Round Hill Hotel & Villas

Montego Bay, Jamaica

The hotel

Undoubtedly one of the most sought after hotels in the Caribbean, Round Hill Hotel & Villas has been a long-standing Jamaican icon since its opening in 1953. A former pineapple estate on the outskirts of Montego Bay, what is it about Round Hill that makes it such a magnet? Round Hill is where Jacqueline and JFK spent their honeymoon, where Rodgers and Hammerstein wrote the Sound of Music, where Hitchcock got sunburned and where Noel Coward, if egged on enough, would sing for the guests. Today, this elegant beachfront resort offers the same blend of qualities that has always pulled the famous names and faces; namely a well-preserved slice of old Jamaica and tremendous hospitality. You still enjoy the estates' stylish architecture and a predictably colonial pace of life, but with the added pull of an oceanfront spa, an exceptional family program and refurbished hotel rooms designed for beach living by Ralph Lauren, (perhaps whilst visiting his own villa at Round Hill) as so much more. The ocean side restaurant perfectly blends the hotel’s historic pedigree with its new energy.

Round Hill is simply without peer in luxury travel. My husband and I stayed in a one bedroom suite for our honeymoon in June and we were absolutely blown away with Round Hill’s physical beauty, design, food, and most of all service. Our one bedroom suite by almost any other measure would have been considered a villa. We had more balconies than we could count, two full baths, an outdoor shower in its own grotto of sorts, a private and very secluded plunge pool, and the most romantic king size bed. Everything from the hard woods to the brass finishes was impeccably done. We spent most of our days bouncing from the beach to the pool to our own pool. Each was perfect. The first day on the beach we saw sea life (a skate, a couple crabs, some sea urchins, several different fish). I also really appreciated Round Hill’s commitment to protecting and growing the reef around it. Round Hill felt truly one with its environment in the most beautiful of ways. The food was consistently excellent. We always felt very connected to Round Hill’s Jamaican heritage. The seafood was as fresh as can be. The drinks were perfectly balanced - especially those with fresh ginger. We had plenty of options for both restaurant dining (menu changed daily) and in-room dining. But it is the service that puts Round Hill in a league of its own. We could not take more than a few steps without one of the incredibly warm staff offering to help us, bring us a towel or a drink, or simply a ride up the hill. We have stayed in some of the finest hotels in the world and Round Hill puts them to shame. Round Hill embodies everything a vacation should be. Connection with a magical place, warm and loving hospitality, elegance without excess. Round Hill is a timeless classic, a Caribbean treasure, a first in class destination that has stood the test of time. It is no surprise that dignitaries, celebrities, and royalty choose Round Hill over and over. We have just left and are already planning our return. Thank you, Round Hill, for the most magical honeymoon. Read less

We absolutely loved our stay at Round Hill! Villa 23 is the closest to the lobby and a little bit dated (decor) but the staff (especially Ms. Bevene, chef and Angie, housekeeper! We will be back! Keep in mind it is pricey but we felt well worth it!

