“Check in nightmare”

We had always wanted to stay at the Hilton Hawaiian Village because it’s so well known so on our recent trip we finally did just that. I am military and qualify for the Hale Koa next door but opted for the Hilton. I am a Hilton lifetime diamond member and I’ve stayed in hotels over 3000 times, half of those in the Hilton family. There is no competition, the check-in process was the worst experience of my entire life at a hotel trying to check in. We arrived about 3:30 PM and there were at least 50 people in the line. I qualified for the priority lane and there were only three people in front of me so I felt good about that. It took 30 minutes to get checked in. I have never never seen it take so long for a hotel desk agent to check someone in. She typed, typed, typed, and typed, and finally I asked her what the situation was. We finally got the process finished and made it to the room. To their credit, they upgraded us to a nice suite on a high floor. The next day I was walking around the hotel at 4:00 PM and the registration area was a mob scene. I counted 87 people in the general check-in line. For the price you pay at that hotel, you shouldn’t have to stand there and wait that long for a ring. That alone is the reason I will never go back there. Hotel has over 3000 rooms and sits on 22 acres. There is about a dozen places to eat and probably three dozen or four dozen shops to go into. There are several pools there also. It reminded us of a Disney vibe. The pools were packed, the lines at the bar were out the door, and everything was crowded. By contrast, the Hale Koa was laid back, we went over each night for drinks and to watch some music and eat breakfast there one day. Everybody has their preferences about hotels, and I’m sure that to a lot of people out there who enjoy the vibe of hotel like the Hilton. For us, it was just too crowded. We do not regret staying there because it was in our bucket list. It was an expensive place to stay, but we decided we were not going to let things ruin our trip and we focused on enjoying the property. Just be aware that if you go, it is very crowded.

We booked two rooms for a week to celebrate two things: my husband's and my babymoon, and my niece finishing high school. This was her and my sister-in-law's first vacation ever, and the first time any of us had been to Hawaii. We were treating them. It was supposed to be special. It started with a two-hour wait at check-in. Brutal, but it was a Sunday, so we let it go. We were "upgraded" from Tapa to the Rainbow Tower, which felt like a win until we learned the tower has five elevators and two were completely out of service. For a full week. One eventually came back. Every trip in or out of that tower was a nightmare. Then came the worst 20 minutes of our lives. Right after check-in, my husband and I were booking a luau (you have to sit through a timeshare pitch just to make it affordable), while my sister-in-law and niece headed up to their room because they weren't feeling well. In that window, a very drunk man in his 40s went after my niece, who is a minor. When she rejected him, he started saying horrible things to her. Then he lunged at her. Terrified, she put up her fist to defend herself. HPD came, ruled it self-defense, and the man was removed from the property. But where was security? This was by the beach, the big pool, and an elevator lobby packed with guests — an area anyone off the street could walk into. Not one guard in sight. The concierge desk right by those elevators didn't even have a radio or phone to call security. How is that possible at a Hilton? And guess what: for the rest of our stay, there was a security guard posted at that exact spot. So you know it should have been there. My niece and sister-in-law spent the rest of the trip in shock. The hotel made a few half-hearted check-ins and that was it. No meal, no gesture, nothing for a teenager who had just been attacked on their property. One manager told me "it could have happened to anyone." That's not an answer. That's an excuse. To this day, the hotel has never formally acknowledged what happened to her. Even the timeshare staff were horrified when we told them. Needless to say, we won't be signing up for more Hilton properties. If this is how they treat families, DO NOT STAY HERE.

“Housekeepers get all the credit!”

We came here for vacation, and it’s been our best vacation experience ever as a family. The accommodations are top notch, and our housekeeper Yaohong N. has taken very good care of us and provided everything that we’ve needed throughout our stay. We look forward to returning!
