We enjoyed so much our stay last year that we ended up repeating it this year. We researched other options, such as Hawaii, Caribbean islands, Pacific Islands, Philippines, Australia, etc. The characteristics that weighed higher in our assessment were seclusion/isolation from major centres, fewest humans/guests, clear and warm waters, local beauty, and relevant inclusions (such as hire of kayaks, boards, etc). Other characteristics were either common or typical (such as good food, room movies, internet access), or of minor relevance, so they would not influence considerably the decision. Indeed, knowing the island from last year's trip made it harder for all other contenders, but we did not feel any compelling reason to try out something else. It seems that the Maldives culture is such that prompt e-mail replies is unlikely. This year, again, exchanging e-mails with Velavaru was frustratingly slow, despite writing during their working hours, and our complaint last year. And again, they were not the only ones, other resorts in the Maldives took a few days to reply to a simple message. I still have some hope for improvement for next year. Unsurprisingly, the beauty and clear waters that we loved so much remained the same this year. The weather was a bit different, it was a lot cooler than last year. There were afternoons that we skipped getting into the swimming pool because it was a bit "colder". Last year, many days we could not swim a few laps because it was too hot. There were also nights that were "pleasant" (not too hot and not too humid), last year most nights felt as hot as during the day, hot and humid. We also noticed rarer sightings of baby sharks around the island, and more rubbish on the shore during the day. The resort maintenance team does a great job in cleaning the island, but it cannot prevent floating rubbish from landing on shore. This is not a "complaint about the resort", it is actually an observation that may be witnessed anywhere, as a direct consequence of surrounding and nearby human systems. To our delight, our stay coincided with most staff members leave schedules, so we could meet again most of the same lovely people that made this resort special. And once again, each and everyone, in their own way, everyone made our stay memorable and special. In summary, our choice this year was justifiable and it proved to be rewarding. It is becoming harder to consider other themes (mountains, bush, snow), and destinations. But we are fine with that. Read less

If you're considering staying at Angsana Velavaru, please think twice — especially if you're booking any of the beach villas. Despite the resort's 5-star branding, the condition of the rooms and overall service is far from what you’d expect from a luxury resort in the Maldives. 1. Room Issues: We were first assigned a Beachfront Villa, which had several serious maintenance issues: - Doors and bedside light were broken or misaligned - Toilet flushing did not work properly - Shower head barely functioned We reported these problems and spoke directly with a manager. The room was changed — but unfortunately, the second room had issues as well: - Broken toilet seat that pinches the skin when you sit - One of ceiling light not working (only fixed after we requested it) - Bathroom and shower door doesn’t close properly - Some of electrical outlets not functioning These are basic, unacceptable flaws — even more so in what was supposed to be an upgraded room. We took a few videos, but somehow not able to upload. 2. Check-in Process – Chaotic and Unpleasant: Before arriving at Angsana Velavaru, we stayed at three other resorts in the Maldives, and never once had such a poor experience (Even in cheaper resort). The problems started immediately after stepping off the seaplane: We were left waiting for over 40 minutes behind another resort, surrounded by construction debris and zero hospitality. When the speedboat finally arrived, they blasted extremely loud hip-hop/club music during the entire ride — a jarring and unpleasant welcome. Upon arrival at the resort jetty, there was no welcoming process like other Maldives resorts usually do. When we raised these issues with the greeting staff, she was completely indifferent and made no effort to explain or apologize. 3. Summary: The most shocking part? This was all on our very first day, and we’re expected to stay here for seven nights. We truly regret choosing this resort for our honeymoon. We are sharing this to prevent others from making the same mistake. Angsana Velavaru has been nothing short of a disappointment, and it does not live up to the 5-star experience it promises. This is a long one!! We spent 1 week here in June and had a wonderful time and fabulous sunny weather for the whole week. This was our 8th Maldives island to visit. We arrived in Male at 5am ish. Got through security relatively quickly and proceed to the arrivals hall where we were met by an Angasana rep who assisted us through the seaplane check in and then on to the business lounge in the seaplane terminal. The lounge is relatively quiet with nice comfy seats access to a balcony and what looked like some tasty snacks. We just had time for a quick coffee and change of clothes before proceeding to the seaplane area. We arrived at the island after a 45 minute flight, the seaplane was going on to other islands after our drop off. We disembarked in a pontoon and were whisked to the island in a speedboat. We were met by staff and brought reception where we were quickly checked in and taken to our room. We were so grateful for this as it was only 9.30am! We were delighted with the room we got which was an upgrade on our booked room. We were upgraded to a deluxe beach pool villa. Thank you so much Angsana staff. We were absolutely thrilled. We thoroughly enjoyed this room. We stayed in an all inclusive basis and this was absolutely perfect for us. We used the pool at the back everyday, several times. We had a lovely beach view by our room and shaded sunloungers at the front. If I was to be critical I would say the rooms need some slight modernising eg putting USB/C ports at the bedside, making the door lock electronic instead of key. More access to plugs but these things did by no way bother us. Just a reflection. We settled in to the island very quickly and found our way around. The island was perfect for us in this respect as we wanted a traditional no shoes island that you could walk the full way around and sandy paths and this island rocked those boxes perfectly. We were spoiled by the wonderful staff we met and surprisingly many were working there >10 years which says a lot. We were fortunate to chat to new manager Jan who was always available and wanting to help. We visited the water villa bar and restaurant for drinks and really enjoyed the vibe there and spotting turtles and sting rays as we sat there. But I must say we never at any point regretted not booking a water villa. My husband took the daily snorkelling tour most days and I did it 3 times and each we saw an abundance of colourful corals and sealife. It was organised so well by Ajeel in the dive centre. Who makes everyone feel so safe. He’s wonderful. When we were not snorkelling we enjoyed relaxing by the pool or walking around the island. The food was beautiful here we never had a bad meal and loved having the option of al a carte dining and the buffet. This is no ordinary buffet there was always chefs such as Mamun are on hand cooking fresh food and topping up the beautiful dishes. In this Kaani restaurant we were so well looked after by Ijmal and Leila who greeted us so brightly and tried to make things extra special. Try the biryani on the Indian al a carte menu- it’s divine. We enjoyed watching the sunset form Funa restaurant, we didn’t take the opportunity to eat there but enjoyed some great margaritas made by Shehan. There is a happy hour there in the afternoon. We enjoyed the drinks sitting outside the bar and were greeted warmly on very occasion by Adash and Sudeesh. A wonderful selection of beers, wines and cocktails on our package. Our very last night was made extra special Ajmal the bar supervisor who went above and beyond. We are very grateful. This gentleman works incredibly hard, as do all the staff on this wonderful island. We hope to return very soon. We haven’t returned to a Maldivian island before but this one fits the bill for us Read less
