask questions you guys were all so attentive. This location especially was so convenient. Also I have ti say for booking the 1 bedroom with loft was great and nice to have the extra room space for luggage and the convenience of having a microwave and fridge to store leftovers and water. This was an exceptional location and convenient to everything