I'm not sure how to prioritize our favorites in this review because there were so many highlights! For an entire week, we didn't have one bad moment. This was our first time at Round Hill and it exceeded every expectation. Round Hill is a retreat first and foremost. It is relaxed, tranquil, and extremely service-forward. The property is teeming with lush landscapes, fruit and nut trees, and beautiful flowers. So many beautiful birds! At night, the sounds of birds, frogs, and insects is overwhelming, but in the best way (no sound machine needed here). My husband and I had a room in the Pineapple House section which was very conveniently near everything and was incredibly clean and comfortable. Housekeeping staff works miracles, truly. Our room was great - very well appointed, with space to lounge. Real coffee (!), an ice water urn that was refilled twice a day, and plenty of space for all our things to be stored neatly away (including our dive gear). We had a balcony that made mornings absolutely magical, watching the coastline come to life. No tvs and the extremely personal service from staff really take you out of "real life" and let you disconnect from screens, work, and stressors. We found ourselves increasingly leaving our phones behind in the room. I haven't felt so present for so long since before cell phones. (FYI, there is a TV room near the library where people gathered to watch the playoffs.) The staff were incredible. They knew our names and we knew theirs, and we saw the same faces every day. Standouts for us were Henrique at cocktail bar, who went particularly above and beyond to let us try breadfruit - he literally went and got one for us and arranged for the chef to cook it in 2 different ways! Henrique is also just naturally funny and fun to talk to. Kemar the bartender (soon to be officially voted best bartender in Jamaica - go Kemar!) offered creative and unique cocktails and great conversation. Enoch at breakfast was the best face to see every morning. We'd chat through our plans with him and get his take. Joy at breakfast made a special coffee creamer just for us to take our already amazing coffee to the next level. David the pool lifeguard knew everything about the resident birds and could tell us exactly when the rain would start! And Wade at concierge gave fantastic recommendations and made sure everything we wanted to do was on the schedule. So grateful for Wade. We spent 2 days diving with the resort's watersports desk and Douglas our dive guide and Akeem our dive master were so great! We had an amazing time with them. We also decided last minute on our last day there to try waterskiing for the first time, and JJ was so patient and encouraging in teaching us - my husband ended up being a surprisingly good water skier! We took an excursion to Mayfield Falls (Wade's recommendation) and it will be a favorite memory for life - so worth it. Go there. I could go on and on. One thing I'll say is that if you want a raucous party and late nights, don't come here - this isn't that place. But if you need some time to unwind, feel cared for, unplug from stressors, and reconnect with yourself/spouse/family, this is absolutely, hands down, the best place on earth. We will definitely be back. Read less

This review is slightly mixed, not because this place had flaws in its service, but because of the environment and of the time period that it harkens back to. This may be something you are into, and may make some folks feel slightly uncomfortable. I personally want to say my stay was amazing. I was treated like a queen. The service was amazing, unlike anything I’ve ever experienced. I felt cared for in every way and came home feeling the peace and tranquility I’ve been needing. The extreme price tag of this place gives you just that, plus the beautiful surroundings of nature, private chefs/maids to tend to your needs in the villas… it was truly a Fine, Michelin star experience, complimentary British Tea time every afternoon, and complimentary snorkels and water sports gear to enjoy the ocean… however if you are uncomfortable with seeing a one sided demographic being served by another, even some of the uniforms are uncomfortable to see, making you feel part of a time period and treatment of a certain demographic that should be left in the past, then this is not the place for you. I also saw the same employees the entire weekend working more than 12 hour shifts… of course they may have gotten breaks, but I wouldn’t know. I think this place is special, and has impeccable service, but it’s leaning towards slightly cringy. We can do better than putting Jamaican female chefs and childcare providers in old school maid and nanny outfits. Not my cup of tea… perhaps they can be traded for legit chef uniforms and nice personal clothing. I enjoyed hearing classical music during tea time, it was very peaceful, however it wasn’t culturally Jamaican… that’s what I was missing from this place… but maybe that’s the goal. I woke up every morning at sunrise to go to the beach and often the workers were singing and listening to their music, but when they’d see me, they’d stop. I thought they being themselves added to the atmosphere… anyway. That’s my two sense. I wouldn’t change the impeccable service mindset of this place… it is what one wants on a true vacation, however I would rethink the tone… a colonial time period is something we should reconsider uplifting… Read less

Every inch of the property was beautiful and every staff member was so friendly. Had the best couples massage and coffee scrub at the spa. Played pickleball with my husband and the 2 twin staff members offered to play doubles with us which was another highlight of the trip. The main bar plays great piano and sax and I somehow got my husband to dance with me lol. Met some friends, also made friends with the staff. Beach and pool were spot on. The affogato at the beach hut is a MUST! Definitely hope to come back for our anniversary! Read less
