The hotel
Located on the grounds where Hawaii’s most famous king once ruled, this is a stunning hotel, contemporary in feel with top notch amenities. Overlooking one of the best snorkelling bays in Hawaii, it’s a must for water sports fans as well as those who simply enjoy a beautiful beach to lie on. Shops, restaurants and bars are all within walking distance but there’s plenty to keep you entertained on-site. During high season, the Island Breeze Lu’au is one of the Big Island’s most popular events. As well as a sumptuous Hawaiian buffet to feast on, with dishes cooked in a traditional underground oven, dramatic Hawaiian and Polynesian entertainment ensures an unforgettable evening for all. Before the feasting and dancing even begins, outrigger canoes carrying the royal court glide past the ancient Hawaiian temple on the seaward border of the hotel, an incredible spectacle you’ll want to capture on camera! Honu’s Restaurant is also a treat, overlooking the beachfront and complete with firepits so you can linger long after the sun has set. For more casual fare, Billfish Bar serves dishes such as calamari ‘fritte’ and seafood cobb salad as well as signature cocktails. To work off all that delicious food, there’s a recently opened tennis centre with two championship hard courts as well as hiking and biking through glorious state parks.

**Rarely have I felt less welcome and less comfortable in a hotel!**
Already at check-in, you had the feeling you were disturbing; the lady at reception seemed annoyed.
The rooms are cleaned only every two days-without informing the guest beforehand. Reception only explained this, after we asked politely, on the evening of the second day, when we were surprised to find our room hadn’t been cleaned. But even on the days mentioned for our specific room, housekeeping knew nothing and only cleaned the rooms of guests who were checking out.
The breakfast buffet is neither particularly varied nor abundant, but in our case, it was included in the price. Today, on Mother’s Day, a brunch was held in the already too small breakfast room (wait times sometimes over 20 minutes; travel groups even had to adjust their schedules), for which guests had to pay extra. All guests with the regular included breakfast had to move to an unattractive side room, where only a very limited selection of food was available. You felt like a second-class guest, even though this did not match the service paid for.
There are restaurants nearby, but the hotel itself does not have one. The coffee bars in the hotel are rarely open.
Unfortunately, I cannot recommend this hotel.

This place sucks, save your money and go elsewhere

Everything that sucks here:
1. You call the front desk and tell them you have gold elite status and ask for an early check in which is more than ok; they DAF. We waited for 5 hours. And when we moved from where we were sitting, they say oh sorry your room was ready but we didn’t see you so did not tell you. ARE YOU KIDDING ME?

2. We were eating at their pool side restaurant and we were drinking from a pineapple. Just a blended pineapple. They made us leave. WE WERE EATING AND PAYING AT YOUR RESTAURANT, WE COULD HAVE FINISHED OUR MEAL INSTEAD OF RUSHING US OUT.
3. The hotel rooms are supposed to be ocean facing, when you go to the balcony you can see a small sliver of ocean and that’s about it.
4. I have stayed at enough hotel rooms to know about good coffee, but their machines literally had sand in their coffee machines.
I am writing all these in day 2 of our 8 day trip. Do I regret this? Yes! Is it my birthday when I am writing this, ALSO YES. SO THANKS SO MUCH FOR ALL THIS!

Lousy Hotel

I hated this place! It's old. The guest rooms are not maintained. They're not even clean. There's no cleaning of the rooms anyway. They blame COVID, which was 5 years ago and not a valid excuse for sloppy work anyway. Then they tried to say they don't clean the rooms because "everyone was deported."
Come on! They're just sloppy and totally not…

I HATED this place! First, it’s old and hasn’t been updated since I can’t say when.
Secondly, the room wasn’t really clean when we got there. I scrubbed gunk out of the bathroom sink.
Thirdly, they NEVER cleaned our room during a 5 night stay. They used COVID as an excuse.
When the COVID story didn’t convince me, the desk clerk said it was…

I didn’t buy that story either, but I decided not to make a scene. I will just never go back there, and I will never recommend the place to anyone.

Not all ocean front rooms are ocean front
Apr 12, 2025sredheada45Garnett, Kansas
I paid for an ocean front room. I was put in the east tower on the second floor. It was not ocean front. I complained until they put me in a ocean front room in the west tower. The best thing about this hotel was the breakfast buffet. If you want a chair at the pool or the beach you better get there early.
