My family and I, have just enjoyed 14 days at the Barcelo Coconut Island resort. The resort is located on Coconut Island that is connected to the mainland via a free of charge hourly ferry. We enjoyed a garden view pool villa with two full bedrooms, two bathrooms and a living room. The Villa was truly outstanding, decorated with a lot of taste and with a large fridge that turned out to be very useful. We had the all inclusive package that has almost no limitations regarding what is offered in all 3 restaurants that were servicing the resort (apart from high end alcohol and a couple of dishes in the menu, that we never had an urged to try based on the huge selection that was offered. There is also a gym and a Spa with super dedicated personnel. I thought the pool was huge for the Villa, it’s not a little jacuzzi type pool but a real private pool large enough to do your morning swimming routine. The staff was super attentive and well trained, regularly checking on your every need. Special thanks to Kim and Esther who was the supervisor being really involved in the day to day operation. Really, the whole staff was outstanding. I would recommend being proactive and make reservations at the Italian restaurant since it gets crowded, but there are plenty of options to choose from. Enric greeted us on our arrival and you get the felling really quickly that he knows what is going on from any minor Villa issue to the number of kayaks available at the beach, which I’m sure is not his responsibility but is the way for you to have the peace of mind that you are here to enjoy your vacation and not to stress about little things that they are usually solved before you even realize. We booked 2 scuba diving trips that were organized through the resort with the Sea Bees (great place) and was an amazing experience, we actually booked the second one because the first one went so well. The only thing that I think could improve is in the Internet department. It is unreliable at times and everything works so well in the resort that you expect the Wi-Fi to be outstanding… and it is not. A part from that, I would definitely consider coming back. It’s a place to truly disconnect and recharge your batteries. Read less

The pool and bar area is great - there are loads of friendly staff, the service is great and it never feels too crowded. The slides and pool area are great for the kids (the "fast slide" could do with being a bit faster though - the kids kept stopping on that one) and my 8 year old daughter really enjoyed the kids club every day. There is a wide variety of food and drink available - the cocktails are great. The rooms are a good size and the air con is excellent. And because it's an island, and the only resort on it, it feels very safe. My only complaint is the house/dance music which is on in each bar/restaurant almost constantly so you're having to shout to the people on your table to have a conversation. It's like they're trying to be a bar in Ibiza but the average guests are mid 40s with young kids. Please turn the music down, or at least just put it on in 1 restaurant so your guests can have a drink while enjoying the peace and quiet of this idyllic island! Read less

If you arrive at the newly acquired Barcelo Coconut Island (the first Thai acquisition by the famous Spanish company) expecting a 5 star experience and you're lucky enough to arrive at the Barcelo pier, you'll feel pretty special whizzing over the open sea, the palm trees coming into view and the sparkling lights of the hotel getting ever clearer. As arrivals go, it's hard to beat. If, however, you arrive at low tide, prepare for an altogether more authentic Thai experience that isn't ever 2 star. Be lucky! Moving onto the hotel... the staff are a mixed bunch. Some have clearly been well trained and appreciate what excellent service looks like. They are attentive, charming, check back regularly and generally get it right. Con, who works the cocktail bar with the pool table, was stunning. A big-hearted, beaming Phillipino, she made everyone feel welcome and we will miss her dearly. Unfortunately, the tale of Barcelo continues. You'll either get the 5 star experience, or 3 star depending on who greets you, how busy they are and if they can be bothered. One afternoon another guest and I waited 40 minutes to see if trash from around the pool, empty glasses, plates, uneaten food etc would be cleared before the local dogs chowed down. When staff kept turning a blind eye and an empty tray to the mess, returning to the bar empty-handed, Jason and I started clearing for them and leaving the cleared items on the bar. Staff said sorry, but continued to ignore the rubbish. A later bike ride around the local area where we witnessed staff fly-tipping nearby explained their regard for rubbish. If you want to remain ignorant of the truth of this island, don't venture out or you may be shocked. Our grand villa (located between two empty villas with pools as green as Grotbags) was a good size with a beautiful pool and view but sleeping at night was impossible as the combination of a full moon and two adjacent ponds/pools full with frogs meant we were treated to a chorus of ribbits for several hours. I love nature and appreciate the locals, but not in their thousands. Then as you head back to the hotel, you're greeted by more empty building sites, toilets left outside (despite complaints the loo was not moved from the doorway...), loose boards around social areas, exposed screws by the pool, awnings full of holes that gush water during heavy downpours, bikes loaned with buckeled wheels... the list goes on but so does this review so I'll stop there. We were downgraded to a worse villa after complaining, and i had to push back because they wouldn't agree it was worse until I showed them photos and the square footage so finally we were moved to a villa at the end of Ghost Town Road, thanks to Enrick, which was appreciated, but even this was fun! After a downpour, the electrics tripped and the ground floor sprung a serious leak creating a water feature when we stepped on floorboards. Eight hours after recording the complaint, staff visited at my insistence because I'm not sure they believed me. Credit to Enrick who quickly arranged for a significant upgrade and move to a beach front villa that was appreciated, along with the gratis pairs massage. All in, a good holiday, but not quite the 5 star experience we'd hoped for. As I write this, I am still trying to leave... I am at the mainland but the ferry hasn't yet returned with our luggage... ah well. I guess you just get used to the bizarre approach to customer service which is very mixed. Read less

Enjoy the picturesque view with a fresh coconut or coconut frappe. Professional therapeutic massage packages. I got the lymphatic massage by Ning which helped a great deal with sinus congestion. Highly recommend it. Thai Boxing instructor, Amnon, is phenomenal. Effective & patient teacher. Remember tip this wonderful staff! Bring a “bug bite thing” to extract mosquito saliva. It will reduce, if not eliminate itching. Read less
