The hotel

One of Toronto’s landmark hotels, Fairmont Royal York was built by Canadian Pacific Railway in 1929 and has since welcomed dignitaries and royalty, including Queen Elizabeth II. Once the tallest building in the British Empire, the hotel is housed in a distinctive chateau-style high-rise building and offers a wealth of amenities to keep you busy in-between sightseeing. The fitness centre is almost a world of its own with lap pool, children’s wading pool, steam rooms, saunas and a state-of-the-art gym. Two levels of shops are enough to satisfy the most ardent of shoppers with more shops located directly underneath the hotel in the PATH complex. Several exceptional restaurants cater to every kind of culinary desire. For mouth-watering steaks, look no further than Benihana Japanese Steakhouse and for the best martinis in town, head to the Library Bar with its rich furnishings and elegant atmosphere. Not to be missed is the afternoon tea and Rooftop Garden Tour, held every Saturday and Sunday.

We booked this hotel for its location and centrality to all things Toronto !!! We booked a double deluxe suite for our family, and it was large enough for all 4 of us for almost a week The beds were comfy and we got a perfect night's sleep. The air con in the room was great and quiet. We were able to set a low enough temperature whilst we slept. We requested a fridge and microwave so that we could cater for our needs. We had a car and self parked at the green P parking station around the corner from hotel. Had no issues with this. The hotel's history was very interesting to learn about. The hotels location allowed us to use the trains and walk to the harbour to be able to get to Toronto Island and explore the island on hired push bikes. This was fabulous. We also walked to two Blue Jay's games which were terrific and exciting to be part of the atmosphere. Our suite had a view of Union Station and Rogers Center. Our room wasn't ready when we checked in, but a big mention to Natalia who was fantastic. She was an excellent communicator and did an awesome job catering for our requests and needs. She also wrote a beautiful note delivered to our suite which made our stay even more special. Across the raad was Union Station which had really good eateries that the kids enjoyed. Also a notable mention to Jerico, who was hospitable and helpful during our stay. We really enjoyed staying at the hotel whilst in Toronto, as the staff customer service made it a memorable one. Whilst this is a beautiful old building and the public areas are nice they are also very noisy, no chance of a quiet romantic dinner. This was booked as a luxury end to our 3 week trip in Canada and I was just disappointed with our stay here. We had a king room booked but was put into a queen. the bed was comfortable but the room was so dark and dated with no drawers and barely any wardrobe space (4 Hangers) so we had to live out of suitcases for 3 nights. Bathroom was tiny and the shower had one setting, scalding hot. Staff seemed to be busy, drinks from the bar took about 20 minutes to arrive, and dirty glasses were left outside the room for 2 days. I had heard that Fairmount hotels are supposed to be luxurious and i just felt let down and was glad to check out. Read less

Over priced and underwhelming. No microwave, no refrigerator and no internet. (Available at additional cost) Had three different rooms, first two rooms the mattress was much more like a hammock than a bed. Shower would repeatedly just stop for no reason in first room. TV would regularly stop and say no signal. Staff is fair but does have… Read more

I want to thank Jane for making my birthday so special. I had to work downtown, and when I checked in first thing in the morning, she had a room ready for me, allowing me to go in right away, which was a huge help. The bottle of wine was lovely, and the turn-down service was great. However, what made the experience truly magical were the notes she… Read more
