A very nice establishment set a short way (or free shuttle )from the most gorgeous beach. Setting is lovely , location is not first rate although local woodland and wildlife was amazing. Rooms are well presented and equipped. (Could do with some usb sockets) House-keeping is fine and grounds are well kept. Some upgrading is needed especially where veneers on doors and skirting is warping. Lack of sound insulation via connecting room doors is a serious issue - quite fixable. Pool is nice and loungers well spaced. A plate with Happy Birthday written in chocolate was a nice touch ! Welcome cocktail and cool cloth - appreciated. Getting drinks later was more problematic (and fairly pricey ) Breakfast is fine and varied but we were told on several occasions how we would be charged - when it was already included. Not ver relaxing ! Main issue : staff attitude. Some lovely staff … others need re-training. It must be a skill to make phrases such as ‘welcome’ and ‘have a nice day’ sound so intimidating ! Some dining room staff and two reception staff members were not very welcoming. We enjoyed our stay but it could have been better… Read less

I realised I had not posted this review at the time but just drafted it so apologies for the lateness. We stayed at this hotel as our usual, the Colony Club, had been taken over by Marriott Group. I was more than dissapointed with the conduct of the staff, accomodation and food at the Sugar Cane Hotel. What was supposed to be an a la carte made to order breakfast was changed after the 3rd morning of our 2 week holiday to a buffet with just the eggs made to order. They were very short staffed and the pool bar was only staffed occasionally as the staff that were there were constantly called up to help with transient visitors from coach trips who stopped by as the hotel was a designated eatery for them and clearly they took priority to the hotel guests. There were groups of builders staying there from local construction sites who were dressed in dirty gear all the time eating and drinking around the pool and then in evening in restaurant, dress code was not enforced to these chaps. We had to eat on several occasions in the evening at an area at bottom of gardens that was mosquito ridden with very limited menu choices. No aircon/fans and on at least 3 occasions during our stay people refused to eat there and left their meals as being bitten constantly. One of the evenings we ate elsewhere and were then lambasted by the head waiter when we arrived back for not eating at the hotel! The main bar was always understaffed in the evening and you had to wait for other guests to have eaten before someone could make you a drink in the lounge area. Our TV never worked in the room the whole of the time we were there, it was reported but no one seemed to be able to fix it. We had repeatedly asked for a late checkout and were refused and were told to ask only on morning of the day we were due to leave even though guests who were there that they seemed to know were told this had been sorted for them and not to worry. I would never return to this hotel and would not recommend it. Barbados is a beatiful island and people very friendly, for the price and what happened when we were there this hotel lets the island down. Read less

This hotel is a little gem! I was a little concerned after reading some of the reports, but having now been I can say a lot of them are OTT. Yes, service can be a little slow at times and some staff aren't quite as friendly as others but I would say they are very much the minority. The hotel itself feels a little dated in places and could do with a little up keep/maintenance but nothing major - the rooms feel very much within keeping of the setting (and I normally prefer modern). The grounds are beautiful and it feels like you are seeing a part of Barbados you wouldn't otherwise! The pool is fabulous and a good size for a little swim and the bonus is, it's never busy. The cliental is a little older on the whole but I (mid 40's) loved that it wasn't in anyway rowdy and everyone was very friendly (there weren't many people I didn't speak to over the course of 7 days). The food is of a great standard (and I've been to plenty of Michelin starred restaurants). It's not your bod standard AI - it's al la carte most nights, with some buffets but again, these are served to you rather than self serve. My only slight gripe was getting the same menu two nights running, one that was unfortunately my least favourite - two of the four main options were beer battered fish and chips and sausage and mash. I don't like either and would have much preferred a traditional Caribbean dish as an option. The hotel is quite remote so the hotel shuttle is great (unless you have a car) but it doesn't run at night so you'd need to organise taxi's if you want to venture out in the evening. The beach the shuttle drops you at is beautiful and I highly recommend you visit as Sandals are building a new resort there, which will destroy the view eventually. It doesn't have any facilities though (would be great if the hotel could make arrangements with a local beach bar so that there's somewhere with sunbeds/facilities - even at an extra fee). Overall, I would highly recommend and have no doubt I'll be back again in the future. Read less

As most guests only stay for two or three nights they do not realise the shortcomings, so the company does not need to make any real improvements or investment. I found the Ocean View Suite dated and shabby, especially the small shower room. The view was good but the first ' Ocean view' I was offered did not have one!! I found most of the staff to be delightful but lacking direction and the food was of poor quality but I suppose it depended on what one is used to. The dining arrangements were somewhat confusing. In fairness to the hotel, the grounds were lovely and I enjoyed the live music nights and the tables around the pool on the buffet evenings where the wine was plentiful and good. I would not return to SC Club nor could I recommend it to others. Read less

I have to say that my husband and I had such a lovely relaxing holiday. The hotel has a very laid back vibe. The staff were all very lovely. Some with happy outgoing personalities and others a little more reserved. We enjoyed being waited on in the restaurants with the delicious food served to us. Definitely prefer this to a free for all, where too many guests handle food at other hotels at buffets. We really appreciated the free shuttle to both the beach and Speightstown. Not only this but to Haywards market too. Our glass bottom boat trip was really fantastic. Not only did we see fish and turtles but we snorkeled with the turtles around us too. This was a totally complementary and amazing experience. Our room service was exemplary with regular changes of towels and bed linen. The management were very hands on and always around for a chat. Should we return to Barbados it would definitely be to The Sugar Cane. Our advice to anyone staying there is to chill, you're on holiday Read less
