“A good resort with room for improvement”

Just returned from a one week stay at Sandals Negril, December 20 – 27. We were a party of six: my wife and I, our adult daughters and their fiancé/boyfriend. We all stayed in the Club level room category which overlooked the ocean. It is worth noting that aside from wifi issues (noted below) there was no aftereffect that we could see on the resort from the recent hurricane. We have stayed at numerous Sandals properties over the past 20 years, and there some definite Pros and a few frustrations from our visit. PROS The beach is amazing and as advertised. The resort is located in a bay so the water was very calm and the sand is totally soft and rock free. We walked up and down the beach everyday and was a highlight of our stay. There is the typical challenge with claiming chairs, I was out by 7:00 everyday but if you aren’t picky you would usually find something with shade. We found the food in all of the restaurants to be very high quality, particularly at dinner time. We were glad to have the Club level service for making dinner reservations since we were a party of six. There were lots of watersports available throughout the day, including a free one hour snorkeling trip that went out four times per day that we really enjoyed. The transfer to and from the airport was well organized. FRUSTRATIONS The biggest frustration was some inconsistency in the level of service. None on their own are deal breakers but did create some frustration during our stay. Some examples: Our room did not have robes provided, which we didn’t realize until our daughter mentioned hers. Three out of the six days we had to call to get our mini bar re-stocked, which they did promptly, but disappointing that we had to keep calling. Our room was serviced late in the afternoon several times when we wanted to be getting ready for dinner. The bed was never fully made up, but instead made for turndown, assuming to make the evening service quicker. The night we dined at the Bayside (which is the main restaurant which does not require a reservation), half way through the meal they started a movie, very loud, right beside us. There was gun fire, shouting, and incredibly loud music which was not exactly the setting we wanted for dinner. We never went back, but noticed other evenings where they had music or entertainment at very loud levels which strikes me as odd for the ambience you would expect from a dinner at Sandals. We are beach people so not an issue for us but the music and games were incredibly loud at the main pool all day long. If that is your vibe then great but if not then be warned. There is a second quieter pool but it had maybe 10 chairs. The wifi did not work in the rooms throughout our stay and only worked in certain spots in the main lobby area. We were told it was due to lines being down from the hurricane so not sure how the connectivity is in a normal week. Also, Although on the website it is a couples resort, there were numerous families with single adult children. It was not an issue for us in any way, but mention this in case you are thinking about this resort. Previously we were under the impression it was couples only, but clearly this is not the case. Overall we had an enjoyable stay at the resort. I am not sure it met all of the levels of service we would expect from a premium resort and would potentially shop around a little before returning to Sandals Negril.

After many trips to Sandals Negril over the last 20 years, we just returned from the most amazing visit ever! We traveled with 9 other couples to celebrate our 50th Wedding Anniversary and everything about the vacation and the celebration was wonderful! Sandals Negril has done an extraordinary job of recovering from Hurricane Melissa, which hit the island less than 2 months before our trip. The grounds, facilities, food, entertainment, and people are nothing short of EXQUISITE! When you visit Sandals Negril, you will be blown away by the friendly, personal, and professional staff, throughout the resort.
