The Edgewater

The hotel

Sitting right on top of Pier 67, this is Seattle's original waterfront hotel and quite the local landmark. It’s always been a quirky and cool spot, since it was built in 1962 — KISS parked their platform boots here and The Beatles once famously fished out of their hotel room window. We don’t recommend that, of course, but you can imagine the playful and chilled vibe that you get at the the Edgewater. Expect quirky, cosy rooms with beautiful views of Elliott Bay, happy hours showcasing amazing house concoctions, and a restaurant serving the freshest organic and local dishes. Take in a bit of live music at the weekend and dine outdoors to make the most of those water views.

Image of the Tripadvisor rating A fun and classy stay in Belltown

My wife and I really enjoyed our stay at the Edgewater Hotel. The outside is inconspicuous but the interior is very tastefully decorated and celebrates the rock history in a classy manner. The staff was top-notch: very courteous, helpful, and made us feel right at home. Loved being on the water with about 10 minute walks to Belltown, Pike Place… Read more

Excellent hotel right on the water. I was upgraded to a king room with a water view and I swear you could have fished right from the room if you wanted to, the water is RIGHT THERE. Great location for exploring downtown on foot as well, I hope to come back again!

So, earlier this year we had a couple of occasions to return to and spend a few days in Seattle after having moved out of our home for a temporary stay in Vancouver. One of those stays was at the Lotte Hotel Seattle, a mistake never to be repeated (review can be found here on Tripadvisor). The other was at the Edgewater, the wiser choice. As couple the now Mrs. and I did a lot of “staycationing” during our 13+ plus years together in Seattle. And we often talked about staying at the Edgewater, being the landmark that it is as an absolute Seattle institution. Alas, we never had, in part because the Edgewater labels itself a “4 Star” hotel, when we favor 5-star properties, and because it is…well….old. But since we were in the process of leaving Seattle behind with no idea when we would return, we decided to get that Edgewater stay in. Plus, they had a killer rate going that included breakfast, so the Mrs. made undisputable case that we could forgo an Amex Plat FHR property on this occasion. So glad we did. From the moment we arrived things were…nice. The valet / bellman was pleasant, polite and courteous. Check in was great, with “Jessie” also being warm and of good cheer, but professional. And…with just a wee bit of prompting, Jessie granted us a VERY nice room upgrade, for which he declined to take the gratuity I offered him. Thanks Jessie! Understand something…just to be clear (because I think our job is to share with details our impression of properties, even if the less than flattering aspects did not negatively impact the stay), I can definitely see why the Edgewater is a “4-star” property, versus “5-star”. It feels warm, nice, cozy…but not luxurious. It doesn’t hide its age well – nothing was broken or in ill repair, but…you can just tell that the property is as old as it is (built in 1962). It also has “quirks”…some might call it “charm”, but I like my hotels to be quirk free. I don’t know if I would have had such a positive overall impression if we had not been upgraded to such a fabulous room. But, thankful, we were. I wish I could remember the room number, because the room really was fantastic. It was a big, comfortable suite, with an absolutely gorgeous (and clearly renovated down to the studs) bathroom. It also had a great view, which could have been even better had the weather cooperated. Quirks? Hard metal chairs, HVAC controls that we never did quite figure out, artwork that was…quirky. But yes, big comfortable room, with a big, beautiful bathroom (I love a big bathroom in a hotel suite). And it had “Edgy”, the bear which was left on the bed to greet us when we checked it, which was a lovely touch (the Mrs. adopted Edgy, and he now sits on our living room sofa. We were told at the front desk we’d be charged…though I don’t think it happened). Beyond the room though, I once again want to give a “shout out” to the hotel staff. Everyone we encountered outside the restaurant was pleasant and professional, and a couple were just amazing. A definite high level of hospitality. Overall, we really enjoyed our stay, which was a welcome experience post the excruciatingly unpleasant visit to the Lotte Hotel Seattle the week before. But…I might not have felt that way if we didn’t have such a great room…and you might not be so lucky as to get an upgrade. If you like your hotels shiny and brand new, while having Four Seasons levels of luxuries, the Edgewater might not be for you. On the other hand, it is a landmark, and I am glad we got to stay before departing Seattle, just so that I can say I have. Read less
