The hotel

One of Toronto’s landmark hotels, Fairmont Royal York was built by Canadian Pacific Railway in 1929 and has since welcomed dignitaries and royalty, including Queen Elizabeth II. Once the tallest building in the British Empire, the hotel is housed in a distinctive chateau-style high-rise building and offers a wealth of amenities to keep you busy in-between sightseeing. The fitness centre is almost a world of its own with lap pool, children’s wading pool, steam rooms, saunas and a state-of-the-art gym. Two levels of shops are enough to satisfy the most ardent of shoppers with more shops located directly underneath the hotel in the PATH complex. Several exceptional restaurants cater to every kind of culinary desire. For mouth-watering steaks, look no further than Benihana Japanese Steakhouse and for the best martinis in town, head to the Library Bar with its rich furnishings and elegant atmosphere. Not to be missed is the afternoon tea and Rooftop Garden Tour, held every Saturday and Sunday.

The Fairmont Royal York is a majestic old hotel well-situated in old Toronto. Dark wood, gold leaf, and marble abound. And the hotel is close to a lot of things. We were there for a weekend to see a sports game, and we stayed on the Gold Club level. Trains, buses, taxis, and Ubers were all right there. Everything was very well done. Friendly staff, good service, clean, well-done rooms, and the Gold Club Level lounge was great. Good snacks and good food throughout the day. There's no dress code at the Fairmont Royal York. So in the hotel's elegant restaurant, lounge, bar, and even in the Gold Club Level lounge, you'll see people dressed like they just got off a Carnival Cruise line ship. However you're dressed, you can walk in off the street and dine at the restaurant, and drink in the lounges and bars. So the people vibe doesn't match the hotel's classic/majestic vibe. But that's the only "off" thing here. Definitely consider the Fairmont Royal York for your Toronto stay. Read less

Everything was fabulous, from the reception, to the bar where we had beef sliders, cocktail and beer, to the room with comfy beds. The icing on the cake though, was the health spa area with pool (15m), jacuzzi, steam room and sauna. One suggestion would be to have a bucket in the sauna to get the heat up (there was a tap but no receptacle). Finally, the option to leave bags after checking out was great, allowing us to explore without the hassle of our bags. Read less

My wife and I had looked forward to our stay at the iconic Royal York Hotel, and in most ways, it lived up to our expectations. The bedroom was a good size, the staff were pleasant and helpful, the room was quiet apart from the very unmusical booming from a band on the promenade in front of Union Station (which mercifully ended about ten pm) and the location was ideal for a few days get-away. However, there were some unexpected flaws in the hotel. The building is an old one, so making additional room to a floor plan is nigh impossible. Consequently, the bathroom in our room was tiny. I mean tiny. The towel rack was behind the bathroom door, so to get towel I had to close the door (more about the door in a moment). The space between bathtub, toilet and sink was negligible. About that bathroom door. It would not stay shut. When my wife had an early morning bath, to avoid disturbing me while I still slept, she had to lock the door to keep it closed. Then when it was open, it not only covered the towel rack, it was a constant reminder of its presence as it nudged my rear end while at the sink. The doors generally were an issue. The closet door would not stay open. The room’s entry door was very heavy to move (as were the revolving doors at the Hotel’s entry). Granted, we are seniors, but we are not weaklings. So when a gallant gentleman assisted my wife to rotate the revolving door, you get an idea of its weight. For some reason, guests were ordered to use the revolving door, rather than a few regular doors. A final concern was that the lighting in the room is limited. We attempted to use the coffee maker which was attached to a sliding drawer but trying to find how to remove the water reservoir and generally how to operate it was a challenge in the poor light until my wife produced her trusty flashlight. Despite these hiccups, we enjoyed our days at the hotel. Would I recommend it? Yes, but with the caveat that it is on the order of a three star hotel, so gear your expectations accordingly. Also, be prepared for a host of unexpected taxes which balloon the final price. David P. O’Connor Read less

The hotel is beautiful and classy and the rooms are comfortable. The staff is very professional and friendly with attention to detail. Our 90 old mother felt like a queen! We had an amazing stay.
