I love this hotel. The staff are friendly, the breakfast service is excellent, the rooms are clean and the guests always seem happy. I stay at the Thompson for work trips to DC whenever I can. Bryant hooked me up with a cab to make my meeting today on time. I recommend highly

I had a couple of stays in May 2025. This hotel has ups and downs; overall, I think there are way better options in DC, unless you are going to a baseball game. The upsides: the room and public areas are clean. If you are going to a Nationals game, or have business with the federal Department of Transportation or at the Navy Yard, the hotel's location, just a couple of blocks from the stadium and those federal offices, cannot be beat. Other aspects of the location are a mixed bag. On the plus side, it's an easy walk to the Navy Yard Metro stop, which gets you into the heart of DC quickly. You're close to the Anacostia River; there's a lovely walking path along the river. This part of DC has transformed substantially in recent years and is full of modern apartment buildings and now some restaurants, coffee shops, etc., though these include mostly chains. On the down side, this area of DC is a little soulless. If you're wanting that classic DC architecture (row houses, small streets, a sense of history, etc.), or to stumble into great local restaurants, this is not the place. At a hotel, the place has some major flaws, especially if you are traveling on business. Overall, it's sort of a party hotel--rooftop bar scene, trendy lobby, etc.--and thus not a quiet retreat or a business hotel. The biggest annoyance is that flashy design has beat functional design. For example, the room on my first stay had no desk at all--totally impractical for a business traveler. On the second stay, the room had a tiny desk (smaller than a school desk) that folded down from the wall. The closet (an armoire) is tiny; two people for a weekend has trouble fitting their clothes in it. On the armoire's interior, the safe blocks the space where a shirt or pants could cleanly hang. And the room was DARK. There are just barely any lights, and the ones that are there were either malfunctioning (the bedside light flashed every two seconds, creating a strobe light effect) or so dim as to barely matter. In my second room, there was a little couch in the corner. That seemed like a nice place to work or read until you realized it was placed in total darkness, with no overhead light or lamp nearby. Service was a mixed bag, too. The first stay, check-in was great. The second, it was horrible. I arrived to an employee (Mike) who, upon me saying I wanted to check-in, just said "ID and credit card." How about asking for my name or saying "welcome?" He then informed me I had checked-in online and didn't need keys. I had done no such thing. This led to a situation where I realized someone else has been checked-in under my name; the credit card he said was on-file for my room wasn't even my card. Not only is this ironic (why demand the ID first if you're not even going to look at it?), it also raises safety and fraud concerns. A long period of tying and squinting at his computer followed, and I was given a room different than the one shown on the app. When I asked him what happened, he was evasive, saying "my computer doesn't give me much information." No apology for the error or long transaction was offered, and zero eye contact was made throughout the entire check-in process. On our first stay, we left the room around 9a and came back after 3p to relax before an event. Our room hasn't been cleaned. We then asked the desk if it could be soon so we could get ready for said event. That request was met with an affirmative "right away!". We returned nearly 90 minutes later to the housekeeper in the room and had to wait in the hallway while she finished. Let's just say the service was not five-star stuff. Overall, unless you're in DC for a specific purpose in the neighborhood, you have lots of better options. Read less
