Your moisturiser may need to sit down for this.

In Seoul, skincare isn’t just something you do before bed. It's a city-wide ritual, played out in neon-lit beauty stores, polished flagship boutiques, neighbourhood spas and steamy jjimjilbangs. Think self-care, just with better lighting and a lot more sheet masks.

Whether you're planning your first K-beauty haul, curious about Korean facials, or simply want a few days of cafés, concept stores and serious glow, here's how to experience the city with a little insider polish.

Where to shop for skincare in Seoul

For the bright-lights introduction, start in Myeongdong. Make Olive Young Myeongdong Town your first stop for a huge edit of Korean skincare, health and beauty under one roof. Then wander towards Myeongdong-gil and Myeongdong Cathedral, comparing sheet masks, SPF, cleansing balms, and whatever else starts calling your name from the shelves.

For a more polished afternoon, head to Sinsa and Garosu-gil, where flagship stores, fragrance counters and make-up studios feel more curated. Look out for brands such as Sulwhasoo, Jung Saem Mool, LOPS and Aesop, and leave time for coffee and a little people-watching between stops.

For Seoul’s sharper, more treatment-led side, Gangnam, Apgujeong and Cheongdam are the neighbourhoods to know. This is where beauty gets more precise, with skin analysis, facials, aesthetic clinics and glossy concept stores. Some appointments may need booking ahead, so plan your glow-up accordingly.

And for beauty with a design-school edge, spend time in Seongsu. Once an industrial neighbourhood, it is now packed with creative studios, cafés and warehouse-style stores. Less beauty counter, more cool-girl cabinet.

Worth knowing: don’t arrive with a rigid product checklist. Some of the best finds come from staff reccommendations, or asking what locals are buying for the season.

Beauty experiences in Seoul

Colour analysis

Ever wondered why one lipstick shade lifts your whole face, while another never quite makes it out of the make-up bag? Seoul has a session for that.

This is a beauty appointment with surprisingly practical powers. A consultant drapes different shades around your face to find the tones that flatter your skin, hair and eyes best, from your crispest neutrals to your best blusher shades.

Book early in your trip and you can take your new palette straight into Seoul’s beauty stores, boutiques and make-up studios. Many studios offer sessions in English, but appointments can go quickly, so plan ahead.

Good for: smarter shopping, fewer beauty wildcards and finally understanding your relationship with orange.

A Korean facial

After a long flight, your skin may be asking for a little attention. Seoul is a very good place to listen. Depending on where you go, you can find deep hydration, a calmer complexion, or that post-treatment gleam K-beauty does so well.

Treatments vary by clinic and spa, but many include cleansing, exfoliation, hydration, massage, masks and LED therapy or skin analysis. Some feel soft and soothing; others are more clinical and results-led.

For travellers, a hydrating or calming facial is often the easiest place to start, especially if your skin has been negotiating cabin air, jet lag and a new climate. Avoid booking anything too active if you have sensitive skin, a packed itinerary, or plans the next day where you’d rather your skin felt calm and camera-ready.

Good for: post-flight hydration, a slower afternoon and skin that needs a reset between busy days.

A scalp treatment

Face masks, serums, SPF. Lovely. Now, about your scalp.

In Seoul, scalp care is a beauty ritual in its own right, with hair-spa treatments offering a relaxing, lower-downtime way to feel polished without stepping into clinic territory. And it pairs neatly with a shopping day in Gangnam, Sinsa, or Hongdae.

A typical session may include scalp analysis, deep cleansing, massage, steam or conditioning treatments. Some feel more like a head spa; others are closer to a targeted hair-and-scalp reset.

Good for: a beauty reset without little to no downtime.

A jjimjilbang visit

For a slower reset, spend a few hours at a jjimjilbang, a Korean bathhouse and sauna.  Think warm floors, steam rooms, quiet corners, cold baths, heated relaxation spaces and, if you are feeling brave, a full-body scrub that leaves no dry elbow behind.

The appeal isn’t glossy or high-tech - this is steamy, shoulder-dropping self-care. Go with time to spare.

Worth knowing: Read up on etiquette before you go, especially around washing before entering baths and what to wear in different areas.

Before you go

Seoul is generous with testers, samples, and very persuasive shelves, so it helps to know your skin type, your luggage allowance, and your personal limit for “just one more serum” before you arrive. Introduce new products slowly, especially if your skin is already dealing with a long flight, a new climate, and a heroic step count.

For treatments, choose reputable providers, check what’s included, and ask about downtime before booking. A facial, spa session, scalp treatment, or jjimjilbang visit can be more than enough to get a feel for Seoul’s beauty culture, without turning your holiday into homework.
