Our stay from June 26-July 5 included two garden view rooms on the first floor. -Check in went smoothly—after being dropped off and our suitcases unloaded by our airport transfer (we arranged separately as our reservation didn’t include transportation), we headed to the well appointed lobby and check-in desk. We had checked in using the app but still needed to pay for the rooms. The check in staff helped set us up on the app and set us up with WiFi. A concierge was assigned to us (to make reservations) and an employee walked with us to our rooms, transporting our suitcases. We were given yellow bands to wear all week to indicate which hotel we were staying in and key cards for our rooms. There is an elevator to the floors below as the lobby is on the upper floor. I will start by saying that we had an amazing vacation week at Iberostar Rose Hall Beach/Waves. I would recommend going and would consider returning if I didn’t have a bucket list of places to visit and limited time off and funds. Rooms—2 first floor garden view rooms. Pros—Comfortable king beds, stocked mini fridge (soda and beer) daily, porch area with table and chairs and pull out drying rack for towels and bathing suits. Handicapped accessible shower with built in seat. Cons-Somewhat dated decor. When checking under bed, found a cookie that was left there from previous guests that had been missed by the cleaners, so it seems like they did a nice surface clean but not a deep clean. Beach—trees offered extra shade but made the beach feel smaller, sand with some rocks on the shore. Lots of local vendors in kayaks selling their goods (just say “no thank you” and they leave you alone). Plenty of lounge chairs available. Water station on the beach. Ocean itself had a lot of seagrass growing on the bottom. Some clear sandy spots to swim in. Rocks and coral offered some great snorkeling—we brought our own masks and snorkels and saw a nice variety of fish. Wear water shoes because some of us cut our feet on the rocks. Overall not the prettiest beach on the island but we enjoyed swimming and snorkeling there. Took an excursion to Doctor’s Cave Beach and that was beautiful, clear blue water. Pools—we loved the main pool with all of the activities (foam party, water aerobics, dance lessons) and games. Towels required a towel card but they swapped out wet towels on request. We were up early so we claimed chairs with a palapa so we could get a little shade. The swim up pool bar was great!! The music is loud and the guests/entertainment staff can be too. We thought this added to the fun but if this isn’t your idea of fun, you won’t like it. You have to know what kind of vacation you want. We thoroughly enjoyed this part of it though. The entertainment staff and bartenders work really hard to keep everyone happy and engaged. Food—they have 5 restaurants at Waves and we tried them all. We are not “foodies” so we enjoyed the food at each restaurant and never left unsatisfied. The buffet is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. There’s enough variety that you can find something to eat even if you’re picky. They changed the theme of meals nightly (Asian, BBQ, Mexican, Jamaican, International). Also for lunch, there’s the beach bar that offers hotdogs, hamburgers, chicken burgers and fries and the Jerk chicken shack which offered delicious jerk chicken, patties, coco bread and rice/beans. The Hibachi restaurant required reservations which we secured easily with our concierge at check in. No complaints about the food at all. Bars—we had great experiences at each of the bars. The bartenders were friendly and efficient. Shout out to Omar, Eroll (?) and I really wish I could remember the others. We loved the popup bars (Bob Marley drink tutorial, mojito and 4th of July drink cart) that offered variety! The lobby bar had the best coffee drinks (lattes) on the property so we visited daily. Some of the guests are so rude—be kind and they will treat you kindly. We also tipped each time we ordered a drink. They work hard! Entertainment—We thought there was a lot of offerings throughout the week that kept us entertained. Shout out to the entertainment staff—Sparkles, Red Bull, V6 to name a few—they have endless energy. Props to the hotel for a fantastic 4th of July celebration with live music, huge beach party (combining all 3 properties) and fireworks. We loved it. We also enjoyed the silent disco, Michael Jackson experience, Jamaican dancing and beach parties at night. Cat sanctuary—this is a highlight of the resort that is not advertised. If you love cats, you have to visit this gem of a place hidden on a hill behind the tennis courts between Joia and Suites. There are limited hours to visit—open 10 am-3 pm but closed 12 pm-1 pm for lunch. The cats are so friendly and well taken care of. There are so many little built in nooks and crannies for the cats to hide in or climb on. We loved visiting them! We walked there but if you ask at the front desk, you can get a golf cart ride to the door. A couple of ways Iberostar Rose Hall Beach/waves can improve— 1-update the app so that it is up to date on the show/entertainment schedule. We had to rely on the entertainment team announcements during the day or see the announcement on the TV in the lobby so it was difficult to plan ahead. 2-maintenance—while the hotel and grounds are clean and maintained, there are little things around the resort that could use some upkeep—tiles breaking off in the pool, garbage picked up on the beach on a more consistent basis. 3-reduce the high pressure sales tactics of trying to get people to join the IHG points program. Our assigned concierge was just doing his job but we felt pressured to say yes and then guilty that he didn’t get his commission when he said no. We paid good money for this vacation and no one should feel guilty for not sacrificing time to listen to a presentation. Thankfully after saying a final no, no one bothered us about it the rest of the week. Overall, I would highly recommend this resort and wouldn’t hesitate to stay there again! Read less
