The hotel

With a stunning sunset location, flanked by UNESCO World Heritage Site Le Morne Peak, this LUX* resort also overlooks an endless stretch of golden beach. Sheltered from trade winds and on the quiet side of the island, it’s an ideal place to catch up on some R&R. Landscaped gardens surround you, dotted with five swimming pools — select your favourite and pull up a lounger. Romantic in feel, the hotel is also ideal for families, with a superb kids' club offering activities such as treasure hunts, art classes and tennis lessons. Water sports abound, try your hand at snorkelling, water-skiing or kite-surfing perhaps. If you prefer dry land, no worries — team up with friends for a game of volleyball or hire a bike to explore the lush interior. Come sundown, the pace picks up slightly. Head to The Bar for cocktails and live music, or while away the hours in East, feasting on delicious Thai cuisine. Set right beside the ocean, The Beach is also highly recommended, serving up Italian fare in a relaxed setting.

We had a week’s all-inclusive package and did not know what to expect as we’ve never stayed at the LUX* before. On arrival, the bell staff gave a warm welcome, a very good first impression. As we stepped into the lobby, the stunning view of the sea, framed by pillars, hit us. Wow! The iconic Le Morne peak was a beautiful backdrop. The coconut palm fringed beach was a delightful place to relax. We snorkelled in the swim zone off the beach. Although there was very little live coral, we enjoyed watching fish especially a few small Picasso trigger fish. We have seen these at other places before but not in such numbers. We also love stand up paddle boarding and used boards from the Boathouse (water sports centre). The Boathouse did daily snorkelling trips, at 11 am and 3 pm. The sea was flat calm and the wind offshore. On windy days the current in the swim zone could be strong. The Boathouse posted daily information such as tide times, wind speed and direction. One day there was a severe weather warning and all water activities were cancelled for safety reasons. We have used water sports centres at other resorts and the LUX* Boathouse was by far the best, as the equipment was in good order and safety on the water was high priority. We went windsurfing at ION Club located by a safe lagoon on the east side of Le Morne. The centre also does kitesurfing, wing foiling and provides customers a shuttle service. We had dinner at The Kitchen where the food was delicious. We were interested in Mauritian cuisine and the dishes at the evening buffet did not disappoint. Lastly I would like to mention some staff who made our stay enjoyable. Sandra, the ever smiling chef for her delicious ice cream. Executive chef Saudhu for sending me Mauritian Lamb Salmie recipe which I have successfully prepared. The two ladies at the Indian live cooking station in The Kitchen for their delicious ti puri, dried shrimp rougaille, chayote fricassee, taro leaf fricassee, dhals and curries. Mr Balee, of The Bar, who knew our favourite pre-dinner drink. Mr Hossen, of the bell desk, who chatted with us daily. Mr Medwick of the amazing Boathouse for his excellent service. Chloe and Manish at The Kitchen for their tireless smiling service. Jessen of the front desk, who sorted a couple of issues with the room. Thank you all for the excellent service, for it made our stay at the LUX* Le Morne most enjoyable and unforgettable. Read less

Lovely hotel, really one of those luxury tropical hotels you have seen in magazines since the 90's. Wonderful beach, with established trees, fantastic view of mountain behind. Small resort, with 2 main pools, both have bars and amazing views. One pool is slightly warmed up to around 27 degrees, but not both as we were told by travel agent. Buffet is wonderful, I found fresh fish cooked in thick chunks. All sorts of other food Asian, local mauritius curries, European. Vegan, vegetarian, but not diabetic. Once again missing a group of food for people who need to avoid items for medical reasons. The restaurants on site are really expensive. We were on half board and had a meal in The Beach. For 2 people, on simple food, 1 x beer, 1 x glass wine, it was a total of over £150. We only had to pay for drinks, as HB. This is one place that it is worth going Fully Inclusive. The hotel rooms are not totally quiet as they have the main road behind, but you can only hear this in the bathroom. Outside you can hear a few helicopters flying over all the time as they take people out to see the undersea waterfall. Beach is fantastic. Lots of beach chairs, but we are here in winter but hotel is full, in fact it can be hard to get in. Really nice staff. Only thing we did not like is the balcony set up, as you have shared entrance at the front to some, and its easy to lock yourself out, take a key. Read less

It was excellent, I like this hotel. I would come back. Cleanliness needs improvement, but the team was trying very hard to deliver the best service, specifically, Justin from the concierge team and Chef Saurabh.
