Optional service fees

Generally speaking, you'll find that many of the "extras" like meals and drinks are complimentary. Virgin Atlantic does charge extra for some optional services however, which are listed here.

Taking extra bags

If you'd like to bring more than your free bag allowance, or if you've bought an Economy Light ticket and decided you need a bag after all, you can add up to seven extra bags per person when you check in online.

Online check in opens 24 hours before your flight is due to depart and closes 70 minutes before.

You can also pay for extra bags at the airport. it costs exactly the same, but the limit is ten bags per person.

Extra baggage fees

Additional baggage charges are per flight and detailed in the table below. Please note that any excess baggage that you buy is non-refundable and non-transferable.

Additional baggage fees are based on the country where your journey begins, not the individual flight you are checking in for. If your journey begins in the UK, US, Canada or the Euro zone, the rates below apply. If your journey begins elsewhere, we'll convert the GBP rate into your local currency.

  • UK - Nigeria, India, and Ghana

  • UK/US/Canada - India

Checked sports bags that do not fall within your allowance will be liable for the applicable fees stated in the above table. 

Flying with infants?

  • The baggage allowance for lap infants (without their own seat) is 1 checked bag, except in Economy Light where no baggage is included.
  • A fully collapsible pushchair and car seat can be taken in addition to the free bag allowance.

If you're travelling with one of our partner airlines or your trip involves a transfer or connection from another airline, they may also charge an extra baggage fee if your checked in bags exceed their limit and you'll need to purchase your extra baggage at the airport.

To US destinations

NOTE: If you are travelling on a VS* codeshare flight connecting to or from the US (operated by one of our partner airlines) including those with an origin or destination in the US, then as the marketing carrier, Virgin Atlantic's baggage allowance applies, as above.

For any unusual sized baggage such as sporting equipment (skis, surfboards etc.) that is larger, longer or wider than a standard checked bag there may be operational and/or practical acceptance limitations to the transportation of such equipment. Please check with the operating airline concerning its baggage limitations as to  whether it is able to accept carriage of such items or not (see links below).

To all other destinations

If you're travelling in Economy Light, Economy Classic or Economy Delight, you can choose your seat for a fee at any time or a standard seat is assigned at check-in.

If you're travelling in Premium or Upper Class, then you can choose your seat for free at any time.

You may cancel your booking without penalty within 24 hours of making your reservation. Please call the Customer Service Centre to cancel your booking.

If you have a flexible or semi-flexible ticket you can change the date outside of this timeframe. Fees vary so you should contact your travel agent or our Customer Service Centre for specific information.

If you are due to travel within 7 days of making your booking, you may incur a date change fee.

Charges apply for upgrades, which vary in price per cabin and can fluctuate at any time, depending on market conditions.

We offer WiFi on every flight, so whether you want to send some emails, surf the socials or keep up to date with the news on the ground, you can stay connected to the wonderful worldwide web while you’re in the air. WiFi providers vary by aircraft type, which means the service and packages are a bit different depending on which plane you’re flying on. And it’s worth noting that because it’s delivered by satellites as we travel at 600 miles per hour, coverage and speed can be more variable than, say, your home broadband.
