The hotel

‘The Del’ as the Coronado is known as has been open for business since 1888 and is a designated National Historic Landmark! Indeed, it’s been the backdrop to many a Hollywood movie, including Some Like it Hot starring Marilyn Monroe. The last of California’s stately old seaside hotels, it is a monument to Victorian grandeur with virtually no two rooms alike and a sumptuous wood panelled lobby that has to be seen to be believed. Recent additions include Shore House at The Del, an elevated hotel experience in an extraordinary neighborhood of seaside villas. From an oceanfront pool that blends seamlessly into the horizon, to an inviting living room that flows effortlessly outdoors, Shore House offers an extraordinary sense of place, where family and friends form deep connections in a rare beachside setting. The Del's newest restaurant inside the beautifully restored Laundry building. Dine outside on the lawn and watch the action at the BBQ Pit or gather inside the historic brick building beneath vaulted ceilings and the Laundry's original conveyor system. Pull up a stool at the historic wooden bar from the 1880s for inventive cocktails, beer and wine.

I meant to post this earlier. I love this hotel and my family has owned a home across the street for the past 12-14 years. We frequently go over to the hotel for dining or to hit some of the shops. Since we had a family Christmas with relatives planned and I wanted to bring my two, small French Bulldogs with us to Coronado this time, I booked to stay at the Hotel Del Coronado for the week of Christmas, thinking it would be give everyone at the house more room. I imagined that it would be wonderful with the decorations and a holiday dinner in the grand ballroom on Christmas Eve. The trip was a disaster. As anyone who has stayed at the hotel or has checked it out knows, it is pricy. We even booked an igloo on the beach for one evening - the ONLY good thing about the stay!! The hotel was MORE THAN OVERCROWDED. There were people milling around looking at the decorations and hanging out. As people poured in from all directions, there was so much congestion on the walkways that there were people traffic jams in every direction. They even let people not staying at the hotel to plant themselves on the lawn with strollers and coolers. Not trying to be a Scrooge, but the walkways were many times down to one lane due to construction and they were FILLED with people. Our pricy, relaxing holiday was anything but relaxing. Somehow the lock flipped on our door when the door slammed the first night and our Frenchies were locked inside the room. We had to call security and they kept saying ,"It is locked from the inside and we can't enter without permission." LOL. I was like, there are literally two dogs in there, that's it. Finally, we convinced them to get into the room from the patio. Then one of the security guard said, "Well, where did the little one just go?" The dogs were already freaked from all of the banging they were doing on the door and one bolted when he opened it. Took me 10 minutes to find her and get her back in the room. The hotel was still under construction, which again, I realized at the time was a BIG, ongoing project. However, the hotel could have easily stopped construction for the week of Christmas. Instead there was hammering/pounding, grinding, and other construction noises and mess going on that week including early morning. Insane! I will never stay there during a holiday again. This stay was definitely NOT worth the money I paid. Read less

The ocean views from our 2 small balconies were lovely. At booking, I had requested a microwave for our bar area. It was in the room when we arrived. I greatly appreciated the wonderful customer service. I was a bit surprised at how large the entire resort is, with 4 different hotels. The resort has a lot of guests. High energy. I enjoyed the Views but would like to check out the historic Victorian building, Beach House or Shore House on a future visit. You can walk to the ferry, 1.5 miles, in about 30 minutes. Ferry ride to the USS Midway is about 10-15 minutes. Read less
Image of the Tripadvisor rating A Beautiful Disappointment: Not the Family Resort We Hoped For

I recently stayed at the Hotel del Coronado with my family, hoping for a special, relaxing getaway — but left wishing we had chosen literally any other Hilton property. Yes, the hotel itself and the grounds are beautiful, and the staff I spoke with face-to-face were kind and helpful. But that’s where the positives end. This is not a family-friendly resort in any sense. Want to make s’mores? That’s $300 for an hour. Want to sit on the beach? That’s $50 per person — and extra if you’d like chairs and umbrellas. Want breakfast that doesn’t cost $300 for French toast for the kids? Be prepared to stand in line for over an hour, because there’s only one affordable spot on property. There’s no room service. Even bottled water will set you back $11 — for a basic Dasani. Parking? Another $59 a night. Want some exclusivity? Forget it. This is one of San Diego’s busiest tourist attractions in summer, and the general public walks through the grounds freely. There are signs, but nothing is enforced — so you’re paying luxury prices to share the pool, shops, and restaurants with the crowds off the street. We stayed in a newly renovated room in the Victorian building — which was nice — but our “limited view” consisted of seagull droppings and loud trucks at 6 AM. There was also construction two doors down, so instead of peaceful mornings we had loud saws and hammering. When I reached out to the hotel’s text bot about it, I basically got told, “Well, you chose the room.” I wasted two free nights I earned through Hilton on this stay and regret every second. There are no meaningful Hilton member perks here — just the privilege of paying $1,000 a night to feel nickeled and dimed at every corner. If you’re a family looking for a true resort experience with inclusive amenities, a sense of calm, and a place that values your loyalty — look elsewhere. Read less
Image of the Tripadvisor rating Awful, overpriced, avoid

* Everything vastly overpriced. Food/drink mediocre. * Even most expensive rooms are small and poorly furnished. Everything is bland. * Ocean Club / Beach club not worth it. * Ocean a health risk from Tijuana sewage * Walls are thin, we kept getting woken up from noises in hall / adjoining rooms.
