Dreams Rose Hall

Montego Bay, Jamaica

Star rating

The hotel

Lying on a beautiful, long stretch of private beach, the Dreams Rose Hall sits within 400 lush acres and is home to an 18th-century sugar plantation. A popular feature here is the iconic swimming pool but guests (kids' especially) also love the Sugar Mill Falls Waterpark, which is the largest in Jamaica. Why not grab a tube and float down the ‘lazy river’ or try one of the slides. There’s also a daily kids' club, leaving you with time to recharge in the full-service spa, or why not try out the Championship golf course. A variety of restaurant options with fine dining and sophisticated wine lists are on-site, with the newly renovated Rum Factory a particular hit, as is the Three Palms, overlooking the beautifully landscaped golf course.

If you are looking for a relaxed family resort spend your money elsewhere. This place hold 2 firsts in our vacation history: 1, The first place we have ever wanted to return to. 2, The first place we have insisted we be moved from. It seems this place is now a conference / events venue. Catering for the biggest event at the time and your holiday will have to fit in around them. When we first arrived there was a big conference of churches from around the Caribbean this meant every meal was a collection of Caribbean dishes, ok I know we are in the Caribbean and I’m quite partial to a bit of curried goat, rice and peas and jerk something or other but after 2 days of cold versions of the above being served on the patio outside Fresh buffet our only option is the Sea side grill for Italian. Then to our great surprise the first meal in the buffet after the conference finished ………..Jamaican theme night at least it wasn’t served from stands on the patio so was relatively warm and we had an option of cold chicken nuggets and fries for the kids. This is when I noticed people sitting in the bar with bags of KFC (had a quick check and no Uber eats in Montego Bay). All of this we could deal with make the best of it and look forward to the resort settling down following the church conference ending………….How wrong we were. The next event rolls in well twerks in more like it’s the D11X party 4 days of pool parties beach parties taking over pools and bars & patios for DJs and dancing and the whole place turned into a Caribbean spring break ( 18 to 30’s if your from the uk) First day they set up on the Barking frog bar and terrace and hotel lobby when asked what was happening a staff supervisor told us it’s just a few hours and the hotel will be back to normal, complete lie we later found out by reading D11X poster in the lobby it’s four days of events, various organised pool parties & beach parties and open bars around the hotel. We were hounded off our Sun beds told that “you don’t wanna be here we have 200 people coming to this pool to party” So we had no choice but to move to the water park pool where everyone who wasn’t part of the pool party had to go. Only to be greeted by the hotel entertainment team set up playing loud music and overseeing beer chugging and strongman competitions a quick scan around the pool the only relativly quiet place was around the lazy river in the smoke of the jerk hut, there was no escape from the mayhem we ended up back in our room. We complained this time to a manager from the hotel only to be told it’s a conference hotel what did you expect. So we went back to our room packed up our stuff and started the process with our tour operator to transfer us out of there. Dinner that night would have been the ok if it wasn’t for the party mob fuelling up for their next big event as loud and shouty as ever. Next morning we spoke to another hotel manager who was understanding and informed us the hotel will release the money for our unused nights to our tour operator. A few hours later and we were out of there. I feel sorry for those families checking in at that time and seeing the parties going on. Add to this the place has seems to have a uncared for feel, with dirty pools, half eaten plates of food left out from day to day, deflated pool floats left in bushes for days. Spilt drinks left on tiles around the poolside, the steps up to the water slides were slimy and dirty. Never once saw someone hose the poolside off . The majority of staff are hard working and helpful but some are just not bothered. In summary spend your money elsewhere it seems the hotel would rather have the event / convention bookings anyway. We loved this hotel last time we visited and this experience has not only put us off this hotel it’s doubtful we will return to Jamaica again. Read less

I went with about 50 people as a family reunion. First I booked it as the Hilton Rose Hall at some point ownership changed. Check in was not great I was told that I booked a double queen Oceanview room which I knew I wouldn't be anything that I would book. I was then brought to the room with all my luggage. I looked up reservation once I was able to charge my phone and connect to the WIFI and I was supposed to be in a King Mountainview room. Well getting my room moved was not easy when I first checked in there were only about 10 people in the lobby and only about 20 minutes later there were about 80-90 people in a big mess. it took about 45 minutes for someone to help. Day two my room was flooded by the ac and had to get fixed. They said they couldn't change my room nor offer me anything after my clothes were soaked due to the hotel being full. They need better customer service and to not say no or that they can't do anything after you spend thousands at their hotel . If I could add video I would. The food was ok but your not able to take anything back to your room Read less

If I could give a lower rating than one star I would. This hotel is not enjoyable. It may be all inclusive but the food and drinks are not good, the hotel is old and we were knickled and dimed for everything. We have to leave one day early. I did everything to reach out to Guest services, sending a message through instagram and even calling Mexico because nowhere on their website do they offer customer service. Things happen and hotels have to amenable to adjusting with their guests. Till today, they’ve refused giving me back my money for the one night we can’t stay. Be kind to yourself. If you want a headache-free vacation, book somewhere else. Read less

