The past few days at the Iberostar Suites/Waves have been unlike anything I’ve ever experienced. When Hurricane Melissa hit the island, there was so much uncertainty — fear, worry, and concern for everyone’s safety. But through it all, the staff there have been absolutely incredible.
From the moment the storm warnings began, the team worked tirelessly to keep everyone calm, safe, and cared for. What has truly touched me most is that so many of them have their own families and homes to think about — some unable even to get back to them — yet they’ve continued to show up with kindness, warmth, and genuine compassion. There was never a hint of stress or complaint; only smiles, reassuring words, and an unshakable sense of calm.
I want to give a massive shout-out to Browning, KK, O’Brien, Akeem, (from Waves) and the Spanish sisters (or twins) frim who manage with such grace, the Chinese-Jamaican housekeeper and his friend Matthew from Selection, and the Jamaican manager with the locks tied in a ponytail (she’s usually in one of the coloured shirts with the flag on the arm from Waves I think) . Each one of them went above and beyond in ways that words can hardly capture — checking in on guests, making sure everyone had what they needed, and somehow keeping spirits high even when the power flickered and the winds howled outside.
There’s a real sense of family here at Iberostar — not just between the staff themselves, but extended to the guests too. We were all looked after as if we were part of their own. In the middle of a hurricane, that kind of heart and humanity is something I’ll never forget.
To everyone who stayed and worked through those long, difficult days — thank you from the bottom of my heart. You’ve shown what true hospitality and courage look like. Iberostar should be so proud of you all.