We booked this hotel through a southwest airlines vacation. First, the southwest flight from Jamaica to the US was a terrible mess, but ill discuss that later. The hotel. It was a nice hotel. It was recently a Hilton property and was recently taken over by hyatt. It still had Hilton branded linens and signage. We had all inclusive. All drinks including alcohol were included and flowing freely. There was a refrigerator in our room and it was restocked each day. The refrigerator even had beer in it. Also, we had different chips and they were restocked each day as well. Our housekeeper rosalee did a great job. We tipped her each day. They have several restaurants on the resort. The best in our opinion was rum Factory. They have a lazy river and water slide for kids. They have a buffet that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner that had a lot of variety. There was also a coffee shop that had coffee tea, pasties, sandwiches and ice cream in the afternoon and evening. It was a great option if you don't want to go to the buffet. I will say that in the restaurant, the portion s were huge. I think they do that for their American customers. The staff was helpful. Keree Ann with playa was very helpful and persistent, although we did not use her services. There was nightly live entertainment and a DJ. There were vendors on the property if you want souvenirs. there were cabs if you chose to go off property. The beach was fabulous. There were enough lounges that no one had to pull up right next to you. Read less

We arrived at Dreams Rose Hall Montego Bay on a Saturday afternoon around 2 p.m. Preston warmly greeted us and provided us with refreshments for our party. Upon reaching the check-in counter, we were greeted by Yoland, who diligently worked to find two rooms for us and our kids that could connect. At the time, only one of our rooms was ready for immediate check-in, with the second expected to be ready by 4 p.m. After checking in and changing, we headed to the main pool, which was lively with a DJ playing music and filled with men and women in thongs and other scantily clad bathing suits. While my children are 15 and 19, I wasn’t too concerned, but the family-friendly atmosphere I had expected was not the case. To me, this was the first indication that the resort was struggling with its identity. We considered transferring to another resort, but after a long day of travel, we decided to deal with it the following day. The next day, it became evident that either the resort had sold day passes to a cruise line or had hosted an event or themed party the previous day. The atmosphere had returned to a more subdued state almost overnight. We tried 5 restaurants during our stay: - Rum Factory: 3 out of 5 - Buffet: 2 out of 5 (Haitian-themed night and for breakfast on most mornings) - Mangoes (Mexican): 4 out of 5 - Jerk Hut: 5 out of 5 - 3 Palms (an additional $49 per person): 3 out of 5 The food here is mediocre at best. The buffet is typical fare, and the restaurants are pretty basic. As you’d expect for an entry to mid-level all-inclusive, the food is what you’d expect. We enjoyed the coffee shop, which offered more than coffee; it also offered quick bites such as sandwiches , baked goods, and ice cream every day until 9:30 p.m. On one day, we rented a cabana by the main pool, and Rhoan and Hernan were absolutely wonderful. They catered to our every need throughout the day with a smile on their faces. They were so attentive and they would go out of their way to help us with anything we asked. The facilities are mixed bag. Some parts of the hotel have held up well through the years, while others are just plain dingy. For example, the hallways are dark, outdated, and showing their age. The hotel has installed air fresheners in the hallways to make them smell better, and I would say they’re working for the most part. As for the rooms, they’re equally outdated and worn, but clean. The shower heads have low water pressure, but the AC works well. The main pool and the water park pool were well-kept and clean. However, the water park pool has been damaged and shows signs of being poorly patched up, cracks, mold, and missing pool tiles which have fallen over time. The service at this property is what truly sets it apart. We were very pleased with the friendly and hospitable staff. An extra special shoutout goes to the chefs and food service staff for being so mindful of food allergies. In our case, one of my sons has a severe tree nut/peanut allergy. On Jamaica buffet night, I spoke to the head chef, who walked me through each offering and its ingredients. This was a huge help! On Haitian buffet night, the chef wasn’t comfortable with what had been fried in the fryer throughout the day and went into the kitchen to prepare my son his own meal, which consisted of a chicken breast and rice. This was also very much appreciated. One evening, we ordered room service, which had a $10 charge for delivery, but it took over 45 minutes for a pizza and a drink. In summary, our initial encounter with Dreams Rose Hall was disappointing, and we will not be returning. While the service was excellent, we believe our family has outgrown all-inclusive resorts of this type and is seeking a more elevated experience with better facilities, food quality and options. Despite the service, the resort struggles to compete with the many other resorts in Jamaica in terms of value for money. I wouldn’t pay $400-500 a night for this property had I to do it again. In fact, when comparing the cost of Dreams Rose Hall for our family of 4 (2 rooms, inclusive of flights) to a non-inclusive resort like the SLS Baha Mar in the Bahamas, which offered a similar overall price, Dreams Rose Hall fell far short in terms quality of food, dining options, and overall facilities and property. We sincerely wish Hyatt the best of luck in their endeavor to transform this newly acquired property into a formidable competitor in the Jamaican market. Read less
